absolutely no offense intended what-so-ever. It seems rather odd to me that a woman could put the concept of modesty together with feeling like a queen, because to me that is opposite in concept. If women are happy covering their heads in submission and modesty then I support you. One thing that stood out to me about what Andrea said that I LOVED was how do we like being defined. For me it is being called my daughter's mother, and one who tries to do good toward others I meet and being called religious as well. That is something we all can share.

No offense taken, the concept of modesty and of feeling like a Queen are not as opposite if you get the concept. Modesty is humbleness and the opposite of conceited. Queens (at least my perception) are powerful yet patient, beautiful yet preserved and confident. I'm using the word "Queen" as is defined when we Muslim women wear hijab. We are the daughters of Islam and of our families. It is impossible to explain if you haven't experienced this for yourself :) I only started to wear hijab (cover) this year at 35 yrs old. People rush to open doors for you, apologize if they curse in front of you and even greet you wishing you peace from God when they don't even know you, you can't help but feel like a Queen. I am my mothers daughter yes, but I belong to God first.

Women cover their "private" parts, mens are in places that are already discreet. You never know what a man "has" in general because their parts are not on display. Women's parts should also be covered and not treated in direct contrast to men (that is inequality- why must we show and they keep it hidden?). When looking at the general public, men are dressed for the occasion and comfortable while women are advertising and uncomfortable even if not conscience of it (why women have so many body/self esteem issues). We can sometimes tell a females bra and underwear size just because its all out there. Men must also dress modest and follow their etiquette of hijab. No one can argue that hair is beautiful and attractive, this is why we rarely see models/actress/singers with short hair, why every commercial or ad has hair flinging and why the beauty/hair care business is so massive. Covering what is irrelevant (beauty/private parts) forces people to treat and get to know each other for who they are and not what they look like. Just look at society and how seeking the approval of others by mere looks is encouraged. Up until about the last few hundreds of years women of all religions covered their hair as being naked and fully exposed in public was associated with animals. When people think that women should only dress in a way that attracts men (hair and showing curves), when girls believe if they don't submit to secular culture that tells them to show it all while men sit and judge (to determine if your "worthy" of love/attention), that is indeed slavery and the ultimate subservience. Real men, understand a woman who is covered because hes looking for a person and not a doll. The majority of women who covered are married while the ones who show less are predominantly single. We submit only to our creator and not the creation whether they understand it or not.

I remember once when I was traveling in indonesia. I saw a woman dressed head to toe in this green hijab while her husband stood there next to her in shorts and a t-shirt. No other society or religion express such disparity through dress.

No other society expresses such disrespect through dress and culture. A woman by Islamic standard (not a culture based on the religion) can not be forced to wear hijab, not to mention there are many Christian women who choose to wear hijab. You can not come an educated conclusion on a religion by watching those following it, you must study the actual source (the Quran). Men and women are equal in value but we are not identical. Flowers are no better then trees and plants, they are equal with different purposes and value. Muslim women fight and defend the right to wear hijab despite what you may see in the media or from the outside looking in. Islam is more then a religion it is a way of life practiced all around the world it is not an Asian or Arab culture. There are Muslim Indonesians who do not wear hijab. Turkey is a Muslim country, so are many in Europe. Islam is the only religion that confronts society when its morale goes against what we believe. Slavery was legal, Jim Crow was a law society isn't always so great with setting standards or respecting humans. Islam may not be for you, (we live and practice as Jesus pbuh and his blessed mother - who wore hijab btw) but at least study the source, the Quran, before forming an opinion. Anything less would be uneducated and a prejudice.

Many Muslim majority countries do not imprison women for not covering. Only Saudi and Iran have any legal head covering statutes. Many women are forced to have sex violently and against their will. We don't outlaw sex until all women are free to consent. We don't refuse to wear pants because some women are forced to cover their lower body. If you actually ask those women, they would tell you they have bigger fish to fry than head coverings. Women all over the world are denied reproductive health services, education, sexual assault protection, and other equal rights. And there is no correlation to head covering. There are almost 2 billion Muslims. That means about 1 billion Muslim women. I dare say less than half even wear a head covering every time they leave the house. There are also many people who are religious and not religious who do wear head coverings all the time or at some occasions. I also have many male friends who cover their heads for religious and cultural reasons. The Muslim women I know don't want people's help to uncover their hair. They see it as a backhanded way to infantilize and control them. And they don't want to be told what it means to them.

Idk... I feel like it's easier to just wear your hair in a pony tail or something. I mean, you can be modest without styling your hair, just as certainly as you can be immodest without having a single hair on your head. Being modest is more about behavior and mannerism. In the US, so many Muslim women wear hijab because they want to draw attention, they want to stick out. I know because I have know girls who have told me as much. They said it makes them feel special and apart from others, in a good way. Although they do receive negative attention for it too. But here is my point, if I wanted to fly below the radar in an Islamic country I would cover my hair. If I wanted to fit in and not bring negative attention to myself in a country that will judge and stereotype me for not covering my hair (and potentially use that as an excuse to treat me like a prostitute or sexually assault me), then I would wear hijab. If I lived in a place where no one would degrade me for not covering my hair, I probably wouldn't cover my hair, unless I'm cleaning my house or working in a field and need protection from sun. I don't see a practical reason for covering hair unless: 1. Working in a field 2. Housework 3. Preventing yourself from being raped in a country that looks at uncovered women as whores, instead of in a tolerant, religious freedom sort of way. When I lived in Saudi Arabia I was afraid to go to a subway sandwich shop without an escort, just because guys have NO respect for women and will pounce on them if there isn't another man there. I personally don't see how this social climate is liberating. If anything it makes women uber dependent on men for protection. If you are attacked the burden of proof is on you as the woman to prove it was rape and not solicitation.... Kind of ridiculous... Don't even get me started on countries like Pakistan. A woman doesn't even have legal rights as a citizen in that country. They have to be represented in court by a male.

From what I understand, and I am in no way an expert on this, wearing a wig as a posed to a scarf came about because Jewish women would be living someplace where they were at risk of being attacked physically and verbally just for being Jewish. A wig still afforded them the modesty and keeping with tradition, but still blend in with the crowd enough for their own safety.

In theory you are right. If it is ok for Jewish women is should be ok for Muslim women. The difference is when a women wears the covering. For religious Torah Jews it is only after they are married for Muslims it is during the beginning of adolescence. I think many people find that coercive since the girl is so young and really doesn't understand the significance behind it. Also, people object to the extent of the coverings. For instance, many westerners find the Chador, burka and niqab dehumanizes a women because it covers too much. That is just my 2 cents.

I don't think of hair as a jewellery because hair is part of human body naturally. I don't want to offend you because you have been so nice about it, but Jesus himself told me to wear a covering other than my hair, and here we are talking about it with beautiful, beloved Jewish and Muslim ladies all around us. Praise God. There is more to that scripture than is easily seen when reading English. It says in Greek that long hair has been given "against" a covering one throws around the head. In other words, long hair has been given (by nature) " in comparison to" a covering. Because of the similarity of the appearance of long hair and a covering wrapped around the head, nature teaches us to wear a covering when you hold long hair and a veil against each other and compare them. Long hair is a woman's glory, and it is glorious for her to have it. In this way, nature, through highly esteemed long hair , teaches women that it is honorable and proper to wear a covering around the head, as Paul teaches they should wear a veil, especially when praying or preaching , teaching and prophesying in church. He also says that if a woman does not wear a veil, it is as shameful or embarrassing as if she had gone out with her head shaved. And when Paul says "We have no such custom," he is not referring to the headcovering, but to the following topic of contentions and arguments in the church. I hope this make sense for somebody.
