At about 2:34 Ottensamer quickly grabs a basset clarinet in A and plays the rest of the piece on that instrument in order to play some of the lower notes available on that instrument. That's the instrument that Mozart wrote his concerto for.

Andreas is using the German “Oehler”fingering system clarinet which has a brighter , clearer sound in the middle & upper register but not as warm as the Boehm system for the lower notes .

Baffles me how you come to play such an instrument as man, not very manly, transverse flute is even "worse" :)

I doubt Pahud cares much about some vague gender association concerning what is literally a pipe used to make sound, but even if he did... The fife has a long association with military regiments, so historically many boys would play the flute. Even in leisure men have long been known to play the flute. Consider Frederick the Great, king of Prussia--or Tamino, the hero of Mozart's "Magic Flute". More recently, there are many great male flutists such as Jean-Pierre Rampal and Herbie Mann. In the case of Emmanuel Pahud, wikipedia states that he started to learn the flute as a four year old child because he liked the sound. And with Pahud playing I think we can all appreciate the sound.

You just tell us two things : 1) You know nothing about the transverse flute for it was a military instrument in the classical area. 2) You know nothing about what it is to be a « manly man » because it is the prerogative of young boys to compare it in the locker room.
