It never ceases to amaze me, the couple of times that I've spoken with a countertenor after a performance and hear the very masculine speaking voice, one of them even quite deep, like a bass. Amazes me, because I've tried it, have no idea how the countertenors or altos (difference?) achieve such a beautiful sound. Any troglodyte who thinks it inappropriate for a guy, un-male, is a sad case living a vacuous half a life.

I think the best term is just to call it head voice. What tenors etc call head voice is actually a mixed voice. That's what I think anyway. As an Italian speaker I can't not think of the term "falsetto" as somewhat pejorative, meaning as it does "small and false".

yes every tenor or baritone can. but not all can do it nicely or have the range or the sound quality. a fellow down the street can yell a high A, that doesn't make him a tenor. the vocal mechanism is available to all human beings, sounding good or feeling comfortable requires work and potential.

@countertenors I agree that due to length and mass, one would presume a difference, however, both male and female have similar vocal cord structures. It would be like saying a Cello isn't a string because it can't play as high as a Violin. Both are string instruments but given the body size and resonating chambers one is higher and one is lower in pitch. They both have similar structures, just differences in mass and length of strings.

@countertenors Actually falsetto is used to reference that style (maybe it is a US thing, don't know). Training does make a difference to the overall quality of sound and production. We were talking about Jacek and Andreas who are very well trained. An untrained voice I think would sound (here we are using our ears only) very falsetto-like (using my terminology) on higher notes and such.

@countertenors I agree they can sing falsetto, or whatever you want to call it. I have analyzed women's voices too and especially when they go really high does it become more falsetto-like instead of a fully resonant tone. I'll have to read up on the electromyographic studies, sounds fascinating.

Well, dear eustazio, you won't believe it, but in Verdis Falstaff there are two phrases, that are compulsory to be sung IN FALSETTO (as the score wants it so): 1st act 1st scene (Falstaff) "Io son di sir John Falstaff" and 2nd act 1st scene (Ford) "Guai, se mi tocchi". So, at least if you sing these roles - you must be able to deliver a decent falsetto ;-) Best regards, A. von Uri, Switzerland

@countertenors True the term is old but what is fascinating is that for women who sing in that register the terms used are different. I believe the term head voice is used. Not very consistent terminology since both male and females have vocal cords that operate in a similar fashion. Only difference is the length of the vocal cord, size of the larynx,etc. Sorry falsetto is a trigger word for me and when I sing high I never call it falsetto.

There are many excellent baritones but very few truly great countertenors, I prefer him singing Falsetto.

@KARINADIVA That is the question actually! We have three at my school (including me). One is actually a sopranist, and he should never use his baritone because it sounds like someone ground up his vocal folds in a meat blender. The problem comes when one ONLY sings in a specific range, in our case, it's were it's most comfortable. I can use my baritone, but don't. My friends can not because they never have and because of that it will remain undeveloped.

@countertenors Well I know that David Daniels use to correct people in the past about the falsetto word, I guess he succumbed to using it to avoid discussion any more. 8-)

thats what makes us get to question: can every baritone or tenor sing in the countertenor vocal extension? what makes him a countertenor would be the studying or he was just born this way..

Baritones and basses with great vocal ranges can usually have an easier time developing a countertenor voice. Every voice has a falsetto and, contrary to the belief of many a pedagogue, female voices too have a falsetto. Obviously I'm not saying what Scholl, Jaorussky and others do is not impressive: they developed and mastered the art of singing with Falsetto appoggiato delivering the intended artistic feelings they are thinking of, that's years and daily hours of study and practice. But the falsetto mechanism is there in every human being having a physiologically normal larynx.

@MTondeleo any baritone or tenor or bass for that matter has the potential to be a counter tenor because they are using Falsetto to make the high sound. Just like training the baritone voice or Tenor voice requires technique and of course for the singer to have the range in falsetto to sing in that register some have soprano range up there but most have an alto to Mezzo-soprano range.

@countertenors I think I'll stick to spectral analyses of the voice or scientific explanations over subjective terminology used by vocal teachers/experts from the past who only had their ears to rely on. Not all hearing is a like. Foremost the quality of tone and the ability to hear it clearly amidst instruments is most important. Regardless of what one chooses to call it.

I think a male singer with a good natural tenor/baritone voice should use that... Can someone tell me what they are doing in order to sing as a falsetto or whatever you want to call it? Does it require a different technique? Is it more difficult?

@countertenors It I sang very breathy then I would say an unconnected head voice. There are scientific ways to identify these things.

@countertenors Well first I would not classify falsetto by what I hear. Because there is so much to personal interpretation based on what a person hears. To me falsetto is a sound that sounds very airy, very weak and doesn't support good overtone productions. You can sing falsetto in a lower tone and a higher tone. I have heard a guy do this once in his lower range. Now I can do a spectral analysis on either Scholl or Laszczkowski voice if you want. Just let me know which arias.

@countertenors It because those specialists don't use any logic to their arguments. The only way to really "see" how a person is singing is to look at the vocal cords with a scope while they are singing.

It isn't a woman singing. It is Andreas Scholl singing in his head voice.

Oh I'm aware , I'm a countertenor myself (nowhere near as good though!) It was sort of a snarky complement -- a good countertenor should sound like a young boy or a woman and not just sound like a man using their head voice. My comment was an offhanded way of saying "mission accomplished" as far as Scholl goes :)

@countertenors The other day I was at a karaoke bar and one of the fellows there made a grimace and said to me to NOT sing in falsetto. Kind of hurt my feelings as he had already had it in his mind that singing "high" was a bad thing for a guy. Falsetto is a trigger word for me. chris

So, basically, being a countertenor is a choice in most instances? I've always assumed you don't choose, your voice is your voice. I mean, a contralto can't choose to be a soprano and trained to be one because it's not natural for her voice type and would damage it. I can't figure out how a countertenor can also be a baritone! Very puzzling as they are polar opposites voice types.

Andreas Scholl est un baryton à la base, mais qui chante en contre-ténor, donc en utilisant exclusivement sa voix de fausset (falsetto), qui n'est pas la voix de tête. Il le dit lui-même qu'il n'a pas travaillé sa vraie voix, sa voix naturelle (baryton) et que la voix de falsetto demande une technique vocale exigeante et qu'il a dû faire un choix. C'est la raison pour laquelle, ici, sa voix de baryton se révèle telle qu'elle est, brute, sans avoir été travaillée. Il est logique qu'elle soit moins belle. Les femmes peuvent le faire aussi, mais ce n'est pas reconnu par la méthode traditionnelle de chant lyrique italien, car il faut bloquer la gorge. C'est ce que font les sopranos coloratures actuelles, comme Nathalie Dessay.

Contre-ténor n'est pas à proprement parler une voix, mais une technique vocale. Dinc, oui, c'est un choix.

@XDranzer000 Ça, j'en doute! Je dirais plutôt que Philippe Jaroussky est un ténor rien qu'à entendre sa voix parlée. Je l'ai aussi entendu chanter dans sa voix "normale" et franchement, c'est pas un baryton.

@countertenors Eeek you mentioned the "f" word, falsetto! Depends on the school one belongs to, but to me falsetto isn't what Jacek or Andreas are using. Maybe Justin Timberlake, but not these countertenors.

That's falsetto appoggiato with a good vocal folds closure as opposed to phoniatric falsetto that doesn't have a good closure and is quite breathy, less powerful and less readjusted in timbre. It's still falsetto tho and it's what we call in italy singing countertenor: you either do it in falsetto or, in ancient times, there were castrated singers who developed special androginous voices we cannot hear anymore since castrating a child in order to make a special castrato singer is not in fashion anymore.
