Sisyphus peered into the mist A stone's throw from the precipice, paused Did he jump or did he fall as he gazed into the maw of the morning mist? Did he raise both fists and say, "To hell with this, " and just let the rock roll? Let it roll, let it crash down low There's a house down there but I lost it long ago Let it roll, let it crash down low See my house down there but I lost it long ago Well, I let the rock roll on down to the town below We had a house down there but I lost it long ago Lost it long ago Na-na-na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na-na I'm letting it roll away It's got nothing to do with fate And everything to do with you I'd rather fail like a mortal than flail like a god on a lightning rod History forgets the moderates For those who sit Recalcitrant and taciturn You know I'd rather turn and burn than scale this edifice, yeah Where's my accomplice? So take my hand, we'll do more than stand Take my hand, we'll claim this land Take my hand, and we'll let the rock roll Let it roll, let it crash down low There's a house down there but I lost it long ago Let it roll, let it crash down low See my house down there but I lost it long ago Lost it long ago Na-na-na-na-na-na-na Na-na-na-na-na-na I'm letting it roll away It's got nothing to do with fate And everything to do with Sisyphus peered into the mist A stone's throw from the precipice, paused

Nerd Alert: So, I read the artist's description, and I see that the song is supposed to be about “...being addicted to your own suffering..." but Camus's interpretation of the myth is so much better! Sisyphus released attachment to his punishment, not the rock. He still rolled that boulder every day, but he set himself free from punishment by doing it well and therefore overcoming the absurdity of his eternal fate. It's a story of defiance and strength through deciding not to be a victim rather than that of addiction to suffering. Having said that, it's a cool and intelligent song, and Bird's interpretation matches American culture better. I like how he humanizes Sisyphus. Translations of the Greek myth are open to interpretation, but I like trying to apply it to my life and contemplate my own existence. In modern life, everyone has to wake up and role that rock every day, but whether we go about it like we are punished or strong is up to us. Thanks, Andrew Bird, for getting that philosophic with it!

@MAGNUSERNST

As I understand the lyrics in context with Andrew Bird's quotes, the old sisyphus who tried to outsmart the gods is the one longing for immortality. The guy rolling the boulder is the one accepting his role (rather than seeing it as fate or a burden) and knowing what he is rolling the boulder for. His loved ones.

But that's also being addicted to suffering. You can't be always fighting, because if you're always into something when you have the time to live freely? It isn't being a conformist neither. For me it is about finding some sort of balance between pushing through and at the same time being able to connect with other different things. I love both Andrew's and Camus interpretation by the way. I'm just proposing other perspective. Thank you for bringing that up!

when I was a child I'd always have the same nightmare over and over againg about giant rocks rolling down a hill. and I'd get terrified they'd crush me, but I couldn't stop staring up and watching them roll down towards me. The strange thing is that when they finally came to the bottom of the hill, they were tiny, tiny rocks which always amazed me and provided an oddly satisfying end to a horrible nightmare. From observation in real life I realized pretty quickly that shorter distances between the object and the observer actually make them look bigger, not smaller. And somehow I expected the dream to abide by the laws of physics. night after night I'd dream about this and forget the rocks were bigger when they were far, get scared they'd crush me -- but never walk away for some reason -- and then relieved when they fell on the ground, so tiny. I'd look at them, amazed by how strange this situation was, and then I'd wake up all sweaty from this anxiety-induced dream and think about how this did not make sense at all until I fall sleep againg. this video really reminds me of that dream.

Well, hyper focus on things can change your perception of reality, like things going into slow motion as adrenaline kicks in or objects appearing larger than they are during an intense situation. Of course dreams don't adhere to any sense of reality or principles of physics.

I find your interpretation of your dream fascinating...I love dreams good and bad because they always have even the smallest bit of a spiritual representation of reality..The human brain is a work of art and so to are the dreams we sometimes find ourselves held to live against our will..But if you understand even a little bit of the puzzle piece by piece you'll see a fuller picture...Perhaps your anxiety of noticing the rocks are falling IS the anxiety itself..the very fact that you are witnessing an unstoppable force that is in the far distance of time but may inevitably crush you if choices in your real life are not dealt with in the allotted time given by life....or it could be (of thousands of different interpretations) your more worried about things that haven't happened yet and the stones becoming small is your subconscious mind telling your consiount self that by the time you'll have to face those problems they won't be as frightening as the thought of you thinking they were supposed to be frightening..thanks for sharing really makes us wonder...what DO they ever really mean...

Love this song! It’s got intelligent lyrics, an interesting chord progression, a good melody and lead vocal plus a nice harmony vocal plus a whistle intro and solo! I became an instant fan! I’m old school and don’t hear many newer artists who can really grab my attention but you did! That you have a classical violin background makes all the difference! Bravo, Andrew!

In Greek mythology Sisyphus or Sisyphos was the king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth). He was punished for his self-aggrandizing craftiness and deceitfulness by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top, repeating this action for eternity. King Sisyphus also betrayed one of Zeus's secrets by revealing the whereabouts of Aegina, (an Asopid who was taken away by Zeus) to her father (the river god Asopus) in return for causing a spring to flow on the Corinthian acropolis. Zeus then ordered Death (in Greek, Thanatos) to chain King Sisyphus down below in Tartarus. Sisyphus was curious as to why Charon, whose job it was to guide souls to the Underworld, had not appeared on this occasion. King Sisyphus slyly asked Thanatos to demonstrate how the chains worked. As Thanatos was granting him his wish, Sisyphus seized the opportunity and trapped Thanatos in the chains instead. Once Thanatos was bound by the strong chains, no one died on Earth. This caused an uproar especially for Ares (who was annoyed that his battles had lost their fun because his opponents would not die), and so he intervened. The exasperated Ares freed Thanatos and turned King Sisyphus over to him. Before King Sisyphus died, he had told his wife to throw his naked body into the middle of the public square (purportedly as a test of his wife's love for him). This caused King Sisyphus to end up on the shores of the river Styx. Then, complaining to Persephone, goddess of the Underworld, that this was a sign of his wife's disrespect for him, King Sisyphus persuaded her to allow him to return to the upper world. Once back in Ephyra, the spirit of King Sisyphus scolded his wife for not burying his body and giving it a proper funeral (as a loving wife should). When King Sisyphus refused to return to the Underworld, he was forcibly dragged back there by Hades. In another version of the myth, Persephone was tricked by Sisyphus that he had been conducted to Tartarus by mistake, and so she ordered that he be released. As a punishment for his trickery, Zeus made King Sisyphus roll a huge boulder endlessly up a steep hill.The maddening nature of the punishment was reserved for King Sisyphus due to his hubristic belief that his cleverness surpassed that of Zeus himself. Zeus accordingly displayed his own cleverness by enchanting the boulder into rolling away from King Sisyphus before he reached the top, which ended up consigning Sisyphus to an eternity of useless efforts and unending frustration. Thus it came to pass that pointless or interminable activities are sometimes described as Sisyphean. King Sisyphus was a common subject for ancient writers and was depicted by the painter Polygnotus on the walls of the Lesche at Delphi.

That was rather long winded. It quite simply echoes the Promethean struggle, repetition ad infinitum, chained to it. And Finley was right, at the end of the Epic Cycle, there's no way Homer wrote both The Iliad and The Odyssey.... Dactylic hexameter be damned.

@@Katerinaliona Que? If you're referencing the song in some way, I'd just say there are as many ways to interpret it as there are ways to interpret the works of Camus. I wouldn't say the most clearly compelling of either such interpretations relate to what I was able to extract from what you said.
