He's perhaps best known for his role as the life saving superhero Spiderman but in his new film, Tick Tick… Boom, Andrew Garfield plays a struggling composer tortured by the fact he can't prevent his friends dying one after the other.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Set in New York at the height of the Aids epidemic, it's the true story of Jonathan Larsen whose musical Rent revolutionised musical theatre.
The theme of "running out of time" was especially acute for Garfield after his mother passed away just before filming began.
Garfield has received an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category for his role in the movie.
He spoke to Jackie Long about art, the challenges of fame and the pain of grief.

When I hear Andrew talk about losing his mother it makes me feel sad for him. I lost my dad when I was 25, almost 16 years ago. I remember that day. I was in college, nursing school. I felt an overwhelming sense of lostness and just not knowing what or how to do anything. As soon as I got home (I was living with my mom at the time), I just dropped everything and put my arms around her and I remember telling her she better not leave me too. You never get too old to need and love your parents. Time may soften the pain, but you never forget them. That's how they live on is through us and our memories of them. I wish I could give Andrew a hug; him and anyone else who feels this loss. You're not alone even when you feel like you are.

My dad died when I was 3 years old, I realized it when I was 5 cause my parents where split. My mum died when I was 22 due to cancer. I was with her all the time. I cleaned her and sat with her in her room in the hospital until her parents came for some hours. My thoughts where the same as yours. I just wanted to hug him cause I know exactly how it feels.

my dad died 3 years ago, when I was 15. Listening to him talk about loss, I understand it very deeply. it breaks my heart every day and the grief never leaves, it becomes part of you and it takes so much time to try to balance out everything. he's right, you think you are the only one who has lost their parent. Anyways, I'm saying this from the pov of a teenager and he's talking as a 38-year-old man. it's just beautiful how loss affects everyone in very different and yet same way.

I am so grateful for the incredible gift Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Johnathan Larson is with bringing him to life in Tick, Tick... Boom! I find myself completely mesmerised everytime I hear Andrew speak. Pure poetry in motion; his voice, his compassion, depth of understanding, and humble sense of being, where even in short interviews he takes us on an incredible journey. I felt the stabbing heartache of knowing that "lonely" and "precise agony", as he described the loss of his mother, and then a lightness of being, sharing how he feels her hand on his shoulder and hears his name in missing her. A beautiful and talented man on so many levels, and love, Love, LOVE his sense of humour ❤

Back in 2012 Andrew came into a store I worked at near the airport while he was on a layover in Tampa. I had no idea who he was but he looked familiar to me. I told him as much complimented his accent & he said he loved mine as well. We chatted for a good 20mins, he was SO kind & asked me all kinds of things about myself & laughed at my terrible attempt at mimicking his accent. At the end of it he asked if I'd like to join him for dinner before he left that evening & I told him I couldn't because I had to work (still not knowing who he was, just a really cute guy) & then he asked for my phone number & I had to decline because I was dating someone. He said "If we should ever meet again may we both be single, or at the very least, happy." I wished him a safe flight & when he left my employee ran up to me & said "That was the guy from Social Network!" (I'd never seen it) The One That Got Away. If I ever see him again IM GIVING HIM MY NUMBER haha

@Joey Stocato, he holds dual U.K. / U.S. citizenship because he was born in Los Angeles and his dad was from California and his mum was from Essex and his family moved to London when he was three so that's the reason that he can jump very easily between using both an English accent and an American one, isn't it? On the plus side for him if he's ever given any honours by H.M. The Queen then because of his dual nationality he can display each of them, can't he? In fact if she were to knight him he'd be quite entitled ( both figuratively and literally ) to be called Sir Andrew Garfield if he wanted to. He's such a nice bloke anyway and I doubt very much if he'd do that during any of his future acting rôles and the same is true of Anthony Hopkins, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart who never do that when they're starring in films, in television series or onstage because they see no necessity to do that. On the other hand when they're being interviewed they're often referred to by their titles as well as their names. The same goes for Helen Mirren, Maggie Smith and Angela Lansbury all of whom are Dames and would likewise be entitled to have their titles on full display for us all to see, wouldn't they?
