Thank you again about a very interesting video. I have already seen some videos about Andrew and the new MoFi speaker… and listening always the explanation about the first approach to big concentric woofers, but each of the times I always remember part of the Tannoy range 😉 They always believe in this philosophy.

Nice looking speakers. I've always been a fan of the oversize bookshelf format. 8" seems to be the minimum to get real punchy bass in a 2 driver design. 10" is the sweet spot for most home listening because it sounds good at low volume, fills the room with sound and can party when you need it to.

What a great interview. I always enjoy Andrew Jones explaining his work. An unusual blend of engineering genius combined with a really personable guy. I look forward to your impressions of the sound. Already I can say I think they look great. I learned a great deal from his discussion building on input from others. I use a 60-year-old coaxial driver from Japan with a paper cone and alnico magnets. I think it sounds pretty good and this is without the advanced engineering Andrew has employed to build this new speaker.

I can't wait for Steve's review. Given AJ's description it sounds like (no pun intended) these speakers may be what I've always wanted: A coaxial speaker with the sound characteristics of a Klipsch Heresy III/IV. Meaning punch you in the face dynamics, detail and transparency (Heresy's are underrated in this regard IMHO, and efficiency to allow for low power amps if desired.

Did I miss Andrew saying that this new speaker design of his has the sound characteristics of the Klipsch Heresy III/IV? Those particular speakers from Klipsch are legendary for the beautiful sound they are capable of producing. Those are awful big shoes to fill. Not that I don't think a great designer like Andrew Jones isn't capable of filling them. It is the wee hours of the morning so it's entirely possible that I nodded off for a moment and missed part of the interview. I suppose I should listen to the interview again when I'm a bit more alert.

Way back in the day, I got a chance to listen to two models of Tannoy floor standing coaxial speakers a couple of times. Specifics are lost to the depths of space-time and increasingly glitchy memory from this aging slushware, but they were either available with 10 or 12 inch drivers or possibly 12 or 15 inch drivers with 1 (plus?) inch coaxial tweeters. I was in the market for a quality portable stereo cassette recorder [gasp!] at the time, not speakers. However, as we were the only customers (a friend and I) present at this small operation, the shop owner was quite happy to show off these new (to both him and us) speakers, for which he was the only dealer in a large area. Again details are no longer available, but I do recall being impressed by them at the time. Although I have pretty much gotten off the merry-go-round [I miss Sam Tellig] now, I await your actual review tomorrow.

Not sure if anyone else has said so but so much of the design philosophy mirrors that of Tannoy old range of dual Concentrics. A bit smaller, but still so much in common with say 12" Lancasters. Paper cone, dual concentric, box proportions... And on a lot of material that was a stunningly good speaker.

It seems that what goes around… Apparently, the old timers knew a thing or two. After all the intervening years, we end up back at paper cones and wide roll surrounds 👍. This driver is not far removed from what Tannoy has been offering since the 50s, albeit at a much higher price point. When I tried out a pair of Tekton Lores a couple of years ago, I was surprised that they had a 10” doped paper cone woofer with wide roll surrounds. They indeed had great bass with minimal cone excursion, so I get where Andrew is coming from. It works very well. I read up a bit more on these and was surprised to learn that the woofer “only” goes down to 43Hz with no specified roll off. I imagine that in-room response would bring that down to 30Hz or so though, which would be good enough for me. Well done, Andrew and Steve 🙂

I bet they are similar - but surely better than my KEF Q60s I have in my bedroom. The Q60s are very sweet and make an excellent bedroom speaker. When I first got my KEF Q60s (when they first came out) a recording studio owner would bring mixes to my loft to hear his recordings on my Q60s. These new Andrew Jones MoFi speakers must have great imaging that you get with the concentric drivers. By the way I had ESS speakers in my living space in my loft 1000 sq ft, and the Q60s I originally had in my photo studio 1000 sq ft area.

Finally, someone is looking back into displacement instead of all these damn tiny bookshelf types. I keep asking for 15s, which is at the threshold of 'life-size' sound. I have DIY 12s and had to pry that information from modern audiophiles trying to satisfy some overbearing "WAF" factor. Paul Carmody just came out with a 12" three-way kit. diysoundgroup was playing with larger (Eminence?) concentric driver designs as well.
