With the closing of "Phantom of the Opera," and his latest musical, "Bad Cinderella," there is no Andrew Lloyd Webber production on Broadway for the first time in 43 years. The composer who helped define musical theater over the past half-century talks with correspondent Seth Doane about theater's future; the problem with the Tony Awards; writing music for Britain's new king; and the death of his son, Grammy-nominated composer Nicholas Lloyd Webber.

This made me teary-eyed, partly for the loss of his son, and partly because his music is so beautiful.

Broadway needs to do something to make the brand more attainable. I went to NYC in April to immerse myself in the Broadway experience...something I hadn't done in a decade. 3 shows in 2 days. I saw "Some Like It Hot" (GO SEE THIS SHOW!!!), the revival of "Parade" (HEARTBREAKINGLY WONDERFUL) and ended with "Phantom" (my 4th time) one more time. Those 3 shows cost around $550.00 and with the exception of "Hot", my seats at the other 2 were well up into the mezzanine. Discounts are few and far between now. I used to be able to see 3 shows for around $350 and I ALWAYS sat in the front of the orchestra. Those days are unfortunately long gone. As a music teacher in an inner city where most of the families are considered low-income, I know that most, if not all of my students will never be able to know the thrill of attending a Broadway show. It's just too expensive for the masses. That is both a shame and a travesty.

Lord Webber has made a huge impact on Broadway (Cats, Evita, Starlight Express, Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, and School of Rock) have entertained generations of fans. It is so uncanny not to have one of his shows in NYC.

I think the common opinion of ALW will change over time. I understand the pooh-poohing but, I dare any Counterpoint student to analyze the 'Cats' Overture fugue and find the holes. Likewise, the contrapuntal writing of 'Prima Donna' and 'Past the Point of No Return' (trio) are devilishly intricate. Also, the non-diatonic sections of 'Evita' cause fear for the ensemble. There is a reason ALW and Sondheim had a healthy respect for each other - they made each other work just a little bit harder without compromising their aesthetics.

Maybe this Sunday Morning interview is an example of "Just let someone talk about their life and they will usually come off pretty well." I was shocked shortly after Stephen Sondheim died last year and his estate was estimated at only $75 million -- compared to Andrew Lloyd Weber's ("ALW") estimated estate of over $1 billion when my life, for example, has been enriched by Sondheim's music 10x more than ALW's music (and I know I'm not alone). But perhaps that comparison is silly because even ALW doesn't measure his success primarily in terms of financial profitability (no matter what his critics claim). Who has sold more books, Victor Hugo or Charles Dickens? Does it matter, or is the reality that both authors have enriched the lives of millions of people all around the world? ALW has entertained millions and his shows have sold countless tickets to live performances. If his hits have dwarfed all other shows, no harm done. His son's untimely death earlier this year is a reminder that all the money in the world can't buy another day.

When I remember it right, he himself called „Andrew Lloyd Webbers Cinderella“, how it was called at this time, a costly mistake, and his behavior towards his London ensemble wasn‘t very nice to put it mildly, not to mention the feud with Patti LuPone. So, I#m sorry but hearing him bath himself in his successes from yesteryear, has always a slightly bitter taste…
@DivineVarodChannel

The costly mistake he meant was opening too early and it falling victim to unexpected Covid regulations making it impossible too sustain eventually ...
@tillchakraborty7482
@tillchakraborty7482 Жыл бұрын
@@DivineVarodChannel Well, if you think so, ok, but when I watched the reactions of the ensemble, when this was read to the audience and them, I guess they, like me, had a different opinion what he meant. And in the end, to be one of the first to open after the pandemic, was one of the main reasons why the critics where so positive. In a normal season the wind might have blown a little more harsh in his face from the beginning.
@Midlander83
@Midlander83 Жыл бұрын
@@tillchakraborty7482 why on earth would he say that about his own show when he already had a Broadway transfer planned? It was really obvious what he meant - the trouble was the manner of the closure had understandably left the audience hostile that night and they heard what they wanted to hear. No one reading that letter in context with a fair mind would take it as a denouncement of the show or its cast. Criticise him for the way the closing announcement was handled - that’s fair game. But this obsession some have with wilfully misinterpreting that letter - I don’t get it.
