“Senior Conservatives are complaining about the Prime Minister’s lack of competence”. Whoever could have seen that coming when they selected someone who was obviously not up to the job in the first place. Her first actions were to select a Chancellor, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary who also aren’t up to the job. Can we please return this government as “not fit for purpose”.

Pardon this Scot for rather remembering Truss insisting she would "ignore" the (unlike her) democratically elected and hugely popular First Minister of Scotland because she is "an attention seeker". That set the scene clearly for the treatment Scotland could expect from this latest leader of a party we Scots last voted for in 1955.

@@229andymon Please, not this old nonsense again! Scotland would not survive 6 months separated from the rest of the UK. For starters, it would lose the extra money it gets via the Barnett formula. Then which currency would it use? If the Pound, then it would be linked to decisions made in London. If the Euro, then its financial decisions would be made in Brussels. Then how would it finance its own Army, Navy and Airforce etc? Oil is on a downer, so revenues from that cannot be relied upon for the future. And I am sure there are a hundred other things we know nothing about which an independent Scottish government would have to be responsible for. Just give up this delusion, it is almost as bad as the Welsh with their dreams. It is sad really, because the UK as a whole is a great success. The devolved nations might not think so, but they would find out otherwise to their absolute horror if they ever went down the foolish path of independence.

Unfortunately I believe we can only expect a temporary reprieve at best. England will default back to the Tories before too long. Assuming the Tories can't rescue victory from defeat that is, which, with the help of a right-wing Brit press and media, isn't a crazy idea. A week's a long time in politics as they say and Brits have notoriously short memories.

@@229andymon at the risk of being That Guy on the Soapbox, I believe that is down to us,and the journalism we choose to support. I'll be entirely honest,I can't remember everything that's gone on in politics, and I'm pretty engaged with it. Someone less engaged has no chance. This may sound a bit highbrow, but I can't think of a better phrasing - journalists are our collective memory. They remind us of what has happened before that is relevant to what is happening now If we only have journalists funded by the usual establishments, they get to choose what gets remembered when we need it. I'm an Irishman. The same lesson applies to every country's citizens. If you vote for a party that promises you short term gain, then in the longer term you have to understand what the likely consequences to the economy and society of that short term gain are. Voters everywhere concentrate on getting more money from a budget, or getting through the next 12 months. That's a sure way to end up several years later paying the price for failing to realise this basic fact: Governments always sell themselves to voters' limitations and manipulate voters self-interest, complacency and ignorance. It is the voters who have to take responsibility for not realising they are being played.

The point of Truss is the same as was the point of Johnson, and will be the point of Starmer: keep the people occupied with nonsense while their economy is flattened and they are transformed into serfs.

Keir Starmer and the Labour Party are nothing of the sort. You need to do more research about how each party differs before drawing a conclusion that all parties are the same.

The people wanted this high-risk government but there's no one competent who wants to run a high-risk government because a government shouldn't be a high-risk... And when incompetent people take on a high-risk job they cause fatalities. Competent people have continuously warned us but the majority ignored them.

This government has done more in history to help people out, but the miserable ungrateful and moaning classes simply cannot give them any credit. Yes, mistakes have been made as all governments make mistakes at times, but believe you me, a Labour government controlled by the militant unions would ruin this country big time. The extreme left are only interested in politics and dogma, not real people and their real problems. Labour, the Lib Dems, and the SNP are just the sort of people who would say anything to bamboozle the electorate to get into power and get their snouts in the trough!

It will be interested to see if some Tory MPs who are livid at the ideological incompetence shown by the Truss government, decide to say that enough is enough and cross the floor of the House to join the Lib Dems or the Labour Party. It wouldn't surprise me if some of them do so when Parliament reconvenes.
