Dive into Manila's Happy Land, where the locals have turned recycling into an art form. Ever heard of "PagPag"? It's a dish whipped up from fast food leftovers, and it's a lifeline for many here. But there's a catch: while it showcases incredible resourcefulness, it's also tinged with danger. In this video we cover the surprising truths behind PagPag, revealing both its risks and the undeniable grit and spirit of Manila's slums.

Brooklyn is so ready for a pagpag pop-up! Between the dumpster-diver culture and the extent to which foodies are getting a bit bored with dishes like sisig, but still want to embrace the culture, this seems like an obvious next move!.

I know a Filipino lady whose mom actually sells pagpag. She was actually very shy initially to let me know about her "family business" but once we became close she gave me plenty of information about this kind of food. I'm a little surprised that this vendor did not boil the meat before the marination process. This is to give the impression that the meat is very clean. A rice meal with pagpag sells for 20-30 pesos in my friend's mom's stall

The mental hurdle is to great a leap for me to overcome, regardless how "safe" or "clean" it is. No human being should have to eat someone's leftovers thrown in the trash. There's a certain dignity everyone deserves to have, and food is a basic survival need. To us, it's extreme. To them, it's their way of life. It's all they've ever known and will likely ever know. Lastly, all that fast food cooked in toxic seed oils consumed on a daily basis causes all kinds of illnesses, from diabetes to heart disease, obesity, etc. Eating friend chicken alone does not cover the body's need for essential nutrients. These people are poor and nutritionally deficient in the most severe way. And there's nothing they can do about it because poverty. Man, this sucks.

My family left in the 70s and nothing changes there. Still massive poverty while the oligarchs who rule get rich and these people survive on garbage food. We left for the us when I was nine and very grateful for it. When a nations prime source of national revenues are expatriates working overseas and sending money back to their families there's something wrong with that. I feel lucky that my family left especially when these kinds of documentaries remind me of the tragic circumstances that man y Filipino s live in.

What’s more heartbreaking is that the people who make the laws are the ones who can afford to be worried about things like getting sick- it is survival for some of these people. We have similar cuisine during the time of Korean War in 1953. Its called "Boodae Jjigae" its like spicy hotpot food. Today this cuisine is very popular but the History of cuisine carries sad story. During Korean war there was many people dying of hunger. So Koreans had to sneak in or wait for the food waste coming out from U.S Army camp. (The food trash compose of spam ham. noodle. Hotdogs. Etc) Hungry Koreans gather all that food trash and made it as Hotpot during the harsh cold winter.. to remind. winter time in Korean peninsula is more colder than Russia. Know South Korea is Rich country and Ranks in World Top 2 Powerful Passport Index. but we had a painful history and the "Boodae jjigae" hotpot is like pagpag. which kept our ancestors alive and build our country strong and rich. God bless Philippines ❤

I studied at a Canadian University. Our school had an all you can eat cafeteria. The food was superb, yet many students dumped their trays with food barely eaten, untouched - entire burgers, dishes, pasta, etc. Just outside the building there were carbon protesters. I'm too sick and tired to even get into the hypocrisy, but if people could just take a look this, how desparate people from other parts of the world are about food, maybe they would value their food more and start acting by simply not wasting, rather than having the meaningless protests.

I grew up in poverty in Metro Manila but never never tried this. I remember watching a documentary about this at our neighbor's because we didn't have TV. For 50 pesos, there are other food options that can feed a family and are safe and healthy. These people are just way too stupid to resort to this. I lived in a family of five and my parents would often cook us omelet, sardines with vegetables, hotdogs, pinakbet, chop suey, fried tofu, etc. All with simple ingredients and costs around 50-60 pesos to this day. Twice a month they would spend 150-200 pesos to cook us chicken or pork dishes. This lifestyle helped us prevent heart and other diseases. Compare that to eating 50 pesos of trash per meal everyday. These people just prefer this kind of food. It's not like they don't have other choices.

As a Chef here in Napa Valley region I have nothing but admiration to the tenacity and resilience of the Poorest of the poor Filipinos. Their way of survival without government’s assistance is remarkable. The recycling process and recooking at very high temperature kills all bacteria after all making it deliciously crispy good and sustainable. Nothing to be ashamed of. Chef M.

if i ever get coerced to eat pagpag, i would pick a bony one and eat the crunchy ones only. those meaty ones are where bacteria would be i suspect.

In 1940-1960 in Asia the 2 most powerful countries are Japan 🇯🇵 and Philippines 🇵🇭. The slum like that in Vietnam 🇻🇳 yes before 2000! But nowadays, Vietnam 🇻🇳 is not really rich yet but we do have a house to live and decent foods (fresh foods) to eat. I agree with Andrew! I’ve been living in palawan Philippines for 6 months in summer 1991 and it’s hot more than mine Đà Nẵng city. And of course at that time I landed at Manila’s airport and Manila City were far more than Ho Chi Minh City at the time.

People from other countries are just exploiting our country for contents. We appreciate that content creators and vloggers choose Ph because it adds new market for our tourism but try to create new contents. This was featured so many times.

I shot four episodes in Ph. I don’t think the content I covered is much documented at all. Pagpag may be the exception.

They shouldn't allow this, those guys who sells it are just taking advantage of those people. There are a lot more cheaper alternatives to get food in the Philippines, guys in the slums thinks its ok coz they are uneducated about it. The government should take action.
