In essence, all digital. Using a Behringer X32 with an S16 extension as the audio interface, and running mainly my guitar rig into it (a Helix Rack, a POD Pro xt, an HX Stomp and a BIAS Rack, plus a DI - of course I have more obscure stuff I can reamp through) plus some vocal mics. I also have three V30 1x12s miced up with SM57s all the time, powered from 90W pedalboard power amps, though I will eventually be powering them with a triple 20W 6V6 push-pull tube power amp of my own making once that is done and tested. Other than that, no outboard gear (not counting MIDI controllers, of course). Since the X32 and all the guitar stuff lives in a rack, there actually is literally nothing on my desk except for MIDI controllers. However, I'm in the process of moving into a new apartment I just bought this week, and the new studio there will be greatly expanded in some key areas. First of all, this will be a multi-computer setup, focusing mostly on Samples and MIDI, and the DAW will be beefed up with a secondary PC running some OSC touchscreen remote control stuff for the DAW, so I will have to touch that as little as possible. This will be in a multi-room config, meaning that all the noisy stuff will live in a compartment in the attic, that includes machines and guitar speakers - I expect the control room to be ultimately not even having a single fan blowing in it.

@@AndrewMasters I did the same thing with the GA Pre73 MKIII/EQ81 MKII's, 2 of each one with a COMP-3A and one with a COMP-2A, also have 2 of the Comp54 MKII's. I run a pretty well built hybrid system I built from cheaper pieces first then added affordable but quality pieces. I have 4 ART TPS II pre-amps, i used them a ton in a studio I worked in and you cant beat them for the price. As far as my console (in the box), I use a softtube Console One and Fader One for Logic Pro X and a mix of softube, TC Electronics and Waves plugins, with a Behringer X touch for my main logic workflow. I run directly through my DI, use plugins as needed if needed, but sparingly, I run out to a Studio Master (analog console) 16-4-2 Series 5 mixing desk, and whatever outboard gear I want to insert at that point and into a TEAC A-2300sx, then back into the box for final mix and then for mastering, ill keep the masters digital if no analog mastering is necessary. I really love that desk you have Andrew. That has been my bane, for the limited space I have and the kit, two amps, two extension cabs, 4 interfaces/synths, many guitars and basses, mics, stands, cables etc. Footprint is everything, and my current desk has a side car with 12u rack, filled, and another 4 u rack on top of it filled. Plusthe 2u's on my desk and another 6 on the other side. I need a desk like yours! \

I bought one, to try out. I just LOVE the 73 eq- So, I just bought another one...I'm only doing two tracks at a time,. ( I'm not recording drums, or full bands). At least I can run those in stereo....I'm stoked! You inspired me to do the 'console thing'- It makes sense, to me. IF I was doing drums, and bands..I'd def. get 10 or 12 of these. There are GREAT pieces of gear! Warm Audio has invaded my studio, and taken over.

Nice setup and playing. The concept of having a ‘console that’s not a conole’ by fronting a DAW with a group of high quality mic pre’s is becoming a fairly common approach and makes sense versus owning a full console. With the pre’s having both Mic and Line inputs you could leverage them as external hardware in Pro Tools to bus out and back in just to add some of that character to a track during mixing.

I like it because you can play with different Pres that all have a different flavor. In this case he went with all Neve style but throwing down a WA-412 or whatever instead of the 73s and you could have any range of Pres that fit your needs.

Agree on the Neve vs Warm. Own a BAE 1023 and it is cutting hairs for the money. Have a 6 channel (technically 7 with the BAE) as a side car for mixing and it is great. Do not get me wrong, the BAE is stellar and I would own 6 but the cost is just dumb for the end result comparison. Used 4 channels on a small trap kit and it was some of the best drums I have ever recorded. Full commit on the EQ! Great stuff!

In pre-amp land, I have a WA273, but the rest of my "neve" duties are 2 of the GAP PREQ-73 and 2 GAP Pre-73. So 6 channels of neve flavour. Then I've got 6 channels of API style which is a WA412 and 2 WA12's. TOO much fun! Andrew beautiful setup man. There is something special about recording through all the same pre’s. I owned a Control 24 console from 2010 -2015, when I finally figured out what a d-sub connector was and hooked up the on board Focusrite pre’s, Wow… it had a world of difference recording a full band. Gave some kind of coherent glue. It just sounded right. Rock on with your 73 setup 🤘🏽

You’ve gotta check out the new warm audio fuzz and phaser pedals. They sound great and like with everything they make, look cool too. Also I wish I could remember the name, but there is some Chinese neural dsp like knock off pedal unit. It profiles amps and pedals and it’s only 300-400 bucks depending on who’s selling it. Seems almost too good to be true, but if it is true, you can literally get a neural dsp for 300 bucks. Even looks the same.

I did a shootout of my warm audio 76 to a genuine vintage blue stripe as well as a modern 11-76-LN, and I threw the pro tools plug-in BF-76 for good measure. I did many tests with different ratios and input and output settings. I carefully matched the settings of all of 4 compressors, and the warm Audio was undeniably the worst, every single time I'm weary of warm audio now because my 600 dollar unit sounded noisy, shrill and thin in comparison Signal flow of comparison: DI Guitar > JDI direct box > SSL 4000 E channel with no EQ or Dynamics applied > direct out into pro tools Next I multed the output in pro tools to send the same original audio file to 3 separate outputs which returned to the line level inputs on the console. I applied the compressors as inserts on each channel, which was then returned onto 3 blank tracks on pro tools

@@lancetownsend6226 I know I’m interested. This is not to knock the video or the creator. I think Warm has great prices but I think they sound like their prices, inexpensive. I’ve worked with a few pieces and each time found them underwhelming. I haven’t tried these 1073’s tbh but I do own the Neve 1073DPA and it sounds insane. I’d love to compare the two myself. I think Warm could be good as an intermediary on your way to owning the great stuff but I think you’re better off waiting and saving up for something better. Oh and the stock BF76 (and stock Sansamp) are slept on plug-ins. That compressor sounds great working hard on aggressive vocals.
@lancetownsend6226
@lancetownsend6226 2 жыл бұрын
@@ilikemyrealname rereading my original comment it definitely doesn't have the same message as I intended, i also failed to mention that in the same time frame I borrowed a WA-2A from my school (where I did these tests) and compared it to a vintage LA-2A we have in the same room. The WA-2A sounded MUCH better than my WA-76 and was much closer to the unit it's modeled after. Out of curiosity, I've shown many of my teachers some of the recordings I got that night. The more people I talk to, the more I'm convinced my unit could potentially be defective which is unfortunate. With a 4:1 ratio the WA-76 sounded very comparable to the 11-76-LN, closer in relationship to the 2A comparison I mentioned. But the higher the ratio, the worse it got. With an all buttons in comparison, the signal that came out of the WA-76 was actually worse than the original signal I am away from my computer at the moment but I'll upload the 4:1 comparisons and the all buttons in comparison to Google drive in the morning and reply to this comment

@@ilikemyrealname I just meant that I unintentionally was trashing warm audio as a whole when in reality it was just my experience with one warm audio unit

The 273 pre sounds great. The version with the EQ doesn't sound as good to me though. I had to return it because I just didn't like what it was doing. I now use my Orban 622B after the 273 with much better results.

Hey Andrew, thanks for great content! How do you go about tweaking your EQs if you yourself are the drummer and far away from controls? How did you dial in the gain for that matter?

thanks for this video! I've finally finally looking to get a 1073 sounding pre this year! What made you go with Warm Audio vs Heritage Audio? Also do you still have the video of the comparison of the Wa vs the Neve 1073 still?
