Anyone can fish a squarebill crankbait. However, selecting the RIGHT squarebill is an important aspect of catching bass. In this video, I break down exactly what squarebill's I fish throughout the year, when I change sizes, and why. I hope this helps you select the right squarebill next time you're on the water. I have been Bass fishing for thirty years and finally just this year have embraced the cranking game! WHAT A FOOL I HAVE BEEN ! I have caught some biggs on cranks this year and only now realized what I have been missing. So naturally I have been scouring you tube and magazines to get caught up on this technique. This video cuts through the fog of sizes and infinite colors to give me a path to work with and expand on in my lakes. Thanks for taking the time to teach and share with us. Good luck on tour.

Your video's are really great for people like me. I just got back into fishing and I fish Rayburn and Toledo. I find it really hard using these bait's in shallow water at Rayburn because of all of the grass. It seem's I'm spending so much time pulling grass off my line. I've got to get this figured out because buddies are fishing areas with these bait's catching fish. I really enjoy watching video's of yourself, Bradley, and Todd. Ya'll know your stuff and put out a lot of good content. Good luck on the tournament trail and keep on putting out these great video's.

@@AndrewUpshawFishing Having mentioned "specialty" rods, I've got to admit the importance of being able to feel what the bait is doing (collecting grass versus ticking the tops, for example). I'm an old-school student of David Fritts, who preached the importance of developing a "feel" that simply doesn't happen over night. (I wonder what ever became of my old half glass Fenwick Crankshaft rod).

Great Squarebill breakdown video! I fish local ponds down here in South Georgia in my Mainstream Jon Buoy kayak with a Minn Kota 40lb thrust trolling motor. These ponds have been dug out years and years ago, anywhere from 3-15 feet deep and are on land that has been owned by local families for generations. That being said, the bottoms are primarily soft dirt/mud and there are no “man-made” structures. It’s all natural. Water clarity is mostly stained or muddy. I mostly use Squarebills that run 1-5 feet deep (if I know the depth and the layout of the bottom). I have never used electronics in these ponds. Not because I don’t like it, but because I don’t have it. 😁 So I pretty much know what’s on the bottom (fallen trees, tree limbs, etc) just from fishing these ponds for so long. I’ll use your info in this video next time I fish these ponds and I’m sure my luck will increase. Appreciate you uploading this video. 😎👍

I agree with you, Andy. If anyone else could make a better squarebill, I'd fish it, too. Until then, I use Strike King's squarebills. River and creek fishing has led me to use the 1.5 and down in sizes. The big ones don't have a logical function to me yet. Those bigger square bills sure sound right for lake systems. You guys use a lot heavier line than I've seen in the Big Sky. Around here 12 pound test is pretty standard in what I've seen for the last 50 years. I buy an Ugly Stik at my sporting good store and strip them to the stick, rebuilding those 7' sticks into microwave guided rods that seem to come out with a medium/medium-fast kind of action. My square bill rods.
@AndrewUpshawFishing
@AndrewUpshawFishing 4 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting take on rods. You never have to worry about them breaking either! I use a lot of bigger baits on larger bodies of water. If I was creek fishing I would use the 1.0 almost exclusively, where quantity is more fun than quality in that situation. Sounds like you have it down though!

I love when you guys start talking about gear and come off with half a dozen "specialty" rods at $100+ a pop. I realize certain rods often do a better job than the next one, but you guys tend to forget that Lew's doesn't send my rods for free and I just spent $200 on Strike King crankbaits. So, my question is, what gear would I need if you had to BUY it?
@AndrewUpshawFishing

Murph-“You guys”? Who specifically are you referring to? I only talk about gear that I personally would buy. That’s a fact. I can show receipts of products I’ve purchased from TackleWarehouse that includes a lot of gear that I get for free, but needed more of products that I use. It’s hard to find fishing rods less than $100 that I would personally recommend. For just fun fishing on weekends, sure. As far as Lew’s is concerned, they just released the KVD lineup of rods that are $99 and from everything I’ve heard they are really good. I haven’t used one yet, but ordered a few this year to try out. Once I see what they are like, I will do a video on them explaining what I like/don’t like about them. Until then, the rods I recommended are the ones I would use, even if I were to buy them.

People can say what they want, but the Strike Pro Bubba was the original. 🤷‍♂️ The first L-shape lip came from Rapala I think.

Perch Squarebills KVD'S Hooks suck!I And the Cheap Plastic bills SUCK. But I hope they NEVER change that. They catch fish the way they are. I live on Lake Erie and Lakes nearby. Old school wigglewarts I MISS! Green Craw was my best back in the 80's 90's

Cata-wah-chee. It's been a dead body of water ever since KVD won the classic there.

That’s what I’ve heard. But part of that was a Hurricane too, wasn’t it?

Yeah the salt water backing up didnt help but the whole lake is only 3-4 feet deep. It completely grasses up in the summer so the oil companies sprayed it and killed all the grass. It never recovered.

You know it kills me how people always bitch about pro’s talking about using there sponsors gear, well they are providing the baits and in doing that they deserve the promotion if people don’t like it watch something else! And Strike King is everywhere almost every store that sells bait sells Strike King hell most gas stations that sell bait sells Strike King they are great baits and easy for the general public to get there hands on. Unlike some brands that aren’t easy to get and extremely over priced not mentioning any names( Megabass)!
