LG V40 ThinQ Camera Review - For the Content Creators

The LG V40 ThinQ is launching with 5 cameras and some pretty big hardware improvements overall, not to mention a ton of new modes, features and a slight camera software redesign as well. Manual mode is seeing a big upgrade with support for both 4K 60FPS video, as well as 4K HDR10 video recording support, giving content creators even more tools than they had with last year's LG V30. Is this $900 phone a content creator's dream? Is it still good for someone who isn't a power user? Find out in our review!

I just got the v40. Excellent phone. It's so light!! The camera coming from the note 8 is no comparison. Any update of getting a side by side with v40 before and after updates? Thx

@@evilmonstertruck I'm on the fence about it. I currently have the note 8 but I can't seem convince myself note 9 or v40. More battery n storage vs all those cameras, less battery and the feel of one. One is heavy and other is light and plastic like.

oh whoa! at 4:38 did he record the video using an LGv30? I know the V30 is an outstanding smartphone! I really like the lg v30 it was my first choice after switching to android so I might as well consider upgrading to the V40! nice video deserves many thumbs up !

We've been using the V30 as our way of recording KZfaq videos since last Fall. We've now switched to the V40 since it offers improved manual quality options over the V30. LG makes a fantastic device that's perfrect for this purpose.

Best phone I Ever had was the lg g3 . You could double tap on the camera screen to take a pic. Didn't have to tap the shutter button. Do the lg phones have that same feature?

I've been looking into this phone for primary use as a vlogging camera, I notice it zooms in a bit when on wide angle and activated as recording. Do you still think this would work well for vlogging?

I notice a limit of 5 minute record time for 4K... can that be changed or is that a built-in limit to prevent burning out the sensor? Also, did they remove HDMI support for the USB-C port?

At 2:10, how to have, like you, the manual settings on the bottom of the screen instead of the right side? I find it more user friendly to get the control sets on the bottom cuz i often misclick on other settings while i wanna change 1 selected setting.

Is it still like this even tho there's software update ? Because i'm gonna take this V40 or S9+ or P20 Pro. But if V40 still being like this (the Post Processing is bad, the Detail is bad) i'll not get the V40. I'm gonna take S9 or Note 8 or P20 Pro + Shanling M0....

I assume having a separated signal processor causes the wide angle camera not to have those downsides like not being able to switch to it after starting filming and not having a smooth seamless zoom. The question is why LG has to use a separated dsp? Can't the one in the SoC work with the wide angle camera? No support for it from Qualcomm?

Sd845 only support 2x16mp camera sensor at once. It's just so sad to see that the better quality sensor (wide angle) is left behind in video recording. I mean, you can still zoom digitally using normal lens, not the same with wide angle

You mention Log Video is exclusive to Cine Video. I use my V30 for the manual features and log video but can't confirm if the V40 still supports saving log video and if it's exclusive to the Cine Video do you still have all the manual features?

It does. Go into Manual Video Settings and select Save as HDR10.

I always shoot in Manual Mode on my LG V30. If you want to shoot auto shots, go to manual mode and tap the auto settings. You'll always get better pics.

tbh if the battery was a bit better, i would not be hesitated to buy this phone, not that i'm not aware of lg's power optimzation, but since i'm a fairly heavy user, more would be so nice

Does the front facing camera do 1080 @60 fps? And does the rear do 1080 @120 fps?

Front is max of 1080p30. Rear camera can do 1080p240 or 1080p120 for slowmo video. LG recently added a new interface for slowmo which adds the ability to record slowmo for the whole video, or only go slow when the slowmo button is pressed and held.

Wait so you shot with Bright Mode on the LG V40 and compared the pics with the Note 9 and Huawei in auto? Can you specify what pics used bright mode? All bright mode pics are trash..

We even tried clicking to focus just in case that was the issue. V30 uses PDAF and laser autofocus. This uses only dual-pixel PDAF (according to the spec sheet LG provided). Probably a difference between the two in lower contrast situations.

Like a lot of things, different items do different things better. My p20pro is the best point and shoot a picture phone I've ever had. Still doesn't come anywhere near my LGv30's manual videos and the Huawei's stabilization only works at 1080p. For nature and zooming into stuff I use a cheap Canon super zoom camera with 45 x optical zoom - light and great video quality.

My old V20 can switch between UltraWide and standard during video, and it’s wide is wayyyy wider than any new phones, around an 11mm 135 deg equiv I think.

Sony doesn't record in HDR10, it use Hybrid Log-Gamma, with wider color gamut and 10 Bits, witch is way better. Anyone who know about content creation prefer a flatter image.

Telephoto Camera can not be used in manual mode(only for manual focus), yes I agree they should give iso control, shutter speed,etc. But how can you figure out manual focus in zoom lens(maybe possible). *Its not a dslr with big optical lens* people need to be reminded again and again. Just buy an DSLR for gods sake. No one will criticize over past for exploding phones but every one will criticize for bootloops thats been fixed and a company thats trying to separate itself from another by doing it different.

Wide angle lens is fixed-focus but has offered manual mode since the beginning of the V-series. The "focus" option is just greyed out in manual mode when using wide-angle. The telephoto lens supports autofocus in auto mode when it can be used, so this theoretically shouldn't be a restriction. Either way, we want it for use on the channel (since this is now our main device for recording videos), so it's to our benefit to push LG to add it.

There is absolutely ZERO reason to buy a brand new phone in recent years. At this point you can go back and buy a brand new unlocked 2 year old phone with more features you would ever use....for less than 30% of the cost it was brand new. Put a sim card in with a $50 month to month service and you are good to go. I bought my v20 almost 3 years ago and it was the best phone I've ever had, amazing sound and photos. Total cost of use (with phone service): $65 a month. Just ordered the v40 as the upgrade replacement and no doubt I'll be happy with it for the next 3 years.

LG removed a lot of these collage-type features in their Oreo updates, so it's not clear if they'll add them back in with a future update or if they're gone for good.

Yeah the display is a lot better and cameras as well. Basically the entire phone is a big improvement over the V30 except the battery and notch, at least in my opinion. I think the battery should of been bigger and no notch then it would be the best phone ever but sadly not the case so it's just one of the best.

@@orbital16 yeah it's very clear and more natural shots than stock auto mod. But in stock manual mode you can still get decent shots. Auto focus and exposure in stock app is broken imo. So I'm using gcam for quick auto shots or landscape shots for hdr+

Well, the LG will drop their prices after 3-6 months. So, it would be a lot cheaper than the competition. I can buy the LG G7 for €400. Even the Samsung Galaxy S9 is €520 where I live. Samsung and LG used to have a similar pricing. But this year I see that Samsung drops their prices slower, and starts off with a higher price than LG.

The V20 is simply an amazing phone, the screen is about 16 hours per day and I use three batteries with the top quality charging case, the phone has zero competition. If the V40 had replaceable batteries I would buy one instantly, otherwise it will be another V20 👌.

it sounds like you're just parroting what other reviewers that hate on LG are saying. looking at your samples I saw plenty of shots that the V40 looked better than the competition. there were a few that you couldn't tell much of a difference at all, and some where the V40 didn't look as good but there are more options to correct a less than great picture on the V40 than the competition. it's the same thing every year, Huawei and Samsung get all the praise even though they have flaws as well.
