Jorts Official I even told him how much I loved the way he played the role. At stage I told him how I never liked Marius(minus the book character) because I found him whiny. He automatically said in a whiny voice “whyyyyyy?!!!! All his friends just diiiieeeed!!!!” 😹 we couldn’t stop laughing and I was like “no! But like! The way you played it was just so real!”

Gotta say, I always knew Andy had done Marius, but always kinda thought "huh, that's an odd choice for his voice style", (and Andy himself said it was a difficult role for him - vocally) and have never seen anything he did in it... Yet, seeing this, he totally f**king NAILED IT. I always thought, out of him and Michael (his hubby), that Michael had the better "Broadway" voice... Yet, now having seen this... It's pretty damn close.

I'm a big fan of Les Miz since I was 10 years old. Now I'm 27, I have read the book a hundred times, and in the past 17 years I NEVER loved poor Marius. This story is about a great and epic things, like humanity, revolution, principles, etc, and there is Marius, who is in love with a pretty girl, and I was like: eww, seriously, it's so WEAK. Now I see this video, and I have to change my mind. This performance is so deep, and it hurts so much. Here is this small guy with a big soul and amazing voice, and breaks my heart completely. I can feel this character's pain, and learn to love him. Thanks Andy Mientus.

I was obsessed with Eponine as a kid.. I read all the long books and even studied French, hoping I could read the original. I wrote my own books inspired by Les Mis, especially Eponine, when I was 10 years old!! And I started taking voice lessons - and wrote my own songs too. Les Mis was my everything! But I never related to songs like this until now. I'm 39 and I've survived through hell.. and some of my friends haven't. The song now hits me right where it hurts. And his voice is so powerful.. I agree with you, he really makes me love Marius, who I always hated for the same reason. I thought it was so fucking lame that he loved Cosette and not Eponine. Why? Because Cosette is rich enough to curl her hair and wear dresses? Eponine is a badass and she actually knew who he was, but he chose the barbie girl. Lame.

The best of many many beautiful deliveries of this heartwrenching song. Andy 's is every bit as subtle as Eddie Redmayne's and as theatrical as Michael Ball or Rob Houchen's. If he moved you with this video, check out his Hard Candy Christmas on youtube which is ALMOST as moving as HRH Dolly Partons and would be equal to hers if anyone could ever equal her.

Katie O'Connor is this just Les Mis because... Newsies... Very very heavy new York accent...
@kateoconnor300306 жыл бұрын
Aiya Gilliam I’m saying that because this show takes place in France, the artistic directors probably made the decision on the movie for the actors to use British accents. That’s just this show though, every show is different. In the case of Newsies, a New York accent is required and it provides no language barrier.
@kl-14475 жыл бұрын
I mean if we want to be extremely critical, accent accuracy really flew out the window since they use British accents in the movie (I know that British accents are typically used as a substitute for most, but why?), which as you pointed out, takes place in France, so honestly, the accent thing shouldn't make a difference in the long run.
@milaroberts29615 жыл бұрын
british are probably something that was used because the original english performance was first done on the west end (london). when they started doing it in america, they probably wanted to emphasize that the musical is supposed to take place in a different country, but french is harder for most to do, and the original english recordings probably all already had english accents. on top of that, because the english lyrics are written for british people, a lot of the rhymes work better with english accents

@Torafaruga5 жыл бұрын

@kl-14475 жыл бұрын
I like both, but I saw the movie first so that influences my opinion. Eddie Redmayne might be my favorite Marius (I'm sorry Andy), the acting and singing and stuff in the movie really made him the stand out performance (again, sorry but I personally think they should have cast stronger singers for the 2 lead male roles). But Andy also gets this song, and makes it amazing. (I'm a fan from DWSA, which if you haven't seen go watch, Andy's Hanschen is my favorite). However, they are performing for very different audiences and situations so I think that's what makes the comparison a bit unfair for the acting. Andy in multiple interviews has said Marius has the most on stage time between his character and being ensamble. And Les Mis is 3 hours long and dark and very hard to perform, so belting this 11 o'clock number really takes a lot of effort (which Andy has also said many times). And he did it 8 times a week. Eddie was in front of a camera in a much calmer and relaxed atmosphere, and I'm assuming he did multiple takes (and live too), which obviously takes a lot of effort. But probably it was on only a few days to get the whole scene and also spaced out with other scenes in the movie as well, but not a full on 2.5 hours of acting straight (since this song is close to the last 1/2 hour in the show). Being in front of the camera means he has to focus more on the acting and emotion since it's so close, but he can do multiple takes if he messes up and is more rested than Broadway performers would be at this point. So anyways I'm sorry that was really long, but that's my take on it

This was good, but I think what would’ve been more effective is if when they blew out their candles, the light went out completely on them. That way it would’ve shown how quickly their lives were snuffed out and how they left Marius alone on the stage. How this is set up, you see everyone after they blew out their candles and you see them leaving the stage. Given how creative lighting has gotten on Broadway, I’m surprised it was so clunky and ineffective.

So I'm going to be honest - people in the comments are being a lot more charitable than they should be with this. This is really not a particularly good recording, and Andy is most definitely a better actor than he is a singer. Michael Ball from the original West End London cast really captured the character better than this or any other recording.
@rideoutsean2 жыл бұрын
This was a very good performance imo. He portrayed Marius from a vision far more unique than most to all others. His voice was good enough, but the acting alone very much compensated for it. This is also a bootleg, not a recording.
@juanlasthope38472 жыл бұрын
I gotta say I disagree with a lot of these comments. I thought this performance was absolutely terrible and devoid of all emotion. His voice was meh at best. I thought the choreography was stupid.
@rideoutsean2 жыл бұрын
This performance has arguably more emotion than literally all others. How do you look at his facial expressions and say 'devoid of all emotion'? He keeps a consistent angry/guilty tone & expression throughout the whole song. As for the choreography.. you may just be lost if you think it's stupid
