Andy Murray underwent hip surgery this past winter and now many people are wondering whether or not he can return to the tennis court.
What might have happened to cause Andy Murray to need surgery? How is this different from a regular total hip surgery and what are the chances he can return to the court?

I am a tennis player and a tennis fan, and I also sugested this topic about murrays injury, because even though it's not the most common one, when it happens, this injury tends to end the player's career, like it did to Guga Kuerten and Magnus Norman. Thanks for the vid doc! Tennis injuries are always welcome!

Having had one of the first resurfacings from McMinn himself (he was the major developer of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing) in 2001 (due to congenital dysplasia) , I returned to active martial arts (judo/jujutsu) and can vouch that it works great. No restrictions and I took up heavy weightlifting to boot post-op. As for metal, I routinely get tested and all of my bloodwork shows that the levels are within normal ranges. I also returned to McMinn to get a Birmingham Knee Replacement in 2015 (I blew out left my knee in 1980 and got one of the earliest ACL repairs, so it was high time for new knee) and still, all of my numbers of excellent. I would state up front that surgical ability is the deciding factor in a return to high-end athletics. In the case of McMinn, he has very detailed checklists for placement and other quality assurance, plus he is just a fantastic workman. I am getting ready for having the other hip resurfaced now. This bring me to the reason for this post. The injury to the knee has accelerated the wear and tear of every other joint on the opposite side (right. ankle, knee and shoulder issues) as well as the hip. This is what playing hard even after a successful bit of orthopedic surgery does. This is because the left knee after the ACL rebuild was a tiny bit off. The hip resurfacing, however, was most excellent and actually fixed several growing issues I was having.

I had had left hip done in 2011 at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC by Dr Edwin Su. He studied with McGinn and has done over 2000 Birmingham Hip replacements(Smith & Nephew). In 2020 I had my right hip resurfaced by Dr Su as well. Both are Perfect

great video Now we know he is back playing tennis. He will need to periodise his progress careful so that the joint becomes adapted to the effort and loads. If he starts going deep in every tournament, playing a lot of heavy matches too soon that could cause trouble Needs to pick and choose his events, training really well in between and recover fully

If you are interested on covering other Tennis Players injuries, you can talk about Juan Martin Del Potro's recent Patella fracture. He had a surgery on past October and He is recovering from that. Tried a comeback on February but it seems He is still suffering pain and He is anaylizing a second surgery. Prior to this, Del Potro had 3 surgeries on his left wrist (a VERY complex case). I think you have and interesting topic to talk about with the 2 injuries there. Keep the videos coming. You are doing a great job here!

It depends on the experience of the surgeon and the brand. In 2008 there was a international recall of the ASR of dePuy these implants where very bad developed so they took them out of the market. But they also tried to take the BHR Birmingham of the market (these were the best and had no problems) unfortunately some countries they quit resurfacing and thinking all of the brands of resurfacing are the same. (some countries you need a very strict qualification being a resurfacing surgian :more than 15 years of experience in total hip replacement and at least 50 resurfacing surgerys joining a year) Anyway... There is now something new the H1.. A ceramic hip resurfacing, so there will be no metal icons any more... (it's gonna be a to long story)..I know many martial artists with resurfacing and they doing amazing great even JCVD has resurfacing (the best surgians in the world are in Belgium Dr. Koen de smet in the UK. Dr. Derek mcminn and in New York Dr. Edward su) So... Ok.. Good video and thank you very much..

Old comment but if you love your sport it’s worth a shot. Continuing to try conservative methods can result in ongoing cartilage damage. Recovery is very rough, Andy is actually more of a worst case scenario where you have the bone shaving done but never really get back to pain free, hence the resurfacing as a second operation. Wish anything going though this ALL the luck, it sucks big time

I recently watched your video re Andy Murray's hip surgery (resurfacing) dated 3/13/2019. Years ago, there was another tennis player who was essentially a clay court specialist, but he had all the tools to become one of the greats (including being relatively tall, lanky and flexible). His name was Gustavo Kuertin (nickname "Gūga"). Unfortunately, after he underwent 'hip surgery', he never returned to high level competition. I don't know the nature of his injury or the ensuing procedure. I wonder if the technology or procedure was not sufficiently developed or known at that time, or whether his injury was too severe?

I'm 52 year old performance cyclist, have been for years, racing, time trials, train like there's no tomorrow. I had to give up racing and time trials due to my hips. I have impingement which has been operated on three times and now have holes in my cartilages. I'm currently waiting to have my hips replaced. Was on a trial for ceramic resurfacing which was suspended so now back waiting for full replacement. When I discussed my active sport with the surgeon he said that he no longer did metal on metal resurfacing due to the blood contamination complications. Told me that he was routinely removing his previous metal on metal surfacing even if the joint was okay due to the blood contamination issue. Said it was a big problem and only a few surgeons in the UK now do metal on metal surfacing because of this reason. This is why I was shocked to learn that Murray opted for metal on metal. I think the US have a more liberal approach to metal on metal, that or the UK health service have over reacted to the contamination issue. Ideally I'd love to have resurfacing but from what I have learned the risk is high. I'm in a state of puzzlement at the moment with conflicting advice.

I wanted to share with you my search for my repetitive movement injury of my left hip. I was an active cyclist and play many other sports. I read you comment and wanted you to see a KZfaq of Dr. Pritchett in Seattle and how he does his resurfacing and the components that he uses. In his video he uses a titanium femoral cap made of titanium coated with Ceramic and the Pelvic Cap is a metal cap with a polyethylene insert that the femoral cap will ride against. He goes into more detail about his prosthetics in the video. Here is the video link for you to look at and he has some other videos that you might want to check out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNOoqcRjr5_Sgac.html&feature=share This is the route that I will be taking because I want the natural movement of my hip so that I can participate in the sports I love. Good Luck to you in your search for your hip health. You have alternatives to get around the metal on metal resurfacing. Cheers!!!

You made some good points. However you did not include, that a hip surface replacement will need a much larger acetabular cup. So yes, you safe so,e bone on the femur side, however you loose more on the acetabular side. You already mentioned that Metal on Metal joints will release metallic ions into the body, which you will find the blood and organs. Those patients interestingly suffer from neurological symptoms quite often. In such a case you would end up in the need to exchange the surface replacement after quite a short time. So in the end the patient will end up with bone loss on both the femur and the pelvis. There a short stems which safe a good part of the femoral neck, without the need of cutting a 60+ mm hole into the pelvis. This should always be considered, when a THA is planned.

So end conclusion of whether Murray can return to top level is we just don’t know because no one has ever done it before. This isn’t like Bob Bryan who had the same operation and returned to doubles. If Andy has lost the same movement in his hip and the explosiveness he won’t get back to the same level he was before. And unlike Bob, the he needs to cover the full court. Long term, I read from another leading hip surgeon on BBC that at best Andy risks more injury and at worst he risks long term arthritis in his hip. He could probably return to play the sport, but would he be happy to just be a journeyman he wins the odd match, if that. Andy says he will know in his mind for certain 8-9 months post surgery, so by Shanghai Masters. Maybe he changes his mind about Doubles just to play one last time at Wimbledon next year?

Though Hip resurfacing or partial hip replacement is good for young patient who has hip impingement problem but hip resurfacing has avg. 10 years life and THR has 10-15 years, with ceramic on ceramic or ceramic on poly it gives good life 20-25 years acc. To literature there are exceptional cases who enjoyed their THR more than 25 years.
