When I saw this episode I just had to post this from 1967 S3 E21 Opie and the spoiled kid. I think we need more of the old fashioned wood sheds out back. The crazy thing about this video is that. Same situation today and the kid would win this one. crazy how times have changed.

@@billfulgenzi2287 Mr. Fulgenzi DK HEAD, in this case, comparing Arnold's behavior to trump is more than appropriate whether you like it or not. For your information, I am not the one throwing a temper tantrum; trump is, and I pray you are not supporting him and his tantrum; also, my opinion was not meant to be political I just saw the similarity in behavior. Absolutely, Like Andy said: If we don't teach children to live in society today, what's gonna happen to them when they grow up? These parents in this day & age no matter how young or old they are if they're 1st timers or already parenting experts that don't EVER teach their child / children no matter how young they are any DEEPER Discipline, Respect, Properly Mannered, Patience & other things in life they need to be taught all of it little bits at a time, 1 day at a time, make better & smarter life choices a day at a time & live in society no matter if it's Good or Bad, you wouldn't figure what's gonna happen to these kids if they are not taught properly or the very disturbing part is NOT teaching these kids at all when they grow up like right now in this day & age when parents doing something they are not supposed to be doing that is setting an EXTREMELY BAD example to their children no matter how young they are where these kids & their young days go by would potentially follow in their parent's footsteps in becoming violent in their futures which that should not happen when their child / children get in trouble with the law that would have their Jail / Prison cells with their names on them if these parents don't parent their own kids at these early stages of their lives like right now, but Oh No!!!! these parents have WAY MORE important things to do than not put the foot down properly on their child / children's actions & their safety. If they can't do that, then what's the point of having kids in the 1st place. These parents in this day & age need to take a DEEPLY HARD look at themselves in the Mirror & think about all the major challenges & major consequences they are facing when themselves & their partners agreed on bringing a child / children in their lives & in this world.

The Washington post did an article a couple years ago where they directly blamed the Andy Griffith Show for Trump getting elected. Their logic was that white America wanted their lives to be like the show. Kinda weird seeing how those same whites voted twice for a black man. Most of the big liberal media outlets have done articles on how racist this show was, and it is all absurd. It is kinda like the leftist that tried to get Friends removed from Netflix, cause they claimed it was hateful towards gays and trans and was too masculine. The episode they used to prove their crazy point was the episode where Ross and Rachel were hiring a nanny. Yes this was literally a story a couple years ago in all the major media outlets, people were demanding Friends be removed. The left is crazy.

I am so sick of it already. Before long no one will want to be an officer. Why ? So they can get fired or possibly charged for doing the right thing- he's not the bionic man, he couldnt get to them fast enough to try and grab knife and possibly get stabbed also. He did what he could to save the life of a victim. What the heck is wrong with world 😪😪😪😪😪 I'm a person of color- non- caucasian. Not all police are bad, not all teachers are bad, not all doctors, attorneys, wait staff, cooks, pilots, customer service,etc- yes there are bad people in various occupations, but I believe there are more good. In this case the police officer did what many would have done- he saved a life

We do need more shows like this they were family oriented with love, caring for our fellow man, being loving and kind, thoughtful. These were decent, right and upstanding. All of us "old timers" want to do the same thing to that little brat (woodshed!). Now, let's recognize the really great acting by that young actor to sell that part so well. If I recall correctly, the stage hands or whomever else was on set that day all gave him a standing ovation for his portrayal throughout. Shoot, even Opie realized he was "one of his own kind!" There was a great article from 2016 in the Mount Airy News that interviewed the spoiled brat kid (Ronnie Dapo). From the article: "In “Opie and the Spoiled Kid,” Dapo’s character Winkler throws a world class hissy fit to compel the sheriff to release his $75 bike from the impound. The directors gave Dapo a few takes to really work himself up. “They’d say, just give us a little bit more,” he said. By the third take he was pretty much screaming, he said. When the director yelled cut, he thought they might go again. Instead, “The whole place stood up and applauded me,” he said. “Parts like that were great.”'

I emphasize with being the oldest. I had 4 younger brothers with the same 'lessons by proxy' my brothers received. I had the opportunity to ask my father about this when I finally had kids (2) and my father mentioned "Well, it was easier to punish me than figure out who broke the window". That truly inspired me to stop at 2 kids. Don't let the children outnumber the parents. I still feel many things at age 65: A little resentment for that bias but much stronger as it built my character to be more responsible for my actions. Can't fix the past, just learn from it.

This episode exemplifies truth to the highest degree. I think that parents need to teach their children right from wrong at an early age and set consequences for doing things that are wrong. It is the primary effective method from keeping children from ending up in juvenile hall, jail or prison. I think that child rearing carries a number of responsibilities and proper discipline is just one of those responsibilities.

To me, Andy was nothing short of a coach. He flat never enabled poor behavior, expected the best and law-abiding out of you, consistently never wavered, and doled out the consequences when/as necessary. That's what kids truly need and want because they're growing and need a consistent behavioral model via regular discipline and limits. Without that, they have nowhere to go and test what they can get away with.

I'm not saying one was better than the other, but Lucas was raising a teenager and those are the years a boy really needs a father. I learned a lot from watching The Rifleman and Chuck Conners delivered the message perfectly. The only other tv show that had a widowed father raising a son was The Courtship Of Eddie's Father. Bill Bixby also played a great Dad. Brandon Cruz who played Eddie always kept in touch with Bixby. And Ron Howard and Johnny kept in touch with their tv Dad's also.

@@nasedo3129 Watching Walton's reruns I was impressed with John Walton's fathering too. That was the 70's though but it portrayed an earlier era when father's still fathered.

Loved this show as a kid, am 65 and still watch it. Where i get my haircut it's on all the time. Kids should pay more attention to it.

0:51. You can just see Opie thinking, "wow, this kid is a douchebag.' Okay, Opie probably doesn't know the word 'douchebag,' but if he did he would definitely be thinking it.

@Liberty AboveAllElse yeah, I replayed the scene. It’s quiet, but he definitely says “shut up douchebag”.

He was shocked. Saw the ugly truth in being a brat. Its not attractive. Parents, you're not doing your kids a favor by not disciplining your children. Rules will be everywhere in our life. Even and especially as an adult. So what if life isn't fair. Grow up....

I lived in fear of the good 'ol woodshed. And the wooden paddle my mother wielded. Both were seldom used but served as a great deterrent!

Every home should come with a woodshed. In urban areas, there should be community woodsheds available to families.

Not on the subject of discipline but I think it bears saying that the bratty kid's line delivery at 2:38 is solid as all get out. The hammer of the fist on the table is done with great timing and emphasis, and the subtle transition from tantrum to sobs is well executed. That actor played it well. I really believed he cared more about his bike than his dad.

2:17 I bet not too many people who watched this show on its first run realized they were looking at one of the finest film directors of his generation.
