This is how you write a dedicated love song without sounding smarmy or cloyingly sweet. Give it utter musical class while telling the other person what they've meant to your life. A+ is correct.

Gosh. We had such different experiences with music. Thinking about all those bands that filled the airwaves in the late '70's is just making me depressed. I guess there is a reason they were big hits and my buddies and I felt like outsiders in the culture.

Unfortunately for his family and the entire music world, we lost Gerry Rafferty in 2010 after a long battle with the bottle. Mr. Rafferty could never really adapt well to the juxtaposition of being a singer/songwriter of note and the celebrity the music world wanted him to be. RIP, Gerry. I believe your beautiful songs are lifting the angels above.

Steve Cabrera I'm Irish on both sides of my family. The name Rafferty is hands down one of the most 'Irish' names there is. I am 76 years old and attended my first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting 52 years ago this coming April. I was 24 years old at the time, and knew I needed to be there. The disease of alcoholism is a reality - not a habit, not an idea, not a concept. This disease is recognized as such by the AMA and other health related professional societies and associations. Some ethnic groups seem to have a genetic predisposition for it. Gerry Rafferty was aware of everything I'm sharing, but for whatever reason he lost his personal 'struggle' with a very cunning, baffling and powerful malady. In my own case I battled the bottle for many years with 'on and off' sobriety - even relapsing after 11 straight years without a drink! Coming up soon I will, by God's grace and the Fellowship of AA, celebrate 21 years of continuous sobriety. Never do I take for granted a single day of my recovery because I never want to return to the suffering of active addiction, It is also possible that by sharing a little of my 'story' with others some person may find his or her way into the 'rooms'.
@no2all
@no2all 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaycorby Congratulations on your sobriety and I wish you well in your quest to keep it that way. I hope that you can find the strength and support you need for at least another few decades so that you may relate your story to help and inspire others. BTW, Gerry Rafferty was Scottish, but I understand there was a lot shared between the two over the centuries as the ferry between the two is a short two hours.

@@no2all Thank you, Steve. I have sponsored a fair number of men over the past 20 years; some are still sober, others haven't been as fortunate. I take no credit for either. Yes, Gerry was a native of Scotland but I'm guessing from whomever he gets his surname was Irish. I have read peer reviewed studies that establish the genetic link between alcoholism the disease, and people whose ancestors inhabited that cold northern tier of the world going back to the Ice Ages: included are Scandinavians ( Danes, Swedes, Norwegians ), Russians, Irish, Scots etc. Without going into detail, there seems to be causation between the extreme cold and the ingestion of large amounts of ethanol ( drinkable alcohol ) to stay warm. This behavior continued over such a long period of time that it became a genetic trait among the descendants of the original 'tipplers', and was carried along over time even after the earth warmed up in the post glacial periods..

Gerry has left us a legacy of wonderful music. SO talented. Belongs in the HOF. He appeals to your soul. One of the most underrated Singer/Songwriters of ALL time. He was a private person who excelled. His life is in his music. There are 2 HEROES to come out of Scotland-William Wallace(Braveheart), and Gerry. They dedicated a Blvd. to his memory-Gerry Rafferty Boulevard. A troubled soul, he left us far too soon on 1/4/11. A gentle soul, he was SO overwhelmed by his biggest hit Baker Street. The pressure was too much for him and according to his daughter, that's when he started drinking heavily leading to his demise from alcoholism and depression. He never toured here. He was his own man, and often clashed with the big business record companies. He gave up millions to do it his way. A TRUE artist, he did not think the huge arenas were good for his music, and that's what it was all about for him-the music. Check out Night Owl(my fav.), The Royal Mile, Get It Right Next Time, The Light of Love, Home and Dry.

Thank you for showcasing this one. My husband and I have been married for 41yrs. and he wrote the lyrics to this song down with an anniversary card a long time ago. He said he couldn’t say how he felt about me and us any better than this. It’s been “our” song ever since!

Yeah, this is one of those songs that was always playing in the background while I was studying or doing homework. In fact, I distinctly remember preparing an excellent little cheat sheet for a chemistry exam while listening to this! I aced that test! I've never sought out this song since, but thanks for the 'A' I guess.

I love this whole album! It's phenominal. I drove across country (L.I., NY to CA) on three days notice when I was 21. I was going for 2 weeks to hang out with one of my best friends. I stayed for a year. On the red eye from LA I had songs from this album in my head the whole trip.

Love this song. In 1972 Gerry Rafferty was in the Scottish folk rock band Stealers Wheel & had a big hit with "Stuck In The Middle With You" & "Star". Later on, he went out on his own & then had the big hits "Baker's Street", "Right Down The Line" & "Night Owl".

Love this track because it's such an understated love song. In so many love songs it's like they're trying to prove to us how much they love the girl and it gets corny, but here, its almost like fate warmly accepted.

I got a chuckle watching both of you, eyes closed, get swept away within the first 5 seconds of Gerry Rafferty's vocal entry. His music pacifies the heart with a voice that's simply hypnotic. I'm joining the previous reviewer Steve's acknowledgement of this artist's all-too-early departure from our world. He fought an overwhelming battle with addiction. The light that dwells in his songs is in such stark contrast with the darkness he must have felt. So sad that the healing he brought to world was beyond his reach in any lasting way.

Gerry Rafferty was a master of songwriting. Theres not an album of his that doesnt include songs that either were classics or through album-centric streaming have become classics. Whatevers Written in Your Heart is a beautifully sad tearjerker of a song, but he also has the funky upbeat Get It Right Next Time. There was even a Knopfler song Gerry sang on that was released in Europe but I dont think ever made it to America.

Totally agree on all the points folk have made on the City to City era of Gerry. Mary Skeffington, a song about his mother, from his earlier solo career is simply wonderful. I was lucky enough to be at the tribute concert in Glasgow after he passed. An incredibly emotional night. Delighted to see your discovery of the great man
