Have you wondered why you didn’t get hired even though you were perfect for the job?
Mistake Alert
Most people think they get hired because of their qualifications. In doing so, they expend so much energy in the interview focusing on their experience before they know which parts of their experience and qualifications the employer is most interested in. At this point, you must be thinking whaaaaaa?
The Obvious
You are in a job interview of some kind. The employer, through its action of spending time to speak with you, thinks you’re qualified-on paper.
The Not-So-Obvious
You actually get a job interview because of your qualifications. You get the job for three reasons, none of which are your qualifications.
Why Do You Get the Job?
Based on my observation from thousands of interviews between my clients (the hiring companies) and job candidates (prospective employees), I've concluded a candidate's attainment of the job is largely contingent on three often-undetectable success factors:
• The candidate's ability to effectively articulate his or her qualifications and potential contributions (encoding)
• The interviewer's ability to accurately interpret the candidate's qualifications (decoding)
• The interviewer's capacity to remember the candidate (memory)
It all comes down to your ability to communicate how your qualifications match what the employer needs.
The 3-Step Fix
1. Keep the three reasons why you get hired in mind. Awareness and consciousness (of these issues) is key to success. Of course, general consciousness is too. ☺
2. When asked an interview question, don’t rush to share your awesomeness unless you know which part of your awesomeness the interviewer and employer needs to know. (That is, it doesn’t matter if you’re fantastic. You need to connect the dots for the employer how your fabulousness matches what it needs!) Sometimes the job interviewer’s question is specific and he or she identifies clearly what’s needed. Other times, the interviewer is vague. Make sure to look before you leap.
3. Ask a clarifying question (if need be) to zone in on exactly what information the interviewer needs to know to determine whether you are a great fit. This is especially helpful in the wake of the dreaded and horribly ineffective, “Please tell me about yourself,” question. (See Bonus Section for more.)

What I struggle with in my interviews is that I am afraid of the interviewers. Even before the interview starts, I already assume that the knowledge / skills / experiences of interviewers are higher than me, and I feel as if I am a student who is questioned by a teacher. It is therefore difficult for me to answer the question calmly, I only try to find answer which I think the interviews would like.

Hey there, just come across this video and find it really true. Recently, I got an interview with such a big company. First, I thought it's going well and I was very excited and happy because the first interview was great. When i was called for the final interview I prepared and everything seemed good. At the day of the interview I was so confused and didn't get hired after that!! I really don't know what was wrong because even the person who interviewed me was nice and we had a great conversation. Can you please explain to me this?

I think the most frustrating part of the interview process is telling someone that they will get back to you when they know they won’t. I’d rather you just reject me instead of having me play the waiting game. To be completely honest as soon as an interviewer says “if you get the job” or HR will contact you by X amount of days.. I know I didn’t get the job.

Absolutely. Every interview I had where I didn’t get the job the person told me the same exact thing. It’s so frustrating and very passive aggressive. It’s unfortunate people that are in certain positions have no means being there. They will get their karma one way or another.

Absolutely 😔 I just got turned down after 6 interviews, last one 2 weeks ago where they said "we will let you know extremely soon" then ghosted me for 2 weeks just to deny me. Just fucking say that I didn't get it and quit wasting people's time and effort so we can find a job that would actually want us.

@@rouij.9208 I find most women "over thinking" about the suitability of the candidate and whether or not they"fit" within the team. Men just think "can this person do the job" . Not only that duting my experiences in interviews ONLY women highlight to me that l am OVER QUALIFIED, men treat an over qualified person as an "bargain " or "an opportunity".

Honestly . After 16 interviews for the same position, I have found that this system of interviewing is completely flawed. I have started my own business recently and hopefully it’ll turn out fine. I can not take any more rejection; I refuse to let other who don’t even know me at all judge me any further. That is essentially what interviews are.. how can you truly determine whether you like someone or not based off a 20- 30 minute Interview?

The number one reason why you weren't hired is because it was a fake interview and the company already knows who they want to hire. They only interviewed you because they need to follow company's policy, which usually states they must interview 3 or more candidates before they can hire someone.

Have interviewed and hired many people over the past 40 working years of my career. Have also been interviewed and hired many times within the same company. There is no set formula to follow when being interviewed. Some people are really good at presenting themselves in such a way that makes the interviewer comfortable in hiring them. I know this sounds backwards but its true. Good employers have the ability to imagine how the person they are interviewing may play out over time. It takes lots of experience and extremely good intuition to do this and unfortunately it is not always 100%. Can tell very quickly when someone has been coached. They use all the buzz words and at times take on a mechanical feel. Just be yourself. Be sincere and don’t try to game the interviewer. Good employers are listening for things that signifies that the applicant will: 1) be to work on time, 2) give an honest days work, 3) take initiative and learn the job to the best of their ability, 3) care about their job and their co-workers and 3) have a good attitude even when things don’t go their way...

I watched this video before an interview at Wells Fargo. I followed it exactly by efectively communicating my qualifications and how they applied to the job. I also asked very specific questions regarding the department I'd be working in. The interview ended with the manager saying I had great energy and I was offered the position.☺

I always called it the “lunch rule”. All other things being equal employment/promotions go to the person that the employer would most like to go to lunch with, qualifications and work ethic is nearly always secondary to like ability and aesthetics.

After 3 years of 400 applications and over 50 interviews I can say that: 1. My country is corrupt. All jobs go to siblings and friends. Including hard phisical jobs. 2. HR calls you because they need to justify their salary not because you have potential. 3. Looks are very important. More than experience. 4. Most of them make you do different unpayed tasks and they use your stuff. 5. Most of them want you to have between 20 and 30 years old, 5 years of experience and to make different jobs all in one. This is reality.

Yep. And once you're over a certain age range, they interview you to pretend to be polite but they already have their preferences. As I have noticed it's not as much about your skills even though they claim it is, it's about who you know on the inside that can vouch for you as a worker bee. It's stupid and very corrupt.

I recently went to an interview and I knew from the first second that the man was not going to hire me. A week later, a younger friend who barely spoke English and had almost no experience had the job. She left work after a week, she didn't like it. We will see what will happen now with all those people entering through the border who can be paid less.

This is a great video with some great tips. However I’d like to add that interviews are statistically the most unreliable methods for selecting candidates. The reason being is that so many interviewers are not professionally trained in how to ask the right questions. Ultimately they end up making decisions based upon non-job relevant information. I’m sure we all have horror stories about somebody who got a job when they shouldn’t have, or didn’t get a job even though they are qualified. That’s because interviews aren’t necessary looking for the best qualified candidate. Even though theoretically that is the purpose of an interview. In all practicality interviews are designed to identify The person that best fits the culture of the business or hiring manager. As a result a lot of personal preference gets thrown into the mix. All of us communicate differently and receive information differently. That ultimately leads to a gap in what you’re trying to communicate and what do the interviewer is hearing. I do believe this video is great and if you happen to find an interviewer who is trained to think professionally about their responsibility in making hiring decisions in this video is a great guide. My recommendations are more for organizations. Stop conducting interviews unless you are a trained professional with experience.

Justin McNally Very well said!!! I completely agree that companies aren’t too savvy on making hiring decisions. Those decisions are purely subjective. Bottom line is they attempt to find someone who is the best fit for their culture (aka personality) and not so much qualifications especially in a team-driven environment.

Best way to get hired is start your own business. Otherwise, you're facing nepotism, internal candidates, and luck. Sometimes you interview and lost before you even got started. Start your own business that makes money, or be the person who gets selected before the interview. I knew someone and now I work with a major U.S. airline.

It's honestly all about luck. I know someone who was not qualified for a job but he only got it because he was funny and the hiring managers thought he would be "great" to have round the office.

I lost a job interview because I rushed the questions by the panel. I wasn’t quite sure whether to answer quickly to save time. Although I had the right answers. I believed the rush cost me the job. Very disappointed. I had tested, and tested and tested through the application process just to get to the panel interview and blow it. So I agree. Pause. Take your time when asked questions on the interview.

I once asked the hiring managers why they chose one guy over the other after the interview. They said because the one they hired is a friendly and outgoing extrovert while the other one isn’t. Employers know everyone they ask to interview are qualified, so they now want to find someone who isn’t going to be confrontation or unfriendly.

Often, prior to the interview, employer already knew who they are going to hire, or not hiring anyone at all. That’s all for why you are not hired after the interview. Unless, you are the one who they knew they are going to hire, of course. (In that case, you probably know it yourself, too). Employers are too privileged. They don’t have to hire from interviews if they don’t feel like to. They don’t have to explain themselves.

Hi everyone! I would simplify everything to one simple point. As one of the comments below says: "There are no jobs!". The competition is so strong that it's very unlikely you'll even get a response to your application no matter what. Use your connections to get a job. That's my advise. Because, if the employer doesn't find anyone suitable within the company and their social circle only then they post the job, after which they receive over a hundred of applications, and there's always at least one desperate person who even exeeds their requirements. It's like winning a lottery. Good luck everybody! Take care!

With all my respect to you, I find the advice you give are generic. People do everything during interviews and answer all questions but still rejected. I think the issue is with the interviewers. These interviewers have preferences which we don't know.

So many interviewers are very short-sighted and fail to acknowledge that an interview is not the best way to learn about a candidate. Many individuals do not perform well at interviews yet are excellent once in the, indeed any, role.

Like yourself, I've been involved in a gazillion interviews. IMO it comes down to the following: does the interviewer see you in themselves? That's it. I tell candidates the research before an on-site interview is the most important thing they can do. Find out everything possible about the team members interviewing you. Read their LinkedIn. Find their Facebook page. Look for them on Twitter. Really get a sense of who they are. Mimic their written vocabulary into the interview conversation. If there are pictures of the interview team members available, pay attention to how they dress. When you're meeting with them, mimic their body gestures. Sit like they do. Increase or decrease the rate of your speech to match theirs. The more you resemble them, the more they are likely to pick you. I've seen this work many many times. Familiarity breeds confidence and reduces doubt.

I got interviewed by phone for Olympus, for an Engineering position. They never called me for a second interview. I didn’t know how to answer the last question about my salary expectations. I gave a direct number. I saw your video after the interview about that. I really was interested. So I wrote the guy an email telling him that I would like to continue with the interview process but he answered that he has no updates yet. That was 3 weeks ago. The interview processes in general is just so stupid! And just a huge waste of time. I wish it was a bit different.

Treat it as you're interviewing the employer. Get them to run through the scenarios, ask them about there's elves and what they think about the company. There are many jobs in life, try to pick one you enjoy and can let you live the life you want.

Speaking about being called for interview because of your qualifications, what I REALLY HATE is being told: "I think you're overqualified for the role"...can't think of a bigger insult given that I've accepted the invitation to interview, go through the effort of getting dressed and prepared for the interview, not to mention the cost of travelling and giving up your time...absolutely insulting...

Employers preach about professionalism but then ghost rejected candidates or provide the same cookie-cutter email with no feedback. Unprofessional... A few extra minutes of feedback as a societal norm would enhance the employment process tremendously.

I get hired easily. All the time. Never been unemployed more than a month. But, I’ve also never had a “good” job. Only had benefits once and that job actually sucked. Never gotten a job based on an online app, never gotten a job based on a group interview, never gotten a job when the interviewer asked generic “interview questions” off of a piece of paper. I almost always get hired when a real person asks me real questions that relate to the job. If they give me generic bull about my leadership style or my strengths and weaknesses... I can tell instantly they are not hiring me. Usually vague and pointless questions mean they’ve chosen another candidate already and your interview is just happening because it was too late to cancel.

In Massachusetts I worked as an Administrative Assistant for almost 25 years. 12 of those years as Legal Assistant in two different law firm. I was always lucky landing a job. Second interview and then hired for the job. Now I live in Florida and the number one reason I don't get hired at a law firm is because I don't drive. They tell me I qualified for the job. I have the skills, the experience, the professionalism, and presentation of a law firm. But they need someone with a driver's license and reliable transportation.

I use the "Tell me about yourself" question as an opener to get them speaking while I read over their resume. Basically I use it as a gateway to more specific questions.

I remember going to an interview where the interviewer was the one late. It turned out a few years later, my brother applied for the same job, and the same interviewer was late. Idk if it's some kind of test he puts on the interviewees but it is highly unprofessional. Do you really want to work for someone so unprofessional or would you rather be patient and find a job where people are professional? Food for thought.

I am one of those people who are bad at interviews but when I get lucky enough to get a job they tend to like my work that they would give me a raise. Yeah. Interviews aren't exactly everything. I know some people who got hired just cause they have a likable personality but don't meet the qualifications. They are one of those favorites who get away with everything.

Andrew I have a question for you. I have been interviewing a lot lately. I do think getting a job now is more difficult then when I started my professional career. I did follow your format of what a resume should look like. It was like the flood gates open . I was getting many calls for interviews. I went on the ones I thought was practical for me. When I say practical I mean getting to work would be an issue (commute). Do you think that many employers go through temporary agencies? I have been going through many recruiters lately. I think that some of them have a number of people they have to introduce to an employer. The recruiters I have encountered are rude . One recruiter said that I can call them if I have questions about the position or general questions. When I tried to call on several occasions but was not able to reach them. I gave up and said I don't think I want to work for that company if that is the way they would treat someone looking for a job. Let me know your thoughts.

So this is the email I received today after a recent interview with a local museum: Thank you very much for coming to the interview. I am afraid your application was not successful. Choosing the successful candidate was extremely difficult, because we interviewed five excellent candidates and could have appointed any one of you. In fact you came second to the person appointed, I am afraid! So, while this will be disappointing, please be assured that you gave an excellent interview, produced a very good written piece, and scored very highly. We would be happy to provide any further feedback should you want it, but we don’t think there is really anything we can add or any pointers we can give to help you improve your CV or interview technique. Life sucks right now and it is raining outside :(

What dose it mean when a refferal (a person you know whom reffered you to the job) says the manager hasn't made a decsion like AT ALL about whether they'll hire you or any other applicants? Like it's been two months since I turned in the application. Mind you this is at a banquet. I have applied other places and I have had four interviews at different restaurants but no luck!

This guy is a recruiter and most of his advice is tailored to executives, not working class people who get dragged along through three interviews just to work at the convenience store. Best general advice I’ve heard is don’t ever approach a potential job as if they’re doing you a favor, they’re looking for a ‘hot ticket’.

Well you mentioned if a person is invited to an interview, he/she already has the background/qualification to do the job. But then if a qualified person has to watch "behind the scene" videos like this channel (no offence, I do appreciate the tips) to nail a job interview, then isn't the interviewer doing a bad job at recruiting? I mean, if I am a professional accountant, it should be obvious from my certs and qualifications that my expertise lies in accounting, not tackling interview questions. As an accounting professional, it doesn't matter what the company throws at me, as long as it is accounting stuff, I can handle. That's covered in the Certified Public Accountant training. "Certified" means I am certified to fit the role, unless the advertised job duties are fake. It's like buying a new Display Card for your PC. You read the hardware specs, it suits what you need, you buy it and plug it in your computer and it will work. That's what qualified means, or what it's supposed to mean.

Here is my angle that may potentially answer your underlying question: why aren't qualifications alone good enough to get you the job? Because I need to see with my own eyes and ears that those qualifications built you up. It is not just a given that a degree and CPA means you know as much as said piece of paper claims you do. For example, think about any time you have heard of someone going to the doctor (a profession in which a great deal of study and certificates is required) and said out loud, "They didn't know what the hell they were doing or saying!" Because that is possible. Say YOU were a hiring manager looking for an accountant to balance the books with all your experience who, when you talk to them about what debits and credits can mean in a given scenario, they have the complete opposite and wrong understanding of what they are. Point is, as I said before, that the fact you graduated from this school under this program does not for sure mean you understand what they want you to understand to the interviewer. Maybe your college professors were lazy, incompetent, or completely stupid? Maybe you bribed your way through your classes, hiring someone else to do your homework and provide you the test bank for an exam you are about to take. Or you always got the answers from people who just took the test. These are worst case scenarios, but they are possible ones. So essentially, when your interviewer in any way, shape, or form asks you to talk about your skills, you better convince them through your ability to speak you have them. No, as an accountant, that is not what you were trained in, but I don't think you need me to tell you effective communication is a valuable job skill anywhere you work.

I've had at least 2 interviews which I TOTALLY aced, I knew I did, stil didn't get the job, often in these cases it how the interviewer FEELS about you or they already have somone or... there is a toss up between you and another and they CAN'T quantify why they are better, you get the old "it was really close but the other candidate had the edge"

@@dtrudelle l know of someone who dumbed his CV at got the Job he was overqualified for. However 6 weeks later he saw a job that suited his skills and qualification level. He applied for it highlighting his Master degree, which was "omitted" from his "original" CV. Unfortunately he didn't get the new job and adding to that HR informed his Line Manager of this "new information" . From this the Line Manager dismissed him from his post since it is still in his probationary period and the term states about "....any falsification on the application would end up with a dismissal".

My phone interview went really well, the recruiter was excited and said I would definitely be called for an interview. They never called, I called them they cut me off with we went with someone else. . I believe someone in my history caused this, thirty great references including a twenty year history with the company and one person spoke about our history. I believe that with my whole heart. I have been a senior executive for many years up to CEO at the international level. Often , the decision, if hired or not depends on the interviewers state of mind. Good mood , bad mood. Important for any candiate, be able to read the state of mind of the interviewer and than adapt to his or her mood. Interviewing is not an easy job and after 3 interviews in a row it will influence the interviewers judgement. Andrew is right, the breakdown often happens due to a communicational disconnect. Another very important aspect is chemistry. If the chemistry is not right or the interviewer has a bad day, it will be a challenge to finish the interview successfully. But it is possible.

Basically, you perfect a script and stick to it in every interview. It's all about making a copy/paste perfect interview script. Even if it's not really true for you- you just have to tell them EXACTLY what they want to hear. This is how BROKEN our hiring process is.

I had a hard time getting job offers because of lack of experience. I want to be a Medical Laboratory Technician and I have my degree and my certification and went through 9 interviews and got rejected for job offers. At my last interview they said I need more experience, but the lab I work at now offered me a different position so I can get experience. My advice for people who are going through the same thing are to try finding an internship or find an entry level position that you can get into before you can have the position you want.
