Also watch Asimo dance at minute 9:00!!!
Asimo packed the Honda area for every single demo at the USA Science and Engineering Festival 2018.
This is the new and improved robot and it certainly showed!
It danced, climbed the stairs and even ran across the stage.
The Honda Robotics team did an amazing job building it but also presenting it to the spectators.
Cannot get enough of the show and are happy to share this clip with you! Enjoy Asimo at his best!

Growing up in the 90s, I was a huge fan of Honda's robots, and I remember their robots looking more and more different and more advanced with each new incarnation over the span of half a decade, then came Asimo in 2000. I was psyched. I wondered where it'd go next. Then came Gen 2 Asimo in 2005, but since then, besides tweaks, adjustments and very subtle upgrades, you have to admit that there doesn't seem to have been any major groundbreaking developments since then. It's like Honda's reached the end of the road with Asimo. *EDIT* I also just learned at the last minute that Honda retired Asimo just a few months after this demonstration, and may be focusing on a whole new model. I really wonder where they'll go with it next.

Asimo doesn't have rolling hips so it can't swing it's body over it's supporting legs like a human. therefore it has to have a short gait like a chimpanzee. Hence walking around looking like it just crapped itself.

What progress? It is still walking up stairs and kicking a ball, like it did decades ago. If there's any progress it's so incremental that it's negligible. After 20 years and decades more working on it, there's still no commercial version for sale. Couldn't be used for the Fukushima power plant, useless during covid, when is Asimo ever gonna be used for anything aside from tech demos like a dancing monkey? At least a lot has been learned from Asimo, but he will be a stepping stone displayed at a museum like the many failed plane designs that came before the Wright Brothers. Plus Honda abandoned this project so it didn't seem like they saw much progress either.

I met Asimo many years ago when I was a kid at one of these events. At the time, he was considered one of the most advanced robots. During the demonstration, he had a conversation and (amongst other things) managed to serve drinks. It was very impressive. I thought he was the most lovely little robot and wanted to be his friend. Asimo is so cute and endearing, i’m so happy they’ve still kept him going and are continually making improvements. We love you Asimo ❤️🤖

An absolutely astounding piece of machinery. Just the computational advances alone required to allow it to operate so quickly and precisely are amazing. One has to wonder how many ergometers this thing uses to determine its' orientation. Visual analysis, hearing, interpretation of language.... etc.. I wonder as to its' battery life between charges. Can it plug itself into a power source when in need of recharge? One thing I don't find really impressive is the over expression with the arms as this takes up tremendous amounts of computational power and further shortens battery life. Sign language is fine and dandy but I'd prefer to see that processing be put to better use in the way of task performance. All in all, excellent engineering.

sure but what else can it do? atlas is extremely advanced in just one area while Asimo is very advanced in many areas. also, Asimo is kinda meant to do tasks around a home, that means it needs to be more gentle and slower while also maintaining great precision, adapting to both the environment and the items it will be interacting with. it doesn't exactly need to leap over a log and just keep barreling through obstacles.

I think the Asimo project established a humaniod robot legend of Japanese robots since 1986. The 2018 asimo looks very mature since robot P1, P2 and P3, even the 2000 Asimo. It shows the optimized movment and respond time. I think it is very impressive. Boston dynamics robots are foundamentally a set of different robots, which shows a lot of break through. However they are newer generation, Boston Dynamics robots should not be mixed up with Honda Asimo. Asimo already reach its goal. We should appriciate the hard work of pioneers put in to this project which ends up with such a friendly human like robot.

Flaw with using them for radiation. You can't shield one from the gamma rays and still have it move nicely. Gamma radiation, from a blown core, will fuck the electronics on the molecular level. Exactly like Chernobyl. Robot might work, but will be irreparably damaged in short order. Not to mention its now radioactive. Chill with your doctors suggestions. You're very likely not a doctor. Atlas by boston dynamics still seems more advanced. Asimo seems very brittle and much more prone to damage, they also need to demonstrate robustness and tolerance to robot abuse. ATLAS is a research platform for developing and further improving bipedal locomotion and operations. It serves no other purpose than that and is EXTREMELY well done for thaf specific purpose. Honestly ATLAS is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. But those are features that ASIMO, a service robot, does not need to have. ASIMO has interaction capabilities, super dextrous hands and all sorts of measures that make it safe foe use around humans. ATLAS and ASIMO cannot be directly compared as they serve completely different purposes. Both Honda and Boston Dynamics should instead be praised for the incredible robots they havw both created and the andvancements they brought to the world of advanced robotics

Why does Asimo's arms swing so little when running? It is natural for the arms to freely swing when a person is running. Asimo walks and runs like a burglar! LOL!! The new Asimo's movements are a lot more natural and human like. Kudos !

Asimo is such an antiquated design. I can’t believe they’re still demoing it and still haven’t produced something that can operate in the real world.

Prob (definitely) not. The balance hasn't probably been tested by pushing ASIMO around or so, so it's prob gonna just fall over everytime (and if they haven't compensated for that, even have hardware malfunctions)

I know a guy in my neighbourhood who walks like that, he didn't always walk that way, actually it's a bit of a sad story he got jumped by a couple of stray Doberman dogs, they messed him up pretty badly then snatched his groceries and ran off, he's been walking that way ever since. Looks kinda creepy if you ask me.

To all of you comparing ASIMO to Boston Dynamics' Atlas, let me tell you that even if Atlas is much more developed than ASIMO, Atlas is not a household assistant but a normal robot. Boston Dynamics focus their research on how to make a robot just like a human. Honda is focusing on creating a household device who can help you clean, be your personal waiter and (hopefully) much more. Also, I'd rather have an ASIMO at home than an Atlas cause honestly, he's kinda creepy :)

It would be really cool if these guys and Boston Dynamics collaborated together. They both have Pros but they also have cons. Boston Dynamics Works well in the diversity of robots for different tasks. But some are quite noisy and have more a jagged move ment. While these guys Only focus on Asimo and is for the home (while boston dynamics makes them for more than just home) and Asimo walks smoothly. Both need improvements which they are always working on. If they collaborated they could possibly make an even better robot. Although it probably won't happen and it may be difficult if they have different ways to make them. I love both because they make their robots look more like robots than trying to make them look like humans. Both Boston Dynamics and Honda have such good robots I cant wait to see how what they do in the future!
