How can you order a lab to do a search for hypersegmented neutrophils? On a CBC, is that a standard diagnostic check that is always done? Or would a search for that only be triggered by an MCV being above the high end of the normal range?

In the institution where I work, you usually first have to order a blood smear and then even call and specifically tell the doctor looking at the smear what your differential diagnosis is. In other words it's basically a kind of hematologic consult.

@@peev2 So basically you would be ordering a very generic consultation, such as Labcorp's Hematopathology Consultation, Peripheral Smear TEST: 005300. Then you specify what you want examined in that consult.

Especially when they give you super old blood smear from the archive where all cells overlap...Brrrrrruhh that becomes like Rorschach test at a times XD
