I very often have comments and questions on my Anfield videos relating to the potential further development of the Sir Kenny Dalglish and KOP stands.
Although I certainly do not have the answers I have made this video to share what I have either read or been informed and to also take a good look at the areas surrounding the Sir Kenny Dalglish and KOP stands.
I hope you enjoy there video.

I'm Russian. I think the KOP expansion wouldn't be any problem at all in my country. The easiest way is to put the road right under the new KOP stand. Maybe right under the KOP, maybe by putting the road into the tunnel. This is not a problem. The KD Stand is the same as the Main stand was. The solution is the same: buy out three rows of houses and to expand the KD stand then.

The grass area across Walton Breck Road facing the megastore is where I grew up as a child. These terrace streets which were connected to the main road, were eventually demolished and replaced with newer housing. I’ve always found it interesting that the newer housing was built set back from the main road leaving space for ???? Having said that to develop the Kop further you need to demolish 2 pubs and a church at a minimum. Oh and redirect Walton Breck Road ! Won’t happen in next 10 years at least.

I think it's an easy job for FSG to upgrade Sir Kenny Daglish stand and the kop stand To do this at the Sir Kenny Daglish stand, FSG only needs to approach the homeowner in front of the stand to buy their house, the same thing they do like rebuilding the main stand. The problem in rebuilding the kop stand is the road in front of it, yes it will be very difficult if you don't approach the mayor and local residents there, most importantly liverpool and the mayor there cooperate in making train stations and parking lots to accommodate large the number of fans later. FSG is full of great people, great business people who are successful in the world of sport, for them doing the job of building a stand at Anfield is not a difficult job. In the next 5 years there will be a discussion about the work between the local residents' FSG and the mayor. As good fans we just have to support this work so that it can be easily realized. Well, Mr Drone, it will be a very big project for you in the future, and you are very happy to monitor it from your weekly video updates. Seeing a bigger and more modern Anfield in the future is the dream of every fan and club owner of course

Great drone video yet again Nick. Love the aerial view of the Stadium. The main stand and Anfield road are going to dwarf the other two stands once complete. Going forward I can see plans being drawn up of how to increase the SKD and Kop stand to around the 75,00 capacity? If rumours are correct this has already being discussed for the future. It would take a lot of planning and re-development for this to happen but given the fan base and recent developments can see this happening over the next 5 yrs. Watch this space? Keep up the great drone footage Nick 👍

Remember to upgrade the SKD stand to Main stand size would require the demolition of both sides of Skerries Rd and quite possibly one side of Wylva street, because of ‘Right to light’ legislation. You cannot just build something that big which would dominate the back views fo those properties. These costs are huge beyond the construction cost of the stand itself. To upgrade the Kop requires the relocation/destruction of the Albert and Park pubs and the church plus diverting WBR road as said. Huge cost when factored against the extra return in seat revenue. Then for either upgrade the improved transport links as said. Not impossible but hugely expensive. Good job Mr D

Wylva Rd is where the Stadium must end on SKD stand, not only for light issues but open space for people when they turn up. Look how good the outside of the main stand looks. Kop you need to buy out the first row of houses between Hartnup and Donaldson and The shops, church so the Walton brick road goes behind the church. Mind you MU is making a 95k stadium soon. The transport issue is that any further expansion requires rail link within 1 mile. There is a freight line that Mersey Rail is considering making into a passenger line again. That would be a potential trigger for further development. Agree the cost of compulsory purchase for the houses wouldn't be a financial issue but would create mahor issues with the local community. The Kop Huddy did an excellent video on his channel about this question, well worth a watch. YNWA. Cheers again MrD

We are going to have 2 fantastic sides to our ground the more I see of the Anny Road it’s just going to dwarf the Kop, which imo can’t be allowed to happen I remain convinced the space behind the Kop with the LFC shop etc can quite easily be moved to another stand, imo we need to get to 70 thousand to be a financially sound investment that pays for itself in a couple of years, we now have 4 unique stands The Kop, The Anny Rd, The Main Stand, The King Kenny stand, they are our stands certainly for my life time and I have no problem with the names we’ve used, we had such a long list of suggestions it must have been difficult to pick a single one, then you’ve got the blue shite celebrating when they win a corner or free kick which is ridiculous but it is EFC we’re talking about not Barca or PSG. or Bayern anyway up the mighty reds.

Hi Nick a very impressive video with lot's of information. To develop and extend the Kenny Dalglish stand. Liverpool could completely rebuild the stand with a 2 degrees stepper terracing, build into the car park, the old car park could be also retained by incorporating into an underground car beneath the new Kenny Dalglish. This would then be similar with 3 tiers as the new main stand. To extend the Kop stand. Liverpool will need to start a fresh by completely rebuild the Kop stand. Increase the angle of the terracing by 3 degrees this will increase the overall high of the stand and be similar in design to the Anfield Road.... However This will be a lot of money (100's Millions) and as mentioned before a Stadium's over 60,000+ Transport links will need to be improved and similar To The New Tottenham Hotspur Stadium In North London. My conclusion with inventive building design's this can be achieved at a huge cost. Keep up to great mate and well done.

If the ground could be developed after anfield Road the transport links would have to be upgraded there is a old freight line that could be used and would work with investment. The skdstand could be made same size as main stand but at least one set of houses would need to go and maybe a 2nd row due to lighting issues and views. The kop could be expanded by being made steeper like dortmonds yellow wall but I believe there are laws in the uk that prohibit such a steep angle . And the pub the church would never move to allow reroute of main road so that's the issues with further development but anfield should be 80.000

The club started to own a number of properties on Skerries Rd and when they realised buying the whole road wasn’t an option, they refurbished the houses and sold them for a profit. The houses behind the main stand were so derelict that it was in the council’s best interests to push for the compulsory purchase order. There’s also two pubs and a church behind the Kop. There are always engineering solutions to every problem. The KOP end, they could expand it by lowering the road height slightly and box it in a tunnel under a new Kop Stand (like the railway line that goes beneath the West stand of the aviva). The Sir Kenny one, the footprint is fine, they just need to update the stand to the latest facilities, not expand it massively or recreate facilities that already exist in the two rebuilt stands already....

The club would have to buy the houses behind the Sir Kenny stand, then they would have to re-route the road behind the Kop and buy the house across the road from it), they'd then have to knock the club shop down because it would be too tight between an expanded Kop and the club store. I remember attending games at Anfield a couple of decades ago and having discussions with mates about how the old main stand could be modernised and the discussions were the same re: housing, which is what the club did. The Kop, personally I can't see it being resized. Perhaps a redesign of the exterior and roof to fit with new stand designs but to divert the Walton Breck Road, buy out of housing and the pubs as well as what they do with the church I think is a bridge too far in both planning and associated costs. Considering planning for the upgrade of the Kemlyn/Centenary/SKD stand started in the late 80s/early 90s, you'd think they'd have thought about how they could expand all the stands while keeping the look similar. Even with the Kop, which started rebuilding in 94, why didn't they at least make it the same height as the SKD stand and 'connect' them? But like you said, the lack of space on Skerries and Walton Breck Roads is what'll kill any future development plans.

The houses on Skerries road are interesting. I looked up in the land registry to check tenure and they're mostly freehold but a few of the houses on the even numbered side away from the stadium are leasehold (about 14 to 26 or something like that). I didn't go farther than that because if you want to actually look up the owner, title number and mortgage, and what the covenants and easements actually are, you have to pay £3 per property for a report with all that information (I assume that's a new fee or something, seems like they're charging for anything that isn't nailed down these days). So I suspect they're not owned by the council or by LFC. No way will they ever release Walton Breck Road for development.

Buy up all the houses, board them up, run the area down, bring the house prices down and then buy more houses and properties at an ever decreasing cost. Costing tens of thousands to local home owners. I'm a Liverpool supporter but what the club and council did to local people was disgusting and I'm surprised no-one took legal action. They wouldn't have got away with it in the affluent areas of the city like Woolton, Childwall etc.

Very difficult to expand the SKD stand without buying up the houses, which I don't think would appeal to the residents. However if they offered the residents a quarter of a mill each, then I'm sure they would be queuing outside the gates of Anfield with the house keys in their hands. Just my thoughts.

Back in the 1980's when developing the Kemlyn Road Stand was the big plan it took more than 10 years to get the houses empty so the expansion could happen, Some of the residents around the ground have grown up in the houses and don't want to move and as much as I'd love Anfield to be an 80,000 seat stadium I don't think folks should be forced from their home for it. I lived in Lothair Road for a while but the new Main Stand has seen that house removed not that I was there then.

There are restrictions on how much daylight you can block out from the surrounding structures and mass transit has to be available if they expand any further beyond ~60K. IMO the KOP is an easier job even though you’d have to redirect the road and demolish businesses. That’s just money. The houses on the KD side will be very difficult and the club will be very sensitive on what they do on that side PR wise.

FSG and John Henry won’t want to hear this, but eventually they will have to develop Anfield further. The sad truth is that Liverpool are late to the 60,000+ stadium parade. Man City and Chelsea are both looking at expanding their stadiums to 65,000+, meanwhile Newcastle are also planning for a super stadium. It’s bad enough that Spurs and even bloody West Ham have bigger stadiums than us, and of course Old Trafford is in a league of its own. 60K was a good capacity ten / fifteen years go. Now even with Anfield finally at that capacity, its at risk of being left behind. Whether they like it or not, the Sir Kenny and Kop stands HAVE to be expanded in future and take Anfield to 70K capacity at least.

Manchester City are only just looking at their expansion now, it will be years until it's done and the Etihad is smaller than Anfield in the meantime. Newcastle's ground has a far bigger problem than Anfield with expansion obstacles, including a listed building right up against the ground's north-east side. They'd need a whole new stadium, which takes years. Spurs' stadium is 62, 850, hardly dwarfing Anfield and it won't be expanded for a long time given the scale of investment that has to be repaid there already. That 1,850 extra seats also comes with a half-billion pound price tag Liverpool don't have hanging around their necks. Chelsea cannot expand at all, famously. They'd need a whole new stadium, and that would take years to plan and execute. Manchester United have a big capacity but the stadium is in need of absolutely huge renovation. They're even suggesting demolishing and rebuilding, such is the scale of the problem, as they have a tiny south stand that is up against a railway line. Liverpool are in a very healthy position with the stadium, even if they don't expand. I'm confident they will, and they can do so in a time scale that is similar to their rivals if they really need to.

The Kop could be demolished and rebuilt with a much steeper stand however I don’t think there’s much chance the SKD stand will be extended with more seats I think it could be extended further into the car park and improve the match day and corporate facilities and it could also be cladded to match the Main Stand and Anfield Road Stand.

the only way to redevelop the Sir Kenny stand is buy buying at least that one row of houses, although i doubt even that would be enough due to safety regulations, the only way for the Kop to go is higher and steeper with all safe standing.

I think the engineering problems can be solved, albeit at great cost. But this is an organisation that turns over half a billion pounds a year and spends £80m on strikers. You could pay £1m for all 20 of those homes and still get your money back very quickly in ticket sales on the larger stand. I feel it's a where there is a will there is a way situation. Just buying people out isn't quite right, you'd have to find them new homes in the area for good will. The bigger issue is the transport, as you say, but there has been talk of reopening the nearby Walton & Anfield station in 2019. It would be a great improvement for the club and the area even if they don't increase ground capacity. I'm not sure the Kop would need a bigger footprint, as it's a different type of stand. I think the club will wait to see what happens with safe standing and go from there. Maybe they could increase the rake on the stand and go safe standing. It's fun to think about, but I'm delighted with the progress already being made.

Excellent update as always. Regarding further expansion, I think it's a case of 1, can they expand further? 2, will they expand further? I've heard different rumours. I think they will definitely have to buy at least one row of houses on Skerries Road which is a possibility. If so I reckon it could take the capacity to around 70.000 (Anfield Road End included) which would be great. As long as the people living there are looked after and get good money. Difficult situation in that regard. It is their homes after all. I've read different things regarding The Kop. The properties across the road are not in use from what I've heard and could be bought by the club and realign the road similar to the Anfield Road end. Not sure if the church is still in use but it can certainly be done or some have suggested a tunnel going under the stand which I believe Villa Park has in one stand. I'd be more than happy for the SKD stand to be expanded taking Anfield to around 70.000 but one of the biggest controversies which has been suggested is making the Kop End a two tier stand which is an absolute no, no IMO. The Kop is special and one of the reasons for that is because it is one big stand. I want Anfield as big as possible but I'd rather the Kop remain as it is rather than having another tier even if it did mean having an extra 6 or 7 thousand seats. Ideally the Kop can be extended without a tier above with something similar to Spurs or Dortmund with a bigger single tier stand. Someone on one of the forums recently said that they spoke to people working at the stadium and apparently they definitely have plans to further expand so it could be a case of watch this space. Think it would be a fair few years down the line though.
@LFCliid
@LFCliid Жыл бұрын
Yes agree the kop must remain single tier however they develop it. The tunnel solution seems like the way forward. The church could surely be relocated, it’s not exactly an architectural masterpiece and it’s not like churches aren’t sold and relocated either, many get converted into houses these days or just left to rot like in toxteth. I’d like to see them redevelop the kop next. SKD stand has further issues. The seating is very tightly packed and wouldn’t pass todays standards. So even if they kept that bottom tier, they’d lose some capacity from the top tier before gaining it again through the rebuild, making the cost per seat calculation a bit higher than you’d expect. So I think that would be a longer wait and probably for the next owners of the club to tackle.
@markdoherty8161
@markdoherty8161 Жыл бұрын
@@LFCliid agree with you. The biggest fear I have is the thought of building an upper tier on the Kop. It currently holds just under 12.400. I'd be happy if they could extend it to 15.000 or slightly above that. It would take the capacity to over 63.000 which would be great. The SKD stand would have a lot of issues to overcome. Don't want to sound negative but I just can't see it happening anytime soon however there are rumours something may happen further down the line so fingers crossed. I've always wanted to see Anfield with a capacity of 70.000 or above and if both the Kop and the SKD stand do get expanded it would be amazing. For now I'm delighted with the main stand and Anfield Road expansions.

But I wouldn´t change the Anfield -look. Might be expensive though. I remember when I went for the first time as a kid to The Kop by myself, oh boy it felt HUGE. Anyway, who says The Kop should be square -shape, make it trapezoid, diagonal to the direction of the road behind! If the only way is up, then let´s go up... Beautiful scenes!

From what I remember reading years ago. Liverpool bought, owned the houses on Skerris road that back on to the SKD stand. There was another road, closer, which they bought roughly where car park is. For many years there was one house in that road that had two old ladies living in it. They refused to sell for years. Once LFC bought that house they built SKD stand. They then decided to sell the row of houses in Skerris road very cheaply!!! Hindsight is a good thing... Back then they were satisfied with what we currently have SKD stand. Anfield road - copy the Mancs build a tunnel for the road.

It might come down to return on investment being just as big an issue as logistics…. The Kop already holds 13000 and the largest feasible behind Goal stand that we will have will be the 2 tired ARE at 15950, that’s only 3000 more than the current Kop, even if we managed to build a Single tiered monster Kop of say 17000 to match Tottenhams, that’s still only 4000 more than current, so really the £100m wouldn’t be for a 17k stand but the RoI would be only on 4k!!!!, something similar with the SKD stand, it holds almost 12k and to replicate the Main Stand would be a £120m investment for only 8k seats. Therefore a £200m investment would equate to only a 12k capacity increase in Anfield. No one on earth would pay that out for 12k seat increase, especially not FSG!!

I'd say no until the access problems get dealt with. Inner Liverpool desperately needs better rail and bus in general, but it's hard to deliver economically with a large enough customer base because of the way the council in the early to mid 1980s reduced the density of the city and effectively suburbanized it with semi-detached houses rather than the kind of mid-rise blocks of owner-occupied or market-rate rental flats you often see in redeveloped areas in US cities and in London. This happened especially in areas between Anfield and the river like Vauxhall and then of course the three bedroom semi thing is one Militant policy that was popular with subsequent councils and they kept doing it. One of those things of being careful what you wish for.

The club must think at some point the Sir Kenny stand can be done if you look at the new Anfield road stand roof at both ends they are done exactly the same. If they weren't thinking about the Sir Kenny being possible then the roof at that end you would think would of been done more to suit the merge into current stand however it would merge more with a similar roof to the main and Anfield road new roof. Yes I think you are talking years down the line that's more than obvious as highlighted I'm this video the issues involved however they are far from impossible. Personally I would prefer the Kop done next the buildings at the back can easily be persuaded if suitable offers made in re location of church etc and the road only needs to move back at a less steep angle as currently is these things are far from impossible and I'm pretty confident at least one of the stands will be starting the next faze in next 5-6 years.
