My village elders also said there is a tribe in China or Myanmar (I forgot, which place) deep in the jungle that speak the same lotha dialect. When they tried to contact them, they got scared and ran away. They wear the same shawals as the nagas and they are still like an isolated tribe.

Nagas are basically a mix between Sino Tibetan and Austroasiatic or austronesian tribes in China such as the Wa ethnic minority. Nagas migrated out of Tibet into Yunan and mixed with the Wa ethnic minority and from there to Burma and eventually into Nagaland. In terms of culture, Nagas are similar to Wa ethnic minority; totem worship, heading hunting, log drum and log pulling etc while genetically more like southern Chinese.

The language that general sumi people use is very different from those people in Pughoboto area (aka Sumi Aphuye), situated along Kohima border and their sumi language and tone has lot of similarities with Angami and Chakesang language. So similar that villagers in those area understand Angami and Chakesang language and people from neighbouring villages understand their Sumi Aphuye language. That's interesting to know. However on the souther side it is told that Angami and Mao are two sons of the same mother. Mao being the elder brother and Angami being the younger. Upon the mother's death the two brothers decided to share their mothers shawl half in half and departed their ways. Therefore it even lays a bigger claim to the story since the shawls of both tribes are strikingly similar. Chakeshang broke away from the main Angami tribe and so did the poumais from the maos.

Nagas are basically a mix between Sino Tibetan and Tai Kadai tribes in China such as the Wa ethnic minority. Nagas migrated out of Tibet into Yunan and mixed with the Wa ethnic minority and from there to Burma and eventually into Nagaland. In terms of culture, Nagas are similar to Wa ethnic minority.

Same with us Kukis. Its said they dug a whole from their underground prison to escape, where they flee and travelled southwards into Myanmar. We also have tales of how the entrance of the cave was guarded, some tribes say by a tiger, while others by a monster, etc and each tribe has their own theory of how they managed to distract the predator and escape

In our karbi tribe , our forefathers said they were fled from China thousand years ago through yangtze kiang (yellow river) during the warring period in China with huge migration from different tribes in Northeast to hide in Dense mountainous jungle in present Northeast India. At that time there was a huge plague that was past on oral tradition to our new generation but sadly our history has nothing left now😢.

they are Yis, one of the southwestern minorities, sw minorities can be categorized in Tibeto-burman type and Tai Ka Dai type. Yi are tibeto burman people, tibeto burman is one major branch of the Sino Tibetans, the other one is Sinitics / Sino (Chinese). Chinese and Tibetan departed thousand of years ago, we share the same origin in linguistic and blood, though the difference today is enormous. So basically, you nagas are tibeto burman, some say that naga has the highest frequency of O haplegroup which is the dominant haplegroup of east and southeast asian. You can study about human genetics if you are interested, you can also test you DNA now with 23me and other services.
