As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, KIPP Houston Public Schools invited Dr. Angela Duckworth of the University of Pennsylvania (the author of the book 'Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance') to present the “Psychology of Achievement” to Houston-area educators and parents. Duckworth, who was named a 2013 MacArthur Fellow for “transforming our understanding of the roles that grit and self-control play in educational achievement,” shared her knowledge of these attributes and strategies for building them.

Yup, couldn't agree any more! another way to put this is to never make CRITICAL life decisions in HALT mode (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired).

Deliberate practice 1) specific goal. 2) specific weaknesses. 3) immediate feedback. 4) repeat till effortless mastery. thinking that you could be doing worse stuff optimists focus on what they can change about their life. see negative events through 3rd person perspective

That's why I always believe that school system is giving a stigma that scores can measure excellence. And that if you get lower score, it means you are less talented than anyone else in the class. Meanwhile, its hard to find out what you really want but when you get there. You just don't want to stop seeking for more. How can I do more. And be better and better as you go along.

I don't get the chart at 20:05, how the grit is measured. So, students have higher grit than special forces officers?

Human being is psyche but not only a psyche. Human being is also a materiality, in other words, he has a physical reality. Physical reality means a practical presence, thus human being in his psychological reality evolves in an environment. Therefore is it possible to fully give account to human achievement by looking only to the psychology or it is better to see how the sociological and the psychological interfere, interact. If sociology is about the socious in other words human in his basic interactions, how psychology alone can be enough when it comes to give full account of achievement. For instance consider two individual one in Ukraine right now and the other in Swiss, both have achieve the same task how psychology alone can explain grit, self control and achievement?

Will Smith is no longer credible to me after witnessing his personal life. I'm glad some people can appreciate this but like her book, this is just too much word salad for me. I tried and just can't get pass her presentation. I prefer to get to the meat and potatoes.

@@boston1977bostonI read her book before looking her up. All this stuff was on her book Grit. I’m very impressed with what she’s researched and studied. The presentation wasn’t the best but she’s not some salesperson hawking motivational products. She’s the real deal and her writing reflected that.
