Her not winning an Emmy is a war crime

Ironically enough. I'd prefer a Angela Lansbury and the Elusive Emmy. I wish she won the Emmy over the Oscar. Now ain't that a statement. But she was nominated 18 times. EIGHTEEN. I find it insane for someone of her talents to be so negelected by an I dusty that benefitted from her

I would argue that an Honorary Oscar for acting is WAY more impressive than a competitive Oscar win! The former is in recognition of one's body of work over the years.

I recently watched the Manchurian Candidate and whilst I admire Patty Dukes work in The Miracle worker, for the one scene alone that Oscar was Lansbury's and I'm not over it.

She was an amazing actress. Still crazy how she never won an Academy Award, but sometimes the greats never win an Oscar, such as Peter O’Toole and in some cases are never nominated such as Donald Southerland. Great video Brian, take care!

The reason she didn’t get an Oscar for Bedknobs and Broomsticks the way Julie Andrews did for Mary Poppins is because Angela Lansbury did not lose the role of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady that same year. 😜 If anyone wants to see a glimpse of sheer genius and raw talent in a Broadway musical, here on KZfaq search “Angela Lansbury in Gypsy.” There’s a montage of clips of musical numbers in that show. It ends with her singing the end of the finale of the show, Rose’s Turn. You can feel the pathos, pain, anger, and desperation in just a few seconds of that song. And that powerful singing voice! How I wish I could go back to 1974 and see her do the entire show live on Broadway. A3rd Tony Award well deserved.

Wonderful video for such a talented actress. I saw Angela Lansbury in London 2014 in "Blithe Spirit". It was amazing! She had incredible stage presence! Her character Madame Arcati is actually a supporting role - very important and a real crowd pleaser, but "only" a supporting role. And everybody in the audience were here to see HER (even it's a very funny play), but she fitted very smoothly in the excellent ensemble, not overshadowing her colleagues wirh her star power. She acted WITH them and did not degrade the rest of the ensemble. What a wonderful performance, I will never forget.

Seeing pictures of Lansbury as a young woman, I have a hard time understanding how it was decreed within the ranks of Hollywood she was not a beauty. She was absolutely lovely. But of course we all know she was made of sturdier stuff, and that was what truly prevailed through a decades long career. Lansbury was a solid pro who could walk onto any sound stage or theater set and deliver. And that was what the folks at the Academy ceremony were applauding when she got her Honorary Oscar. That, and the fact that she was a genuinely decent human being with a good heart.

Angela Lansbury should have definitely been nominated for Death on the Nile. The film is great and she is absolutely amazing in it, funny and memorable! Maggie Smith won this year and she is ok and her film is funny too, but she was not better than Lansbury. I think they gave her the Oscar for the weird thing to win an Oscar for playing an actor who doesn’t win an Oscar. Gaslight is a great film and all performances were fantastic! She should have won for that at least.

She was definitely disappointed losing to Duke. In a interview she said she bought a new dress for it, and it wasn’t a great night, so there was an expectation of winning. I would’ve preferred a nomination for Death On The Nile too instead of Penelope Milford in Coming Home, but I don’t think it would’ve changed the end result with Maggie Smith winning. Glad she got a honorary one.

I'm finally getting to this video and I'm crying just as I knew I would 😭 I absolutely love Angela Lansbury. Growing up I loved the 'children's' movies she did and then getting into classic film I discovered just how long she's been around and saw her first and most acclaimed big-screen performances. Getting into musicals more also added to my love for her. But most significantly! a couple years ago the Hallmark movies & mysteries channel started playing Murder, She Wrote and I became obsessed. My mom and I set the episodes to record and we watched through most of the show together. Even if I wasn't home, I would still watch the episodes somehow and we would talk about them together. I was so shocked and sad when I saw news that she died, though she was 96 and that's a great, long life.

I had no idea she had such a prolific film career. I mainly know her as a theatre legend

you know, it was pretty bittersweet when she passed. like sad that she is no longer on the earth, but just like loretta lynn and betty white, passing in her sleep well into her 90s is such a wonderful way to go. however!! this video made me cry… darn you!! great work as always!!

I have watched the original Gaslight (it’s in KZfaq btw) and Lansbury was the one who was most improved from the original, at least in terms of memorability.

Bedknobs & Broomsticks was my introduction to Lansbury as well. In 1980 the movie was on cable. Ms. Lansbury had said in an interview that she should have played the role older. You are correct in that she should have received an Oscar nomination. In the fall of 1980 my mom took me to see "The Mirror Crak'd" after an Oscar snub in '78 for another Agatha Christie adaptation were two more possible Oscar nominations! It is downright criminal that she never won an Emmy award especially for the episodes where she played Jessica's Cockney cousin were worthy! Another strike against her possibly for a win for "The Manchurian Candidate" was the fact that after Kennedy's assassination the movie was pulled from theaters by Sinatra and the studio. Making it more difficult for Academy voters to see.

I was so happy that she received an Honorary Oscar and lived ten more years than the usual recipients. Marlene Dietrich said that the Honorary Oscar is the deathbed Oscar they give to people before they die. Still, a consolation it is not. I was so sad when she passed away recently. I don't remember any aspect of entertainment she was not apart of. I would have given it to her for The Manchurian Candidate. She really challenged public perception of her image doing that one, and who knew the film would be so controversial ahead of the Kennedy Assassination? Gaslight was an impressive debut. I haven't seen The Picture of Dorian Gray myself yet, but the Academy did respect legends through the Best Supporting actor categories. The Academy was still young and getting classically trained stage and screen legend Ethel Barrymore an Oscar was credibility chasing on the Academy's end to be legitimate, though Ethel did give an Oscar winning performance. Besides, Lionel already had a Best Actor Oscar to his name by then. Anne Revere was an amazing actor too. Character actors did get Best Supporting Oscars a lot. Getting back to Manchurian, while the political tensions merited dramatic prowess, the Academy was just getting into the Method as it was growing in prominence. As Lansbury is classically trained, it's possible that their preferences were influenced by trends and actors whom they wanted to have full careers in Hollywood. By then, Angela had some clout from Broadway and Hollywood might have given her that nod to say "hey, we found you! Will you stop complaining if we give you a nod?" With the Emmys, it is a crime against humanity that Angela never won one. Studio executives whom she had respective beefs with regarding ageism she experienced probably led to those snubs. The whole show's cancellation was Angela finally fighting back a la Bette Davis style. I can go on and on about Angela. Every classic movie star that passes away who was born in the 20s just makes me miss my grandparents more.

Back in 9th grade we were asked to write about the person we most admire...most people chose a parent, I chose Angela Lansbury. (I suppose that was my coming out story too, though I didn't know it at the time). To this day she is still one of my favorite performers. She brought so much joy to so many of her fans. So glad she finally got her recognition from the Academy.

I find it so humiliating that she lost 12 Emmys in a row for MURDER, SHE WROTE (especially because she lost more than once to Tyne Daly, Sharon Gless, Dana Delany, Patricia Wettig and Kathy Baker).

This series is so good. I don't know if you have but it would be interesting to see one on Adam Sandler, Ralph Fiennes, William Dafoe or Samuel L Jackson (I know he has an honouary Oscar but I'm shocked he never won a competitive Oscar).

I thought that one of the most glaring omissions from the Oscar’s Best Supporting Actress lineup in 1978 for her rollicking performance as Salome Otterbourne in Death On The Nile. I may have even given her the Oscar that year. I’ll have to go back and check the nominees that year. At least she won NBR for it.

Great video, Brian! Lansbury's career, in some respects, is comparable to that of Glenn Close. I was surprised to learn recently that Jean Stapleton from "All in the Family" had turned down the Lansbury role in "Murder She Wrote."

She should have won for Manchurian Candidate.

It's hard to argue with Patty Duke -- but OMG that performance in "The Manchurian Candidate" is why Best Supporting Actress Oscar was born.

She was so deserving in many ways, but what a career she had :-) As an aside, for Alternative Oscars, I would be interested in your thoughts on best voice performances in Animation, both lead and supporting. Definitely Angela Lansbury would be derserving of nominations for both 'The Last Unicorn' and 'Beauty and the Beast'.

Her performance in Manchurian was bested by Patty Duke in The Miracle: if not for her, shed’ve won that year, almost certainly. I’m pretty sure that Duke could have been placed alongside Bancroft in Lead Actress, as the screen time is certainly there, but you know what the Academy likes to do for child actors.

If only her performance for Manchurian candidate came out another year she would have won. But patty duke in miracle worker is perhaps the best win in this category of all time!

Forget the Oscar! How on Earth did Angela never win an Emmy for Murder, She Wrote?!

GASLIGHT isn't half as good as the original British version which came out four years earlier. On a vastly smaller budget with two great actors who weren't big stars (Anton Walbrook and Diana Wynyard) it blows the Cukor version out of the water.

Even when Angela was young, she kind of looked old.

Angela was brilliant but Patty Duke deserved it the scene at the water pump nailed it for Duke and Bancroft everytime I see this scene I get emotional it never gets dated or old for me

Angela.turned down the role of the evil nurse in Cuckoos Nest she would have the Oscar that year considering the weak lineup that year in that category and the fact that she was overdue Colleen Dewhurst also turned down the part either one of them would have been amazing Louise Fletcher was great but not in the same league as these ladies
