Angela Lansbury in PRETTYBELLE (1982)

A film made during a rehearsal in April, 1982, in preparation for the cast recording of the 1971 musical Prettybelle. The original cast gathered to make a recording, as the show had closed in Boston after a month during tryouts and one had never been made. When asked about the failure of the show, Dame Lansbury explained that the storyline was somewhat hard to digest, and then she added: "and then there was a song called 'The No-Tell Motel'".
Towards the end Mark Dawson rehearses a song and Jule Styne, the show's composer, makes an appearance. The rest of the tape has about 40 minutes of chorus rehearsal.
This footage was shot by Robert Sher, who produced the recording.

This is fascinating to see. The choral singing is thrilling on the recording and so wonderful to see rehearsed. Angela has always been a class act every step of the way. The show does have some way out there problems within its plot, but so much of the score is thrilling.

@@FolliesFan-yu8mf Thank you for this! I’ve only known the CD recording! Too bad Charlotte Rae was too big a TV star by then to record her song from the original, “New Orleans Poon”. But at least they got Angela BEFORE Murder She Wrote, when she was still affordable! ($10k). Have you seen the amazing musicals on KZfaq by Starkid, Including their Harry Potter trilogy?

Wow! I didn't even know they attempted a cast album a decade or so after the out of town closing! So, this feels like a gem. According to Wikpedia " Leading lady Angela Lansbury pledged to boycott a move to Broadway unless everything was fixed during the out-of-town tryout in Boston." And Ms. Lansbury was known for being un-diva-like and a real trouper so that says a lot about the state the show was in.
