To your point about it being over the top, for many, many people, it seems that singers belting out high notes just really turns them on. I don't think that generally, that is Angelina's idea of what makes for good singing, but Toby has a lot more experience writing big hits and my supposition is that he told her that it is widely popular and so with her wanting to appeal to a wider audience, she went along with it. I might be totally wrong, but that is my supposition.

I think if you see this being over the top, you may want to listen to the lyrics again. Maybe it's more than about a broken date. Maybe it's a tragedy about being lost and alone. Invisible in a shallow world of platitudes and meaningless smiles. Existential loneliness might justify a howl or two.

I really liked this performance and didn't perceive any overthetopness in it. I knew before subscribing that we would not agree on everything. We're pretty close though. It's good to get a different perspective even if I don't share it. I guess you came to this one after the Amira reaction. That could have made a difference (?). Thank you for being in our lives. Somehow i am not surprised you said this is not your favorite. However for the same reasons you mentioned this is not your favorite they are the precise reasons why I think this is among her very best performances and in fact I believe this song might well be the song that will break Angelina into space in 2024. Angels...Time to jump on hm! LOL Just kidding! She's still in some ways experimenting with music., so maybe this was an approach she wanted to try out. No problem with what you feel. For me, she was showing a side of her we hardly really see from her. That is my reason for really liking this one. Over the top in some portions of the song? I can see what you mean, but she rarely if at all goes over the top in any of her songs. Since she doesn't really sing a song the same way twice, it might sound a bit different the next time she sings it. It does make us wonder what the official release is going to sound like! Really enjoy and appreciate your reactions to Angelina! Keep up the great work!

Simply pure Billie Holiday style jazz with the 'sass' that Amy Winehouse was famous for. You can detect bits of Adele as well but Billie's and Amy's influence are much more prominent here than Adele who isn't a jazz singer.

In this case, we'll have to agree to disagree - I LOVE this song and performance, in particular the soul and passion AJ conveys - much like she did in 2 other fan favorites, Its a Man's World and Rather Go Blind. This was a different performance for Angelina because she has seldom done a song where she tells a story from the antagonist's point of view. And Angelina always performs to serve the song. I am hopeful that the studio release will tell the story better. And like it or not, Paul, you're as much an Angel as any of us.😇

To reach a broader public and become a superrich superstar, she must chose one genre for one homogenous audience. In these days this really means 15-35 yrs old. The songs she's writing herself make for a genre that fits well with this age group jazz material for another etc. To be an "allround" super star here and there could probably give her a decent income, if she'd like to settle there, but I don't think she would. It's up to you, Angelina!

If one remembers that Angelina Jordan is inspired by Billie Holiday to use her voice like an instrument, then what she's doing does not seem over the top, but seems as clever as the best saxophone player. Her best originals seem that way to me. I love it. Now if you're wanting a pastoral melodic fantasy, full of legato, this would seem over the top. That Angelina can perform this high energy in-your-face performance… and then go around and perform “Unchained Melody” like she did for the Nobel Peace prize ceremony attests to the incredible skill she has to sing ANYTHING absolutely beautifully. 🎶💙👣

I imagine she should be too much for some people in different ways at different moments. Very thick vocal personality, lots of versatility. So that's exactly how I hope this does go for her.
