Angelina was 9 years old at the time of this performance and this was HER ARRANGEMENT of the 1956 original by Screaming Jay Hawkins ! The note you saw the band leader looking over were Her wishes { as called them ) on how she wanted the band to play her arrangement . Due to her professionalism and superb vocals the band affectionately nicknamed her " The Boss ".

My thoughts on this performance. I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. You just watched a Masterpiece! At the beginning of this video you see Angelina pass a piece of paper to her music director. She’s asking for a change of something in the music. (I don’t know what but I sure wish I did!!) She arranges her own music, even at that sweet young age!! She certainly was given a gift and I think she’s incredibly amazing!!

This is Angelina paying respect to the original singer, but also to the genre. It’s hard to believe that a nine year old would have that perspective, but this arrangement is her own, and it clearly was done after studying the famous performance by Screamin Jay Hawkins. And on top of all that preparation, we still get Angelina’s own stamp on this. And even more on top of that, she just killed it. It was good to see you smiling and grinning for the entire song.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the vocal arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version and communicated to the band how she wanted it to be played - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the same band members at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and communicates to them what she wants to do. The first thing she says is that she wants to start, followed by her saying she wants to start over, later she tells the pianist that the key is too low and that she wants to raise it a half-tone, then at the end of the song she changes the ending on the fly. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZfaq, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. This is Angelina's tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

Angelina is not only a gifted natural singer, but does the arranging too. Amazing talent!

I fully understand your thoughts about little kids sing adult songs. Angelina is very good at making her own arrangements to make the song more age appropriate.

Two things that shows how great she is even at such a young age is the great musicians don't mind accompanying her at all and in some of there rehearsals you see her making suggestions on how she wants the music changed and it's not a problem for them to make the changes she wants.she is just a child prodigy that was wired differently when it comes to music ,enjoyed your reaction to this, thanks ,and thumbs up to you 👍

Angelina doesn't steer away from a challenge as long as the lyrics were suitable for her age, which it was because she made some lyrical changes herself, showed in the beginning, than it's on. She created and performed a fantastic rendition of this song making it the best one out there so far at the age of 9.

Another Angelina cover thst is "required" is her singing how great thou art at 12 years old. The video was added later by a fan. The original she sang in front of a white wall with a guitar player. Home-made.

New subscriber. Because of her family, Angelina seems to have been raised to be a healthy, typical kid. However, talent-wise she was bever a typical kid or, come to think of it, a typical teenager. In a good way! I think her artistry so advanced as to be atypical, and because of that she hasn't received universal notoriety, although by "typical" musician standards she is already a success.

👣As you now have seen a few AJ videos, and now this one, I sure hope you will open up to a little bit of curiosity on where the barefoot prinsess acctually comes from. As you`ve seen by now; - Angelina is maybe not exactly like any other child singer. This self driven singing wonder (mother Sara TRYED hard to get her to sing the usual classic childrens songs, but Angelina held on to what ever big and demanding songs she could look up on YT) picks all her songs herself, exept probably when certain songs was written for her to sing,* or was whished for by some event hosts** she was performing for. I guess that at least 95% of her catalog is her own pickings. There have been whishes from her family, for some songs that she should re-write the lyrics, to make them more age apropriate. So that is the case for at least 3 of her songs. 👣 👣Any way, at any age, you will be stunned and amazed. Her "mature" voice from 6/7 years old allready, makes all these song the exact right songs for her to sing, even though we never really manage to fully accept that this is a tiny or young child performing. It simply should not be. But it is, and we can learn to accept it, but even more so; - we can learn to to enjoy it, - being amazed by her and even blessed by what she brings us.👣 🙁I understand your skepticism, and I usually share it as well, but for Angelina I had to make an exeption. I get where you coming from about bring a little cringe on Little boys or girls singing adult songs. But I've never felt that with Angelina. Feeling Good for instance is a song, a wife (or Husband) might strip to in the bedroom, but it's not about that when Angelina sings it. Some how from the moment she steps on stage, she is immediately understood to be a professional singer by the audience and band members a like.
