Yet her full genius, artistry, musical IQ, and respect for the original artist can’t be appreciated by this performance alone. You must compare it to the Screamin Jay Hawkins 1956 original to begin to glimpse what AJ is actually doing here in her arrangement. His image is on the candle at the start of her cover. While "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, almost never is the tone of the original Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins is the original rock screamer (think beyond Ozzy Osbourne type craziness), his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet this unassuming Norwegian girl respectfully takes control and sings his own difficult song in a manner that exceeds his both musically and socially. She starts low, rising in intensity throughout, includes many of his embellishments that other covers omit, and finishes in an unexpected and practically operatic style. And you said you wanted to know a more about her so I have to share this little bio so you can learn a little about her background and her kind soul...... *Angelina Jordan* - Angelina Jordan was born Jan 10 2006 in Oslo, Norway. She is currently 14 - She began singing at the age of one and a half - At 2 or 3 she discovered Jazz through her grandmother and started studying all the greats from Jazz history with youtube videos. - *Why Angelina always sings barefoot* - When Angelina was 6 years old, she was traveling with her grandmother and met a poor girl with no shoes trying to make money on the streets. They talked for a while and discussed their dreams. It was cold and the girl had scars on her feet. Seeing this, Angelina took off her shoes and gave them to the girl. The girl thanked her and told Angelina she would pray for her every day. That day Angelina made a vow to always sing barefoot until all the children of the world could have shoes. well i guess i will go first with some info about this amazing young singer there will be a lot more telling stuff about her she have a very large and dedicated fanbase. Angelina was 9 i believe when this was recorded, it is a very special cover this version, she have done this song again but not on this level as it was recommended that her voice matured more before doing something like this again. She started singing when she was 1.5 year ol,d she sings almost all genres but she loves jazz she was introduced too it in part by her grandmother who is an artist from Iran, she won norway got talent when she was 7 years old its a good idea too check out those performances, she has over 120 covers on youtube and 3 songs that she made herself. I have read all the comments preceding this one. They cover most of the things I consider important but just two other things in which you may be interested. Between 0.25 and 0.28 you will see Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, who is a respected Iranian artist, and the person whointrodsuced Angelina to Jazz. the you will see that Angelina is holding a candle with a picture of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. My introduction to Angelina was on her first appearance at Norway's Got Talent and I didn't expect much from a 7 year old. Just a cute little girl, all nervous, rushing the song in parts, hesitating and then stumbling over or forgetting her words and generally acting her age and doing her best to get through a childish song like "Twinkle, twinkle little star". What did I see? Well, it was a seven year old child, with wild hair and gaps in her mouth, where there once were Baby teeth. And that was when the normal perception ended and things turned upside down. She confidently answered the questions put to her by a Judge. Declared she was going to sing a song by the legendary Billie Holiday. Gestured off stage for the technician to start the music and then started singing. The body of the 7 year old was still there but the voice wasn't. Or was itt? I was surprised then and that surprise is still with me, some six years later. I have followed her career since I saw that first video on KZfaq and in the six years she has been singing publicly she has mastered many musical genres, including Blues, Country, Disco, Jazz,Pop, R&B and Soul, EDM and Rock and covered songs first performed by many famous singers,like Adele, Whitney Houston, Nancy and Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lana del Ray, Gloria Gaynor, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and many others. What is more extraordinary is that she takes ownership of every song she sings while still paying respect to the original. You will notice that she never goes into unnecessary theatrics.
