Tiny Little Girl Our tiny little girl with the grownup voice was 17 on Jan. 10, 23 and is now 6'1" tall and could be a super model, but I hope the major portion of her career will be dedicated to her music and taking the world to a better place. I don't think she even realizes this power she holds over us and the need to hear that signature voice to fill that empty void within all of us. Angelina Jordan is in fact the "Benchmark" for all other vocalist to try as they might to achieve. I have a number of pictures of celebrities whose height is known, for example, Austin Butler, who played Elvis, is 6ft tall, and AJ published a picture of her standing next to him, she was at least 1 inch taller than him, and she had to look down at him.

Being a genius, she is able to compartmentalize every bit of songs she has ever heard in her life, and then has the ability to bring them forth vocally, which is especially helped by her being a true 'vocal chameleon', able to emulate the vocals of so many A-List singers. Her core is truly a blend of what she's learned from the two most unique jazz singers of all time, they being Billie Holiday (breathy, whisper-like) responses, and Amy Winehouse, who in addition to a unique way of 'slurring' words, she also would do these radical 'mid-sentence' key changes. Billie and Amy truly redefined the genre of jazz, and now Angelina has redefined it once more.

In many of Angelina's covers, she will pay tribute to the artists of the songs she covers. In this one, she is extending homage to Elvis. She also does her arrangements or, at least, has very much input into the way her music is done. In this case, she departed from Elvis by slowing the tune down and singing it in a way the lyrics actually ask for. Elvis made it a virtual pop "dance" tune even though the lyrics are a sad, emotional and heartbreaking tale of an impending breakup and lost love. Angelina sings the song as it should be performed. This was Elvis's last number one song. In this video she is dressed as Elvis was in his " '68 Comeback Special" TV program. Leather from top to bottom. Her hair is done up in a "bee hive" style that Elvis liked his wife Pricilla to wear. The red guitar is a contemporary Hagstrom reproduction of a 1967 Viking II. Elvis had borrowed it from Al Casey, one of the session musicians of the Comeback Special band. The original guitar recently sold at auction for over $660,000. The piano and mic are like the ones in the Sun studio in Memphis, where Elvis started his recording career. The piano player is Rob Christie, a studio exec at her label, Republic Records. The young girl(s), Angelina's relatives, are a nod to Elvis's and Pricilla's kid, Lisa Marie, may God love her soul. The last segment of the children shows Angelina's sister, Juliette, as a 9 year old Lisa Marie. That was how old Lisa was when her dad died. Many reactors guess that the children in this video denotes Angelina growing up, but all the symbolisms is about Elvis and not Angelina. There is a short segment of Angelina reposing on a couch. She is wearing what look like mismatched shoes. One is blue suede, yes? Many of the antique shop artifacts, particularly the old red fabric chair in the background seem "fit for a king". The artistic production may have been by her executive producer and grandmom, Mery Zamani. Mery is a well known artist from Iran who had her hand in other Angelina artwork, including the outfit Angelina wore on "AGT the Champions" show, and the artwork on Angelina's first original Republic video "Million Miles - lyrics version". With a little help from her friends (and family), Angelina is leaving a profound legacy in the world of music and art. She is "ASTAR", literally and figuratively.

I about jumped out of my skin when I first heard this cover. I couldn't agree more that Angelina and pianist/co-arranger Rob Christie have taken an old chestnut and grown it into a towering tree. I thought Angelina had changed the meter herself, but I went back to Elvis's version and he also changes to 3/4 for the bridge. I think Angelina's genius here is using that bridge to bookend the rest of the song, like an intro/outro. What a masterpiece! As you say, Christi, it changes the entire meaning of the song. Great reaction and analysis!
@rmcc42
@rmcc42 Жыл бұрын
First, Christi let me say that is a great reaction! Thou it is a female (little girl in some) covering a male's version, Angelina has from the first cover of an Elvis song she did, been able to show total respect; and yet bring out all the little things that I never realized were missing from Elvis's versions. I met Elvis when I was 13, and he was just getting started (YES, I am 80 years old!) From that day on there was never another artist that could take his place nor come close to giving me the feelings his voice did! That is until one day in 2014 and I happen to see/hear a video of a little 7 year old girl singing "Gloomy Sunday"! Yes it was a little girl, but there was a magic in her voice that I had had never seen nor heard before from any vocal artist! For nearly 9 years now there has been very, very few days that I have not had to have my daily dose if "Angelina"! Elvis has taken a back seat to her! And when she does one of his songs it is always very special, like the two had some special connection in a past life. With this cover of "Suspicious Minds", she has reached a new level of music genius and mastery that even she may have some problem ever topping.

WOW Christi, you really 'get' AJ- you really understand what she's all about. Of course, there's the music- but then there's the impact!- which is when words fail us. But you use words so well. She 'fillets your heart'- great expression And the last 2 minutes of this video really show how much you 'get' her. As you say, "she 'reinvents' the song. So why don't each one of us go out into the world and see what we can reinvent- whether it's the outer world or the inner world". Spot on PS You mentioned her 'pure soul'. The longer it remains untouched, the more unshakeable it will remain in the future. And her art is totally integrated with the purity of her soul.

Where Elvis cover (not an original either) is indeed upbeat and his showmanship is amazing. But indeed it does not have the gravitas of Angelina's version. As the song is sad and about a toxic relationship, a more heavy take us befitting. I agree it is incredible how she give old songs a fresh take. It's one of her time shifting abilities :-) She also makes you forget about time, het voice makes you believe she is 10-20 years older and she can take us back in the past and let us hear how music was made 40-60 years ago. Thanks for this analysis and break down!

Elvis sits on his cloud with some friends, discussing Angelina, "Angelina did a fine job there, don´t you think so, Michael?" Oh yes, she did it with my songs as well, she is a dear. Darlin, what you think?" A lady with dark skin smiles and says "Michael, I am her idol, in a way, how can I not be proud of her?" A mustachioed gentleman with a british accent means " That sweetheart is never boring!" "You are both right Billie and Freddie" the King says "and she guides the humans to a better world" Suddenly a gentleman with long hair and a beard stand beside them, smiling and says "That is why father and me sent her to Earth, she is realy one of our angels." Have a pleasant Sunday. Elmar from Germany.

Genius: Exceptional intellectual or creative power, the greatest musical genius of our time is Angelina Jordan. Can one be hypnotized by sound? Shamans use rhythmic drumming and chanting to achieve control over a mind. Angelina's is unique in that she has the ability to create audios that trigger your brains "frequency following response". She has the ability to create a euphoric addiction to her total being similar to drugs, but without the side effects, she is in fact, like nothing I have ever experienced in the past, or more than likely to in the future.

Loved the reaction, Christi! You may recognize the piano player here. It is Rob Christie, Republic Records Studio Director at Universal Music Group, and Angelina's mentor at Republic. Rob did the arrangement, or at least got the credit for it, but I'm quite certain Angelina had input into it. When you look and listen closely, you'll see more than just a wink to Elvis. She walks in wearing black leather like Elvis comeback show, with her hair in a beehive, like Pricilla, with a guitar that is the same make, model and color as the one Elvis used in that same comeback show. And all through the song, her voice sounded quite Elvis-like. Much like Elvis would have had had he been born female. I can't say for certain, but I believe you're right about the girls representing Angelina growing up. The first two are her manager's (Uncle Michael) daughters and the third one is Angelina's sister. The executive producer was her grandmother, Mery Zamani. This was a family affair and it was stunning. Oh by the way, I did see you on the podcast when it came out and thought you were wonderful. Thanks for the reaction.

Absolutely what I expected. She made this her own song and she did it beautifully. I noticed Juliet sitting there she is going to be as beautiful as Angelina one day. Elvis' version is great, and it still is one of my favorites. but Angelina's version is equally great and is definitely her own. When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 83 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched. Her phrasing in the last bridge is great. And she got Elvis’s ‘Oh Yea’ at the end of the song. The pianist is Rob Christie (3 Grammys), he is the head of the Republic Record department that is responsible for Angelina and other singers. The two small kids are her uncle Mike's kids, and the older girl is Angelina's sister. If you haven’t already reacted to her latest studio of Whitney Houston's version you should - here’s the link - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n75gmpxqz7SWZok.html 🙂

Love that the first word out of her mouth immediately got my attention and the soulful sounds were activating my emotional sensation. The baby, so cute, brought happiness and smiles then when each one changing in age brought memories in mind. In the mean time Angelina's soft and caring voice is encompassing not one but two story lines crossing each other as time loops from past, present to past again. The chorus definitely gave me Elvis vibes and the ending was a positive declaration intended to give confidence, a promise. Angelina speaks in melody form, It's amazing. This video is a compellation of two genius artists, Angelina's vocals and Meri's visual arts, with the support and production of Republic Records.

Great reaction and analysis Christi! Angelina just turned 17 in January! Also, she will be done with school, and her new album of new music is coming out later this year. In regards to the Elvis movie, Angelina was invited to a private screening of the movie and met the actor who played Elvis, Austin Butler, as well as meeting Priscilla Presley who was there as well. Her Grandma, Mery Zamani, helped produced this. She used the same store (Melrose Gallery) she used for her My Funny Valentine and I Have Nothing videos. Her sister Juliette was the older girl and the 2 younger girls are her Uncle Mike's kids. 2- time Grammy winner Rob Christie is on piano once again. He is also the music director of Republic Records, the music company she is signed with. The beehive hairstyle was to honor Priscilla Presley and the time period she met Elvis. The black suit and red guitar was a classic look for Elvis from his comeback concert. What a performance and homage to The King!

There have been a few, but singing ability aside I can't think of many teenagers with both the natural artistic inspiration and intellectual understanding of music theory that Angelina demonstrates. The only one I can think of who might have exceeded her in these respects is Dimash when he was younger as he is unearthly in all aspects of his musical production, although the resulting music from each of them is so radically different.

Thank you for returning to Angelina. Your reactions to her performances are always worth watching, and your analysis of this song is the best I have ever watched. The song was written by Mark James, an American singer/songwriter, who recorded it the year it was written. The best known version, however, was that done by Elvis Presley. It was his last No 1 song. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, Mark James is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." Other singers covering this song invariably base their performance on that of Elvis, in that it is very "upbeat". Angelina took a very different path in that she read and understood the lyrics and what Mark James intended when writing them . To my mind, her rendition is much truer to the emotions of the song. The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins Aurora (first) and then Athena - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family. Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. For me, that she started with the Bridge of the song is very significant and, I feel, very indicative of Angelina's "up front" transparency. She was declaring that it was important that their love did not die, and then carries on to say why she feels as she does. Others first say how they feel and then, almost as an afterthought, assure their love they don't want it to end. For me, it is whether I feel the singer is genuine about the situation and wishes it could be resolved or whether the singer understands the situation but thinks the blame is on her/his partner but feels the need to assure them they don't want it to end (until somebody else comes along).

Power & Pure Velvet Perfection! This vocal arrangement was all Angelina, I have no doubt in collaboration with a stellar team including Rob Christie & Mery Zamani her Grandmother. She is a Master Storyteller. The video is shot in the same Antique Store that she did 'My Funny Valentine' on Valentine’s Day. I believe it is in LA near her home. I believe the girls in the video represent Angelina's Journey from infancy to present through the classics of music history. Thus the Antique store, She grew up studying and performing these classics. That is Rob Christie on piano. Sister Juliette and a couple of Uncle Michael's Babies. I think that makes them cousins. Full Black Leather Bodysuit, the guitar from his concert in 68 and the hair a homage to Priscilla Presley. Yeah! She can bring tears to your eyes. I base my interpretation on my knowledge of Angelina's journey from an 18 month old little girl singing a "classic" of music history 'I Will Always Love You' . She has been listening to these classics on repeat on YOUTube since then under the guidance and inspiration of her Grandmother Mery Zamani. She has been performing these classics since her first time in studio at 6 yrs old.. She has continued this journey through her 1st introduction to the world with her "Classic'" 'Gloomy Sunday’ and following with her many performances at her many Jazz Festivals, TV performances, Concerts, and charity events, studio recordings and practice sessions at home accompanied or not. The location in the Antique store represents these classics (like the furniture) of another era. To me she portrays wonder at all these classics surrounding her as she has travelled this road. Her tribute to Elvis is at her present age, today, each stage represented by her cousins and sister and ending with Angelina herself on the couch still admiring all this history surrounding her. The beautiful rendition of the song, and other tributes are in the leather outfit, Guitar and hair a tribute to Priscilla. Just my interpretation but it makes the most sense to me. ♥👣👸🏻

My interpretation of the symbolism of this music video: First, and foremost; Angelina Jordan at 16 is the epitome of a Storytelling ARTIST, and she has the ability to take us by the hand and lead us down an imaginary path that we visualize as reality. The remarkable fact is that we experience this in each of her performances. In this video we see her as a married woman in her mid to late 20s. As the video starts out, we see dishes, and it is a symbol of a home. As AJ sings the phrase “Were caught in a trap, I can’t walk out” we see 3 small children, this to me is a marriage where the children come first. If it were AJ by herself, she would not stay in a relation without trust.

"we see dishes, and it is a symbol of a home" hmmm... food for thought on that one. That caught in a trap idea does play out when children are in the middle of a divorce. Keep up the sharp comments Larry.

@@charliemiller5831 This music video was directed by Cole McCarthy, and he is known for symbolizing the song rather than the performer. The symbolism is to make one feel the words being sung. Let's analyze this; this song is not about Angelina Jordan, she is not caught in a trap she can’t get out of, this is about an individual that is in a marriage with children, and that is the “TRAP”. For that reason, she can’t leave for the children’s sake. This video was a short movie with an actress playing a part that must be believable to make the movie work. Another example: Cole McCarthy directed the AJ’s performance of the song “Yesterday”, by the Beatles, and the phrase in the song “Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away, now there here to stay”, and AJ is shown in a basket. Cole was symbolizing that this woman was a “basket case”, and down in the dumps because of a broken relationship. Again, she is playing a part, this is not about her. Thanks for the reply!

Angelina’s and pianist, Rob Christie’s arrangements of this song are what writer, Mark James had in mind when he wrote the song. Mr. James performed the song, but never got the response he hoped for. He gave Elvis the right to perform it and of course it became famous. However, Mr. James was not a fan of Elvis’ uptempo pop arrangement. I’m sure that he loved this stunning arrangement. Angelina created the vocal arrangement and pianist, Rob Christie wrote the music arrangement.

Angelina Jordan opens up the truth in this song. Here there is a lot of compassion for all parties in the story laid open. Such a common human experience, the issue of trust, what keeps it, what destroys it, whether it can be healed. Even Elvis slowed this bridge portion of the song. But he was hiding the pain of the matter under a party vibe. She sings it more like the author intended, I'm told. I couldn't stop listening to this when it first dropped. All of the innuendo in the visuals, like the dishes at the very beginning. Everything very purposeful. What you mean is they are not sexualizing her. Yes, the Angelina Jordan growing up and moving toward adulthood. Yes, to that Elvis sound nod. Wow. I love how you point out what she has done with the timing. Christi, this is perhaps the best reaction of this song/video that I have heard. I'm so impressed that I've saved it. I usually only save her actual videos, but I want to reference your incredible understanding again. Thank you so much---I learned something about listening today. Angelina is always taking things up a notch and this in no exception. heard it many times with reactors and it brings tears every time. I have watched this performance many times doing various reactors post . One of them mentioned all the plethora of symbolisms Angelina and her Grandmother Merry had in this video. They are both extremely artistically creative. I had only noticed up until then only the trappings that reflected the tribute to Elvis and his '68 come back tour. However after that comment I began to see things in the lyrics that, whether on purpose or just providence, that were quite astounding. The four scenes of the little girls all wearing the white dresses, some say are a metaphor of Angelina's rise to stardom and the fulfillment of her life time dreams as a very small child, of which she has fulfilled 99% them quite quickly in her short time here and I quite agree with that observation. But I began to notice something in the words of the song as each scene of the little girls in white dresses girls were shown, which was seemingly planned by some one for sure. The first one, a very small baby sitting in a big chair in which she no doubt could not get out on her own and she was grabbing something with her left hand that looked like some kind of restraint to hold her down from falling out . The lyrics sung for this scene was, " Caught in a trap" The next one shows a little older girl whom evidently who just learned to walk and was kind of unsure of her steps walking and the lyrics sung " I cant walk out ". Then the next one shows the little girl spinning around and kind of looking around and the lyrics " Why can't you see what you are doing to me" . Then the scene changes to show a little older girl going around with her head up and looking around, you can see her hair is not as curly as the previous little girl who spinning around before. ( P.S. this third girl turning around and looking up may have well been her little sister whom was sitting in the chair at the end of these scenes). Then there is the much older little girl (her sister) in a white dress again sitting in a chair as the baby was in then first scene , she was looking down and raised her head as the lyrics said, "when you don't believe a word I say" and then she raises her head with a smile as if to say with a look I don't believe what you say. Angelina and her Grandmother are Rembrandt's of video and and Angelina of vocal artistry .

Kudos all around on this one, to you, to the commenters and of course to Angelina herself. She makes amazing creative choices with her voice. We know she can hold a note for days, yet in some lines she takes several audible breaths, which in turn conveys emotion. She inserts vocal fry into the middle of words, like "together". Throughout the song her voice vacillates between powerful and breathy within single phrases. She conveys uncertainty, a struggle. You can hear Elvis's nasal tone, especially noticeable towards the end. Another effect of the children for me was to portray the high stakes, that children are precious and jealousy in a relationship can destroy the family that protects them. 👍👏🔥💓
