Still Wakes the Deep Review "Buy, Wait for Sale, Gamepass or pass"
STILL WAKES THE DEEP is a return to the first-person narrative horror genre for The Chinese Room, creator of critically acclaimed games such as Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, and Dear Esther.
You are an offshore oil rig worker, fighting for your life through a vicious storm, perilous surroundings, and the dark, freezing North Sea waters. All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard.

You should maybe shed some light on GamePass having an inferior version of this game compared to Steam and Epic. You are one of the most respected reviewers out there - it might put some pressure on Xbox to find a fix for this issue which has affected quite a few games now. How can you get excited for new Day One games that have features like DLSS/FSR and FOV etc removed?

A rare instance of the walking sim/horror game that actually has fully modelled, voiced and animated NPCs. That alone is enough to sell me on this type of game. Really refreshing to see. So tired of the decades of these types of games where everyone's already dead/missing, and you're the lone survivor. Will definitely check it out when I get the chance.

Unfortunately, the NPCs look like they are from a ps2 game( and parts of the environment). I think this game would be an all-time great if it had a consistent visual appearance. This is a game that is clearly limited by the budget and in certain scenes looks great but the lack of consistency in the visuals and side npcs really takes away from the emersion in the game and story. Some in game interactive cutscenes look like UE5 level models and animation, but the majority look terrible in comparison. Personally, it was very immersion breaking. I think they should have just lowered the overall graphics/ fidelity to stay consistent. At the same time, even when this game does have graphically impressive scenes, they still are not at say Alan Wake 2 level. All that being said, I think if this game had AAA visual production values it would be amazing. The story, pacing, voice acting, and level design are all great. Edit: the performance on a good pc with a 3080TI is not good. 50-60 fps at 2k with no DLSS

I don't understand the part about replayability. You replay a game because you want to relive the experience/story again. No need for things in the game to change, although it's a nice plus (personally though, i tend to make the same choices, if i liked how my previous playthrough felt, that's the reason i replay it after all). It's like with a movie - you watch it again, because you want to experience it again, maybe a year later.
@ProjectPhoenix21
@ProjectPhoenix21 2 ай бұрын
This generation of games usually want that kind of replayability where things play out differently or you can go back and collect things you’ve missed. I’m with you though, I grew up playing video games over and over and over again almost exactly the same just for the experience. My favorite game of all time is Shadow of the Colossus and there is a very, very limited ways to play that game, or to mention once you e experienced the game once, that’s it, you’ll never have that same level of wonder again. But I still love it to death and have replayed it, along with its remaster and remake countless times. But I like that ACG points out that you aren’t exactly getting a multiple choice, save certain characters, multiple endings type of deal here. It’s transparent and it helps some people make their choice. I will most likely give the game another go in the future. The setting and atmosphere were fantastic.

Yah not every game needs to be infintly replayable. Personally I prefer to finish something and then move on with my life, I don't need to put 1000 hours into every game I play.

If Chinese Room could combine its obvious talent for immersion, writing, detail and voice work with the gameplay and exploration of something like an Alien Isolation then we would have game of the year contenders. The almost brutal realism of this game just adds to the horror and some scenes are genuinely disturbing and not in that "fun" horror way. You can clearly see the influence of Carpenters The Thing with the body horror but also with the tension, banter and the isolation.

Really curious how this was developed alongside Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2. Did they make most of this before taking on the job or did development start after? What I did not quite get is: are there chase sequences, just like in Layers of Fear 2 or are you hunted like in Alien isolation? Are you required to hide from monsters otherwise it's game over? Because that's not what I would associate with a walking sim, as I'm thinking more of LoF1, Firewatch, Dear Esther, rachel foster, etc. But if you're just losing characters to monsters, just as in something like The Quarry, that would be pretty cool. Would be nice if someone could enlighten me on that

Just finished the game, you do “hide” from the monsters but it felt more like a safe zone in a game of tag. Haven’t played the quarry, but if it’s like until dawn, it’s less of having a set group of characters that get picked off and more like going around the rig and seeing/meeting survivors and having them die or have them already dead, but you do have a brief pre-disaster part where your character interacts with others where you somewhat get to know them, at least by name.

For me, this wasn't so much a game as an interactive movie. And it that context it was one of the most immersive, suspenseful and touching experiences I've had in 45 years of game-play. Uniquely in my view, the voice acting, script, sound and graphics are all very, very strong; no weaknesses, no single one letting the others down. And the attention to detail.. that just blew my mind away. Hardened horror gamers won't be hugely impressed, nor will preferrers of more open-world, choice-driven games. But then again, this isn't a game. It's an experience, and an absolutely top shelf one at that.

I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was, a great ocean horror movie that I got to experience. My BIGGEST complaint though is the state of that f***ing oil rig at the start lol. I thought it was bordering on mediocre. It looks and sounds good, but even in those aspects, there are issues. The story was weak due to how cliche it was, and how it doesn't give you a lot to care about the characters. The voice work was excellent, but the writing was poor because of how repetitive, unoriginal, and, at times, melodramatic it was (with the music only worsening it). I generally don't mind if a horror game isn't scary, but this game had zero scare factor, be it tenseness or even jump scares. You're also always walking or running linearly through the game with minimal chance to go off the beaten path and you rarely collect anything to expand on the story or characters. It's pretty much just climbing, jumping, some swimming, shimmying, hitting switches, and throwing items to the opposite end of a room to divert an enemy's attention so you can move on with several short bursts of running toward a door or access point to get away from them. I also thought it was weird how many loading points there were to enter a new area. Not that the loading was long, but it felt jarring like it didn't belong in this generation of gaming. The enemy design is cool and grotesque, but we've seen it before. The story felt as if it was written by a middle-of-the-road high school student. This was also probably the worst game where the story relies on your character continuously being asked to do every single job because another character can't. Throughout, your interactions with characters are mostly "Hey, I need you to go do this" and your guy saying, "Ah, feck!" Why me? You do it! I ain't doing it!" Then they say "You have to!" And you go do it. Many will want subtitles, and take note that they don't match the slang/lingo spoken, which I found interesting. I somehow got an achievement for not sprinting more than ten times throughout the game, but I know that can't be true.

I'm afraid, no money in the world would elevate the quality as its biggest flaw is the plot and the storytelling. Sure, garaphics and gameplay can always be better, but what i actually missed was narrative tension. I did not feel entirely invested emotionally.
@LinguineTortellini
@LinguineTortellini Ай бұрын
@@potatopower7893 Honestly the plot seemed to be one of it’s biggest strenghts the game had. It’s what kept me playing. The dialogue and amazing delivery from the VAs sold it for me, they’re what got me invested. It seemed like a lot of people agreed with that sentiment, atleast from what I heard. But hey, thats your opinion and your entitled to it.
@potatopower7893
@potatopower7893 Ай бұрын
@@LinguineTortellini the setting, the plot IDEA and the technical execution are great. Was the major selling point for me. But what i meant with weak plot was rather the lacking narrative development. After encountering the "thing" / the enemies for the first time, the suspense kept dropping more and more. No real surprises or ideas, we didn't already see in other similar games, that grabbed me stronger. No bad game at all, just increasingly underwhelming towards the end.

@@potatopower7893 Nah I totally get what you mean. There a lot they could’ve done to shake things up or raise the stakes. I honestly was starting to lose interest by the end, but the ending made it worth it for me cus I thought it tied things together really well. It’s nothing unique, like you said we’ve seen this all in other horror games before. But I think for what it is, It’s a pretty solid narrative in a game that goes on for just like an hour too long.

Way too many games on the backburner to pick this up at the moment. Would be nice to evolve the walking sim genre a bit at this point. A neat mechanic, light gunplay, or making choices that matter would all go a long way to engage the player. Walking from point A to point C then to B for a scripted moment to occur and have this repeat for 10 hours just doesn't cut it anymore for me.

There was a series not long ago called The Rig with a similar premise, but it could not keep up the atmosphere more than 3-4 episodes before drowning into the sea of mediocricity. This game looks like what that series could have been.

I’m about 90 mins so far and really enjoying it. The location and story are excellent - and it’s refreshing to have a cast of Scottish characters. Horror is great too, the only minor complaints are the navigation and the fact that Caz runs and jumps like an improv actor on meth.
