🇹🇷 Ani… Ruins of a vast medieval Armenian city, scattered on the Turkey-Armenia border in Kars Province. Often called the “City of 1001 Churches”, Ani was one of the most important hubs of the ancient world, but now, it is an ancient ghost town in Turkey’s far east.
In this Eastern Turkey travel video, we spend a day in this UNESCO World Heritage Site and explore the historic ruins. We hit off the beaten path and hike down to ground zero on the border to explore the Virgin’s Monastery, a 900-year-old site that most visitors don’t know about.
We also stop by the Tigran Honents Church, which is the only structure in Ani Archeological Site that contains well-preserved frescoes and wall paintings.
Stay in tune for part 2! We will hike to the furthest point of the Turkish soil and see an ancient church on top of a steep hill, located in a restricted military zone. Also, we’ll have an interesting encounter with local shepherds. Coming soon!
