This is my review of the movie, Anikulapo, the latest historical epic by acclaimed Nigerian director, Kunle Afolayan. The film tells the story of a man that gains the ability to bring the dead back to life, and how he quickly grew into infamy afterward. In this review, I share my thoughts on the movie and why I think it left a lot to be desired. I agree with your review especially where you said the main character lacked any redeeming qualities that would have endeared us to him, so literally I couldn't root for him or connect with him. It's strange when you're happy something bad happens to the protagonist because you feel they deserve it. His hubris overwhelmed him in a manner that drew little to no sympathy from us.

@@chinelosynclaire7483 Precisely! The movie needed to make us care about the lead but totally gave us no reason to do so.

For a long time now, I hadn't found a Nollywood movie worthy to watch the second time, but I've watched Anikulapo 3 times now. Anikulapo, for me, is a masterpiece!

I absolutely loved this movie. This is a magnum opus for kunle afolayan. He has brought Yoruba culture and story to the world. The art direction, costume, casting, cinematography, sound, acting and dialogue was superb. The camera work, particularly at night was Hollywood standard. Great movie

Glad you enjoyed the movie a lot more than I did! And yeah, the cinematography and overall production were certainly a class above the typical Nollywood film.

@@michaelabayomi money well spent in my view. Yes I had some questions. Why wasn't more time expended on the mystery bird? Why didn't the bird come back for the gourd that fell down? How come the gourd worked without checking if the person deserved to return to life or not ? How many times in total can a person be resurrected? Apart from these questions, flawless from me

Thank you!!!!! The cinematography was okay. Storytelling lacked everything I expected. I don't know where to begin. I actually didn't complete the movie because I didn't where the story was leading after Saro was resurrected, I thought the part where the mystical bird lost its power wasn't logical at all. It's at this point I lost interest. Kunle should limit how much he features himself in his movies (my personal thought😁)

I'm actually tired of seeing great cinematography, great set, great production value and the a very poor story telling.. truthfully all of these stories had to potential to be a really compelling story but the writers we have don't pay attention to the fundamentals of story structuring, and the excuse I hear is, following a story structure makes you story a cliché, but now bad story telling has become the Nigerian cliché

I feel you were quite harsh on your criticism I have been watching movies for a long time and my portfolio of films cross different budget, countries etc . I feel strongly about this film I actually thing it warrants an international platform. Your score of 5 is unwarranted

I honestly believe that 5/10 is a generous score, given all the issues I had with its character development and the overall execution of its story. I'm curious to know what score you would've awarded the film yourself though, but definitely happy to learn that you came out of it feeling as strongly as you did. 😇

Oh well, I don't usually drop reviews but would like to comment on the language. I started the film with the English voice over, few minutes into the film it felt disconnected. I don't speak Yoruba but I'm of the opinion that the Yoruba language was not a challenge! Thumbs up to Kunle for allowing Non yorubas to enjoy a Yoruba based film. So it's overall praise that I can enjoy a Yoruba based film than the overall critic Abayomi has given..

But Abayomi really???...5/10???.... I am glad that you said "your own opinion" but on a more serious note, you didn't pay attention to some details in this movie though.... I hardly watch Naija movie yoruba for that matter but this Anikulapo is epic....it supercede Naija standard for real.... the costume, the settings....I grew up in the village bro... and for them to pull this off....it is beyond commendable

I'm glad to hear you found the movie epic, Tony. To be fair, I didn't say it was not to be commended for those aspects. I hardly watch Nigerian movies too by the way, so I guess we have that in common. 😇 That said, I still believe that every film needs to nail down the basics of storytelling, regardless of its country of origin. And having great costumes or a well-realized setting does not make up for a weak story and one-dimensional characters, at least in my opinion. 😉

@@temitopeoyin7307 The purpose of the review is not to dissuade anyone from watching the movie though. After all, it's all subjective and what worked for one person might not necessarily work for another. At the end of the day, we all want the movies we watch to be great and worthwhile, and the only way I think we can ensure these filmmakers continue to improve their craft is by offering constructive criticism. 😇

Trust me, there's nothing interesting about your reviewed, you said, Its one way story but you forget how massive it promotes culture, enhancing more of it reality etymologically, traceable to Yoruba original ways of believes, those who knew the insight of the story line and never stop knowing what it takes to put contents together and create mysteries out of it.
@michaelabayomi
@michaelabayomi Жыл бұрын
I see what you're getting at. But I'm sure you'd agree that promoting culture shouldn't come at the expense of being entertaining and telling a worthwhile story. I mean, just look at Black Panther and The Woman King. Those films stand out because, at their core, they still managed to tell engaging stories populated by intriguing characters, not just because they served as a showcase for African culture.

You absolutely don't need Alll the money in the world in order to tell a good story....you are right I was expecting more..I noticed the use of modern underwear customs such as bra and short leggings in the wives dressing...thats absolutely wrong. The editing wasn't properly done to get rid of such scenes. And it's predictive in nature there weren't enough intense moment..the story line was one way , Yoruba language spoken is good but it was too flat there weren't enough adage and heavy meaning of Yoruba language spoken, the communication was too direct and simple not enough wisdom word spoken However the settings si fine
