Altruism, an act that bestows a benefit on the recipient while conferring a cost to the actor, is one of the central paradoxes of evolution. In the wild, where only the fittest survive, adopting other animals' offspring is not really in line with Darwin's theory of evolution. And yet, amongst bees, dolphins, lions and several primate species, altruism may go as far as adoption.

The gosling are amazing. My daughter once brough home s duck from the farm supply. They were having a big sale and if you spent so much you got a free goose, chicken or bunny. Her uncle purchased horse food and was given his choice. He let her choose a duck. Still with its baby down feathers. That goose followed her every where. He waited on the school bus and would not allow any other animals near to her. She was his girl. Of course in the mornings when i drove them to school he had to be there and cause a scene when she left. It was hilarious. She had a little harnass she taught him to walk with and wouldnt let anyone near his girl. He was a mess. I was scared to death of him. Lol

Wow .. 1st comment.... And there is SOO much to say... There is so much that could be said about wether or not you consider humans to be animals .. or animals to have human-ish characteristics. There are multiple examples, across ALL species, of "foster" or "adoptive" parents. This documentary so perfectly illustrates this. What I have questions about, is what happens when you, the human, have to let the baby grow up and "leave the nest".? I once had a baby bird that fell out of the nest.. I found a very small bird, with a very obvious broken leg. He was sorta just flopping around on the ground when I found him, couldn't walk, couldn't fly. Took him home, put a toothpick splint on his leg, fed him mealworms with tweezers, and named him Tweety. He grew and healed and eventually he was a wild bird that lived in my house. So, I decided to let Tweety decide for himself if he wanted to stay or go. This was after taking care of him for months. It took 3 days.. for 3 days, I would open the window and we would sit there. And he hopped back and forth.. he would fly/ flutter/ go outside, then come back in, back out, etc... Then gone. I look at it as nature. He was a baby fledgling when I found him, and once he was able, he returned to nature to live his natural life. I provided love, care, healing and babysitting for 6 months. But, I let him go and he left the nest... Maybe he found someone else to care for him.... Maybe it's the human in me, but I wish he could come back and say "thanks" or "I remember you" or "love you, miss you" ... I know, I'm a dumb human....

Humans are primates, are mammals, and thus of course are animals. That is basic zoology/biology.

You’re not dumb at all, I would feel the same way. I’ve taken care of many stray cats & sometimes I wish they would acknowledge me a bit more than just a free meal. We just have to accept that that is not how they think, they’re not sentimental (for lack of a better word), you did a great thing tho, raising the bird & taking care of it like that; that was a very sweet thing to do. I’m sure the animals are thankful, but since they can’t talk, they just have their own ways of expressing it! Take care from one animal lover to another! 🤗🤗🤗

The misrepresentation of the theorie of evolution is baffling. The theorie shows how genes diversify. It has nothing to do with what individual animals do.
