Honestly, I live in the South and have seen crows my entire life and thought they were only scavengers. I didn't know they were also predators. Oh my word.. this is a revelation. I'm 60 years old...how did I not know this?!?!

I’m in South Carolina and I saw a crow pull a baby bird out of one of our blue bird boxes. I was horrified! I didn’t realize they would do that! 😡

The crow was watching for a chance. It doesn't circle over head as the hawks and casting a shadow. This is why there was no warning sounds from the chickens

Rachel, that was a momma mole. They get dang near as big as a guinea pig except they can go really flat. The reason I know is because Lucy used to catch them. The little ones the cats have been bringing to the porch are BABIES.

Hey Kevin, Yep Crows are hunters as well as carrion eaters. Just this spring I've seen a crow attack a Blue Jay nest and take two babies out of it. The Blue Jays went after the crow like crazy but couldn't save their chicks. I've also seen three crows gang attack a rabbit and her four babies. They got two of those babies and momma bunny was trying to chase them down and kick the living daylights out of them. It didn't work as two crows ganged up on the babies while the third one lured momma bunny away. I've also seen a crow stalk a mouse or vole under the snow. It watched from a tree as the vole ran across the snow and then dived into the snow to tunnel for grass. The crow flew down and started to follow the tunneling vole in the snow...when the vole came back up, it grabbed the vole. They are wicked smart birds.

I love the pop culture you have in almost all of your videos relating to movies. I think that was a TREMOR and it creeped me out. Black Betty is a good Momma protecting all the babies. Good Job Kev and Rachel!!!!!

I live in the OC, Southern California, and we have both wild parrots and crows. They are at war so we hear some loud "discussions" over territory. I've never seen violence or murder, lol.

I have seen crows attacking a nest box and stealing recently hatched baby birds, and I have seen them also attacking and cracking and eating eggs in a bird nest. I have never seen one take a baby chicken chick, but I am not around chickens. I am sad that one of the hens lost her chick to the crow, but I am so glad it was not one of Betty's chicks. She is a fierce and protective Mama.

When predators know where food is they keep coming back and bring others. Here where i'm at there are too many fllying predators .All my neighbors have lost their chickens to flying predators- i keep mine under hardwire and wood canopies when out the coop

when I lived in Seattle I watched the crows chase adult squirrels out of the cemetery next to my home straight into 5 o'clock traffic. let the cars kill their food. blew me away the first time I saw it. yes you need to keep those chicks locked up. First round of chicks we had all survived but we didn't let them out of the pen till they were close to 6months. We have a pair of hawks living in one if our trees. The next year I was away and they lasted 2 weeks without being locked up.

I’ve never seen a crow grab any kind of baby either! That’s just crazy! I don’t think anything would be gutsy enough to face Betty though; she’s one tough chicken broad! 😂 God bless y’all! ❤️

I have seen Crows pick off smaller birds out of the sky, especially when it is hatching season for them. They tend to lean towards meat/protein during that time seeing they are omnivorous. I hope you do not mind a suggestion, this is something we did for our chickens and their hatchlings, putting up a skull in clear sight(a bulls skull is what we used) can detour most avian predators. We also put up a Scarecrow in the middle of their pasture which allowed the chicks to freerange.

I get it, its life and Im sure that probably that crow was just trying to feed her babies, but that still doesn't make it feel any better. In NY almost every one raising chickens seem to have some type of protection over the fence to keep predators from getting the chickens/chick's. Very common practice from what I've seen.

Crows and hawks each have a different flight pattern. The chickens (especially a roo) keep an eye cocked toward the sky. One of their eyes have a long range vision that is used to watch the sky. Watch a roo for a little while. You will see the roo turn his head funny...and you will see that he is watching the sky with that eye on that side of their head. A hawk has more of a soaring, circular pattern. I've seen crows do it but they glide and have a straighter pattern...like from a barn to a tree

I sure hope Black Betty stays in the tractor to keep her chicks safe! Rachel, over the last couple of years we've had some pretty large moles digging tunnels all through the yard, along the foundation and driveway. I read that they are where the grubs are as it's their predominant food source. In a flower bed I worked this spring, I dug into a tunnel that was about 4" in diameter. That thing had to be huge! They eat the grubs as they tunnel. I had to knock down the tunnels as I mowed so I wouldn't break an ankle! I haven't seen any new ones this summer so hopefully they moved to the pasture. So sad about the one chick. I wonder if the crow had tried to take one of Betty 's but couldn't so it went after the lone chick being raised by the other hen? Might be something to be said about that saying "There's safety in numbers. " Hopefully the chicks will be safe in the chicken tractor.

Many years ago, I worked at a shop, next to a busy street. Cars were moving both ways pretty fast, and a sparrow flew down, too low. It got clipped by a car and dropped on the double yellow line. Less than a second after the bird hit the road, a crow swooped in snatched it up and flew up on our roof. I could see the sparrows feet kicking.

That's so insane but crows are so aggressive as far as hunting they are very smart birds. I actually saw a crow trying to attack a mama rabbits babies and that mama rabbit attacked back and saved her baby but that Crow was trying to get a baby that's bigger than a chick so they're fierceless. Is there anyway that you can put her up until those chicks are too big to be picked up by those crows? I know you guys want to do everything as natural as possible but also in protecting your baby chicks you're actually ensuring future generations of chickens in your homestead. It stinks when a crow takes that away from you and your homestead. The same with Hawks. We have Hawks here like crazy and they don't care what time of day they attack. I had a pumpkin patch this was last year I had a pumpkin patch that had pretty much taken over the back balcony and I had a lot of rabbits and they never harassed Rodger the rabbit ever bother any of the pumpkins but a hawk came down after one of those rabbits. I went outside and I have as a trophy one of the very large feathers that came off of that Hawk because she must have collided with my wrought-iron chair that was being shielded LOL by some of the pumpkin leaves. Can you put a tarp over that chicken tractor??

Wow, that's crazy.. never heard about a crow doing that... since that top is messed up on the chicken tractor, why not place 2 cinder blocks in there spaced apart and place a plank of wood on them so the chickens can run and hide up under that board. Who knows maybe something like that so they can get under it. But back to the question.. I've never even thought a crow would do that. ❤️❤️

I have never heard of a crow doing this. Good idea putting black Betty and babies in the chicken hut. You can only do so much to protect your babies from the predators and I think you are doing an awesome job. So sad for that little chick though.

I saw one a couple weeks ago take a squirrel. Squirrel screaming as the crow flew away with it. For hawks and our chickens we made A frames with some pallets and placed them strategically around the yard so they can run for cover if needed. Sometimes they like to just lay down under them.

When we lived in GA for 20yrs on our farm, my husband made a portable chicken pen 10ft by 6ft out of PVC and chicken wire fence; it looked like a small A-frame house with a cross beam so 6 wheels. It was light enough for me to push around the farm so allowed me to move it every couple of days to thatch and fertilize the ground for better grass and garden area. It also allowed the chickens and their babies to be safe from preditors but stay outdoors and they loved it. 🙂

Crows are vicious!!! We had crows that would attack the kids when they would walk to school. Glad to see the mom and babies are safe and sound:)

I have 3 crows here. I have seen the crows go after the Hawks . I have a broody hen now when they hatch I half to keep them in a safe place. I am sure that Justin Rhodes had some attacking his meat birds . That's how I knew crows will get them.

After years of raising chickens I can attest to the fact that the babies will fall prey to crows ... as will ducklings. It is the only thing I dislike about crows. They will also scavenge ... which can be a plus if we're talking worms, etc.

Lester from IMASS tested his ostriches before they had feathers his vet did spot blood test not sure if same for emus though would of thought so just a thought as Kevin you mentioned you wanted to know what sex they were. I do know when we were trying to seed the lawn the crows kept coming and eating the darn seed so we tried putting fake rubber snakes all over the yard to deter the crows and we came back out the next morning and every single fake snake was gone. Those darn things love them!

Love you videos! Here in Colorado I constantly have crows going after my younger chickens an they will pull baby rabbits out of cages, they are horrible an so smart! They learn your schedule an they will take advantage of it! I have way more issues with aerial predator than anything! I love an want to continue free range but it's hard when you loose so many! Skunks are #2!

Seems like the white birds are always the first to be attacked. Being as your pasture is so open, maybe setting up a few places the chickens can hide under will help? Good luck!

We've got our dogs, Anatolian/Great Pyrennies crosses, trained to watch for hawks and other big birds. Crows haven't been a problem but then again, we keep our chicks in a "nursery pen" until they are of sufficient size.

I saw two crows team up on a three foot black snake. They grabbed it out of my creek and threw it into the field. They killed it together. Then I watched them eat it. The crows were with there flock of about 30. But the two that killed it would not let the other crows have any of it. I watched all of this for about a half hour from my kitchen window. I'm from Pennsylvania. Love your channel.

I live in an urban area and I recently saw a crow empty a robins' nest of babies which was on the side of my neighbour's house. On the plus side the crows always send out the alarm when the Cooper hawks come. My 3 chickens hide and the whole neighbourhood goes quiet, not a bird noise anywhere. When the hawks leave a cardinal will sing the all clear and all the birds started singing again.

It’s always hard to decide if you let nature take control or intervene. I had a duck hatch 9 ducklings and I’m trying to just let her take care of them but my son keeps panicking because she sometimes leaves them and if they can’t keep up she doesn’t care. I tried to keep them in but she found a way out ugh But that’s crazy about the crow, they actually scare hawks away but I do know they eat turtles.

I have seen crows take eggs and new hatchlings but never a fledgling , now for a raven, they would probably take a fledgling. It's all a part of nature , farming and life of animals in general. I was told by my grandfather that the reason chickens hatch out so many babies is that they know that not all will survive the journey to adulthood. And when they lose a few their others have a fighting chance. Also I think the moving soil was either a rat or a vole , we have voles here that are big , way bigger than a common field mouse. With the rottening hay it's a perfect place for rats or voles and other rodents to thrive. Good video guys.

Crows are smart. I walked my 150 acres in western New York every day, and there was one crow who would see me as I rounded the corner of our field and caw three times. By the time I got to the back of the field he would swoop me at full speed. I went out with my father and warned him about it but he didn't believe me. Sure enough, as we rounded the corner I heard the three calls. Ten minutes later my dad almost shat himself when the crow dive bombed him! I left peanuts and other things for that Crow, to this day I swear he recognized me.

I’m so glad you put the mama and the chicks in the tractor because at least we know the crow won’t fly in there even though the fabric has been torn. If you can find a way to get some of those bigger holes brought together either was a staple gun or some duct tape something that helps those bigger areas come together so any rodents or anything while it will be to toured…Especially in the night time!! I want to tell you that I was out in my flower garden outback one night when I heard the most eerie sound I’ve ever heard and I’ve never forgotten it. It really sounded like a small child crying and screaming at the same time and when I looked up big black crow like I’ve never seen before had a baby bunny it’s beak. A mother rabbit had the habit of building her nest under my hosta plants and they had gotten big enough that they were just beginning to move around in the nest and explore out from under the leaves! That crow came down so swiftly and grab that baby bunny I mean it couldn’t of been more than 10 days to 14 days old and the mother had just gone out to eat after nursing and she wasn’t more than 10 feet away at the most when that hawk swiftly grabbed her baby and is the sound that came in as a baby rabbit was horrible I mean horrible and I’ve never forgotten it. I couldn’t believe that bird could carry that bunny but it did it sit on the wire for a bit letting it scream and screech and everybody in the block was outback listening to it and watching it and then it finally flew off. I’m sure it’s like you said, they take it home to their babies in the nest and feed it but it was horrible and that’s all I’ve got to say about that. Don’t think for a minute those black birds that come in many different sizes, won’t attack baby ducks and geese and so forth on your farm so my advice is put them in tractors till they’re much bigger because I think the animals right now or hungry and we have droughts going on and we’ve had a lot of storms that have come in and ruined natural habitats so just as we are fighting financially I think the animals are fighting for food. That’s my theory. I think you also need to get a bigger shovel and dig out where you saw that earth move because you need to know it is, And maybe put some poison pellets down it’s holes or tunnels, beefore it starts attacking your animals!!!!! It’s what we had to do in Kansas and Oklahoma for sure!!

I get both fascinated and heartbroken watching the grackles (type of crow, I think) use their beaks to dig up the turtle eggs and fly off with an egg in their beak. They keep coming back for more until the eggs are gone. Those turtle mamas work so hard to dig a hole, lay the eggs, and then work to cover them all up that I just hate to see those egg predator grackles. We regularly see turtle mamas laying eggs in holes against our chain link fence about once a month.

I had a crow go after my 5 lb. yorkie... she was running all out when I came out the door and made it to the porch. That crow stuck around for days. I had to go out with her. So yeah, a crow will go after whatever it thinks it can.

I've seen large crows take baby birds from other birds nests and I have seen them pick up small chipmunks . Sorry for the loss of the baby chick .

I've seen crows steal baby squirrels from their nest ,but never chicks.

Do you have any canvas tarps? That might be a temporary solution. Or s9me sort of blanket or covering.

Crows get lots of song bird babies. Have seen it many times. I have seen them kill a squirrel and a raccoon. They feast on frogs, toads,, and lizards. I have trained my dogs to run them off. Protected as songbirds and migratory species.

I've seen crows hunting mice, snakes, ground squirrels, mallard duck chicks and other baby birds.

Saw a TikTok short where 2 crows were trying to tag team a Momma duck so they could steal her babies. Was shocked. Guess I always thought crows were garbage cleaners and only ate road kill. Hope you can safeguard the rest of your baby chicks. Sometimes things like that happen so quickly you really have no time to prevent it. Thanks for sharing!

I’m in Florida. I’ve had crows steal my eggs and now and then take chicks. They prefer white. The jays and mockingbirds chase them.

The word got around about the crow and they are not leaving home! God Bless!

I usually only see crows carry off or eat already dead animals like roadkill. Had one pick up a dead mouse in my back yard before I had a chance to remove it. I was grateful for that. One learns something new every day and I'll have to be more observant watching them in my back yard and neighborhood. They are a great alert system for sure.
