Cloning creates a genetically identical copy of an animal or plant. Many animals - including frogs, mice, sheep, and cows - had been cloned before Dolly. Plants are often cloned - when you take a cutting, you are producing a clone.

Does somatic cell have the property of totipotence?? As I think that fertilization event between ova and sperm leads to certain hormonal or chemical changes that result in formation of zygote, but here somatic cell hybridized and formed the embryo( I am confused)
@animatedbiologywitharpan
@animatedbiologywitharpan 2 жыл бұрын
A normal somatic cell is not totipotent in general ....but in somatic cell nuclear transfer there is substantial nuclear reprogramming which makes it totipotent...Well the molecular mechanism underlies this reprogramming is fairly complex and is a topic for separate video

@@animatedbiologywitharpan why did they specifically choose udder cells? Why not any other somatic cell
@animatedbiologywitharpan
@animatedbiologywitharpan 3 жыл бұрын
The cell nucleus from an adult differentiated udder cell is transferred into an unfertilized oocyte (developing egg cell) that has had its cell nucleus removed. The hybrid cell is then stimulated to divide by an electric shock, and when it develops into a blastocyst . The shock is critical .when sperm enters the ova similar kind of phenomenon happens ( calcium wave ) . The spatio-temporal dynamics of calcium wave signals the embryonic development.

@animatedbiologywitharpan
@animatedbiologywitharpan 2 жыл бұрын
Scientists thought that the technology could be used to remove a nucleus from a mother's egg and replace it with the nucleus from another cell. This would mean that the egg would not need sperm because the nucleus would be replaced with the nucleus of a somatic cell. Remember that a somatic cell has all the genetic material it needs to live. A gamete has only half the amount of genetic material. Scientists thought that egg cells were the right type of cell because they were young and fresh. They were correct

Great video ❤👌by the way I had a question if animals can be cloned,it can be improved I don't know how for example to clone a megalania the DNA of the komodo dragon must be altered to transform it into a prehistoric animal, basilosaurus by altering the DNA of porpoises to turn them into prehistoric whales and finally arsinoitherium by altering the DNA of the elephant and mixing it with the DNA of rhinoceros,there are chances of doing such a feat?
