Very cool to see an AnCo video dapple in surrealism rather than abstract. Not that I mind abstract, it's just what we've come to expect from them.

not to be a dork, but surrealism is a form of abstraction. plus I've learned not to expect any categorical work from them, they're pretty original in my opinion.

Aaron Rossell I don't really think surrealism is a form of abstraction. If anything it's an addition or distortion imo. Surrealism loosely translates to 'on top of realism'. But I guess I can see what you mean.

LYRICS Lately I need a better plan I want to get my knees out in the dirt with my hands Cause I have been a cerebral spouse And my head wants to go into the emerald house And I want to look out, I don't want to bail out And I want to help out, I don't want to nod out I don't want to knock you down But why am I still looking for a golden age? You tell me that I ought to have a golden wage Every time I look up at that blurry sun All I think about are bodies floating up Everybody ought to get that special glance Why does dawn leave everybody home with chance? It makes me wonder how I even wrote this song Does this not occur to almost everyone? It makes a monkey wretch It makes a monkey rich Lately I want to be in my heart But where exactly is my heart and where does it start? I don't want that Tylenol Can I sing and make change without crushing clams? I can help the little things but I have big plans I don't want that Tylenol It makes a monkey wretch It makes a monkey rich

My interpretation of the video is that, like the song, the video is about money and the ultimate worthlessness and uselessness it has when compared with importance of family and love. The rope is an analogy to money. The old man can make the rope and he's so good at it he can make the rope dance, he has respect from everyone. The young man is jealous of this respect and wants it for himself, thereby going to the well, working really hard on his craft and making lots of rope. Time goes by and soon the old man is dead. Further time passes and the boy is now making more rope than the old man ever did, completely filling the house with it. At the end the man realises that he has made too much. Unfortunately its too late - the rope takes his child, and eventually his wife.

Very true I think the old man had only a few pices of rope and was happy until he made too much and couldn't handle it and eventually died and then the young man had too much rope and could not comprehend the greed and chaos

A rope walks into a bar. The bartender tells him "I'm sorry, but we dont serve rope here" The rope says "You must be kidding, all I want is a drink after a hard days work" The bartender replies "You need to leave now" So the rope walks out of the bar, into the ally, ties himself up into a jumble, shags his top end, walks back into the bar. The bartender looks at him and says "We don't serve rope here" The rope looks back at the bar tender and replies "You are mistaken sir, I'm a frayed knot"

I think this video is trying to say something about how older generations can fuck over new ones. Ropes are basic forms of technology/human ingenuity. The old man has power over them, but instead of showing the boy or girl how to use them, he abuses the power to make the boy his slave and impress the girl. Death comes for the old man, and without anyone to control the ropes they get out of hand. We become slaves to systems we were never taught to understand because our elders were selfish.
@SR91313
@SR91313 4 жыл бұрын
But that's just a broad generalization. A lot of elders are genuinely concerned and trying to teach/help future generations.

Funny, I always thought that this song had a very vibrant texture to it. Whenever I listen to it I can just imagine bright lights and flashing neon colours. This video is very brown, though, it's not necessarily what first comes to mind when I hear the song. It's a pretty good track though, probably my favourite off the album next to Today's Supernatural and Rosie Oh.

the old man is the monkey within, the performer who amuses. but he is overbearing, and gets easily tangled up within his own tricks. the song, and the video, are about learning to cope with being a moderately successful artist - someone who has to let the monkey within come out in order to earn a living but also try not to get tangled up in all the hype by letting the monkey get too full of himself.

songs like hey light, alvin row, i see you pan, meet the light child, native belle, pumpkin gets a snakebite.. all of those are characteristic of novel ideas told from people attempting to paint a vivid dream musically, they don't really focus on rhyme or rhythm, but they speak so intrinsically the depths of great imaginations and the lucidity of passionate artists showcasing their great concepts. This? this is just an attempt to seem like more than it is, which is pure cacophony.

This video is like a spiritual process. The old man is the innate wisdom located in a person's psyche and the younger guy represents a person's ego. The deeper and older intelligence can do things that the ego tries to mimic but can't accomplish on it's own, causing the deeper wisdom to fade back into the unconscious (the old man dies.) The cosmic wisdom returns as a mystical figure bearing a diamond (the true Self) which replaces the ego and claims its rightful position within the psyche.
