Animal Domestication - Why Some Animals Can't Be Domesticated

The domestication of animals has had a huge impact on human history. But have you ever wondered why we've only been able to domesticate some animals and not others?
In this video we look at the six reasons why some animals have never successfully been domesticated, as outlined in the book 'Guns, Germs & Steel' by Jared Diamond. We then look at a Russian experiment which attempted to domesticate silver foxes, to understand how domestication can change an animal.
If you liked this video then check out the book which inspired it:

In case youre interested to what happened to the soviet fox project, most of the last domesticated litter were bought by an American couple who continue their selective breeding to this day. The ones that stayed in Russia were let go and most just died as they couldnt readapt to life in the wilderness but some were saved by some Russians who also continue the experiment. If the experiments can go on uniterrupted into the future, it isn't hard to imagine that we will have 100% domesticated foxes in I would say about a 100 years or so.

Its really sad that cheetah breeding in captivity is so hard. They have the same potential has dogs in term of companionship with humans. Helping with hunting. Us protecting their youngs and so on. It shows that it takes just one little criteria to prevent easy domestication. I've seen videos where a guy sleep for some nights with domesticated cheetahs and they're super friendly. Cheetahs would have been really great allies to african tribes as pets.

The Romans thought of aurochs as dangerous, wild and too much trouble to deal with... yet they were domesticated to become cattle thousands of years before that. Beginning in Anatolia. The foxes were domesticated to the point that they have become pets. I think any species can be domesticated. Why do it though? These animals have no function beyond being exotic pets.

During my interest and research into this subject one thing that I read that stood out and summed up potential domestication was....there has to be a natural mutual benefit to both the human and the animal. Some animals dont want or need humans in order to live an easier life. Some animals realized human interaction was the path of least resistance for survival and evolution. On the flip side, some animals don't have any benefit to humans or don't provide increased human efficiency in terms of productivity. It boils down to whether or not both parties will be better off or not.

I think kangaroos would be a good candidate. The only hurdle might be the flight response but I feel they are less flighty than a sheep. They breed easily, grow fast and eat anything grass which is why they are so overpopulated. They are edible. Those bred in a petting zoo are more well behaved than most dogs. They can be kept in captivity easily. They live in a herd, have a hierarchy and as far as I know territories overlapping isn't too much of a problem.

Cheetahs don't have a social hierarchy so even if they could be bread in captivity they'd still be impossible to domesticate. There are some things that are more difficult to breed into an animal. E.g. hierarchy. A dog is loyal because wolves have hierarchies where individuals from a gender are ranked and the lower ones are generally subservient. The one on top is the alpha...and usually, the others are loyal. The entire pack is loyal. The domesticated dog thinks it's still in a pack. The owner is usually the alpha (in some cases the dog thinks it's the alpha and does what it wants when the owner is incompetent). Horses are similar. They follow the leader (the alpha) without question. This is where domesticated foxes are different from dogs. Like cats, they don't have that same loyalty, etc.

You got some things wrong as most people do in this subject. However, the one thing you really got wrong is the fact that you claim dogs were domesticated from wolves. That is not true at all. It is like saying that the Diare Wolf (yes, I probably spelled that wrong 🤷‍♀️) were wolves when infact they were not! Also, elephants fit the domesticated animals according to science as they have been raised, bred and trained to be ridden, work in forests, used for wars and as livestock for 100s of years. All of which is used to determine if an animal is domesticated.

Dogs however when put in that same cage the will immediately (not every dog obvs) jump on u and start licking u and then eventually rest *right beside u* when tired

Elephants are mostly captured and tamed individually. They are very close to domesticated...but not yet. They breed outside captivity. Horses are like cats. They can easily survive and even trive without humans. If you stop feeding your cat, it will probably survive. There are wild horses left by German colonists in the Namib desert in Southern Africa, that have somehow adapted to survive in a harsh climate where even local animals struggle to survive. An elephant would never be able to survive in such a climate. And keeping it alive in captivity is difficult. It's why horses were domesticated in the first place. They were easier than cattle or sheep to keep alive during winter in the Steppes...and provided food during the winter.
