This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Simone Reyes shares with passion her combat for animal rights and elaborates how we can all be activist in our own right.

Simone Reyes was the breakout star of Oxygen's reality tv show "Running Russell Simmons" and became an overnight hero in the animal rights community.
She has been entertainment mogul Russell Simmons’ right hand woman since graduating high school and has often been affectionately referred to as the "Boss" by Simmons himself. Recently PETA 's Animal Rahat Sanctuary in India was officially given a new name "Simone’s Place" in honor of Simone's tireless dedication to the animal rights cause.
Last year she traveled to Taiji, Japan as a Sea Shepherd Cove Guardian to report on and document the atrocities of the dolphin drives. Simone has been featured extensively in print, radio and television media using her image and voice to inspire, motivate, mobilize and guide people who care about the treatment of animals but don't know where to begin to create real change for them.

Lol, in a few years, this movement would be forgotten and had nearly no effect on society. Not many people can go vegan just so you know. Unless you wanna die by making your body consume it's own muscle tissues and weaken your immune system which leaves you open to diseases than okay. Also, your wounds heal a lot slower than normal which is kinda fatal if you're losing a lot of blood (Which means a leech could probably kill you). Here's a fact. Vegans and vegetarians can keep up their low protein diet thanks to their high amounts falote and magnesium in their blood.

You think that just because you've seen a few videos of cows being mistreated, that all farmers treat their livestock like that? Let me as you a question. Are you Christian? If you said Yes, then may I inform you that Jesus Himself ate meat? If you said No, well yall vegans seem to just LOVE pushing yall's beliefs onto us meat-eaters, so why don't I just force my religion onto you. Look, I have no problem if you're vegan, but PLEASE, stop trying to take away my meat. Taking away my meat would be like me taking away your freedom of religion, and forcing everyone to become Catholic. You think it's wrong that I eat meat but I think it's wrong that you try to take away my meat. @@evabeauvoisin533 So normally I do a lot of research before arguing with a bunch of people on the internet over a specific topic like this, but you're literally a year late and I've forgotten pretty much all of my points that I've made. And I don't have time to do the research again because I've been really busy with a research paper for this past week that's just about made me lose half my sanity. But trust me, you're not bringing ANYTHING new to the table. I'm sure if you look through the comments a bit, you'll find someone who's commented the exact same thing as you and my response to them. But honestly, I don't think you're even worth arguing with. You've already judged what kind of person I am based on the simple fact that I eat meat. You say that I'm cruel and that I don't have an ounce of kindness in my heart. You don't know me. You don't know what kind of person I am. You don't know what I've been through, what I've done, and you definitely don't know where I'm headed, so don't even try to tell me what kind of life I'm going to lead. I'm not about to argue with someone like that. It's not worth my time, and I'm already pretty low on time as is. If you think I'm a bad person, fine. I couldn't care less. I know what kind of person I am, I don't need your approval.

I relate so damn much to this. I honestly hate being an activist but it's something I have to do. How could I live with myself if I didn't take action to help? Not speaking up would be so much more comfortable. I'm really shy and socially anxious, but I have to speak up for them.

All those that love their animals and animals love them? All the disabled with their animal friends? All the animals who just love life? Well too bad to animal rights. All those breeds would go extinct. Thousands of them gone. All those animals suffering being taken from their owners so they can "be free" dying out, starving, suffering, unhappy, wanting their human companions but fuck that we're all vegan and think they'll be happy go lucky free. AiraySickle You're biased and uninformed. We're destroying the planet with animal agriculture (Watch COWSPIRACY). Animals don't need to have equal rights in order for people to leave them off their plates. They suffer and feel, that's all that matters. Compassion is never wrong. And the good karma is that people get healthier when they stop consuming animal products. Heart disease, diabetes, lupus & cancer are cured in countless people who start eating a much healthier plant based diet (Watch FORKS OVER KNIVES, and PLANT PURE NATION and FAT, SICK AND NEARLY DEAD). Veganism makes a lot of sense. As for pet ownership, many vegans adopt pets. No need to breed more animals when millions need homes. And what's the point in raising cows, chickens and pigs just to say they still exist, only to brutally slaughter them all? Would you rather live and then be killed horribly or not live at all? I'd rather not live at all if my only choice was to live a life of torture and then be murdered.

I so connect with this. Just watched Cowspiracy with my 7th graders in class. Planting the seeds of change about animal agriculture. I didn't expect to be pulled into my activist role. My aha moment came 8 years ago when my daughter asked me to read the book, "Skinny Bitch". Little did I know it would start my vegan/animal rights/steward of the earth journey. The walls are starting to finally come down. Carry on and keep spreading the truth. I will listen to this talk whenever I need the motivation to keep going on this important path. Thanks!

I have found that inviting friends to lunch often starts the questions as to why I don't eat meat, giving me a chance to explain in a way that is non threatening to them. Great job Simone! I want to work at the ASPCA if/when i graduate from college. If that means moving away, so be it. I've SEEN dogs that were once treated as just property, not loving pets. One dog was so badly beaten, when she first showed up, she had no fur, and almost no chance to live. i cried when i heard that, and felt filled with rage that someone could abuse an animal so badly. Animals are NOT property. They have feelings, emotions. They feel pain, anger, sadness, love. Nothing makes me more angry than circuses. They 'train' their animals with pain and fear. They use cattle prods on the elephants and chains on the tigers. They burn the paw pads OFF the bears, so they can only walk on their hind legs.

That was a beautiful speech Simone. I admire all your work and wish you continued success. My daughter works in the media and shares your views on animal treatment. I'm sure this video will help inspire her to make a difference, like you have. I've also recently become an activist, though my cause is too controversial to mention. Like you said, the scary stuff just turns people away. I especially liked all you said about the sacrifices made for being an activist, as well as the fulfillment. Oh my bad, I sensed sarcasm. Honestly, I don't think meat is that delicious. I mean we can add butter, sauce, flavours etc, but no one loses their mind over a plain boiled chicken. I think habit is a big part of our meat consumption. I think meat is far less addictive than say sugar or Caffeine. 👊🏽

@Google LLC Only certain other animals kill other animals for survival. Humans do not, they kill trillions of individuals annually for no necessity. Humans are frugivores like all our primate ancestors, that's why the leading cause of human death is pretending to be an omnivore (Essylstein, 'A Way to Reverse CAD').

I’ve always been fascinated in the natural world and seeing this speech gives me inspiration. Inspiration to get out there and be a contributor and finally complete my legacy : protect the natural world. We need to change and although I’m not an activist I support these groups . I hope the next generation will be more kind to these wonderful creatures so to inspire someone here’s my story : As a kid I was fascinated by animals, their different traits and colors . One day I thought to myself :how? How are these creatures related ? Lizards and snakes both have scales don’t they? Then as I got older I learned about evolution but not in middle school no no no I read about it in the last year of elementary and because of my knowledge of animals I was soon : the nerd and I was happy they didn’t bully me or anything and that was when I started watching Ted talks and brave wilderness and all that . So I just want to say : we can make this planet a fair world.

More than 200 million animals are killed for food around the world every day - just on land. Including wild-caught and farmed fishes, we get a total closer to 3 billion animals killed daily. That comes out to 72 billion land animals and over 1.2 trillion aquatic animals killed for food around the world every year. It’s truly heartbreaking

multeeful yes you are absolutely correct I'm here in New Mexico building a wildlife sanctuary to say mule deer Antelope and to release wild turkeys back to the state but it seems that you are correct the problem needs to be addressed we are not animals but yet we eat animals I don't get it so thank you for your comment Jim
