I recently found out that geese are unconditionally, with NO exception, afraid of the sound of a Craftsman S205 chainsaw starting up. Every time I turn it on, every goose within audible range, no matter how angry, immediately stops what they’re doing, gets up, and flies away. It’s just a consistent thing.

Born 1952. There had been fear Canadian geese were going extinct. Much earlier (before my birth) a guy named Jack Miner stepped up; but I remember people talking about it. Established feeding grounds, started banding birds, keeping records that formed the basis of the U.S. / Canadian migratory bird treaty. He was very successful. Maybe too successful!

I worked in an urban irrigation project for a few years and we had a lot of geese and ducks. The old timers carried spray bottles with a diluted mixture of water and ammonia with them, when the geese got aggressive they would spray the attackers on the chest of back with the smelly stuff. They would immediately stop and retreat. After a while the aggressive birds learned to avoid the guys with the bottles.

Fun fact: geese fly in V-formation because their wingtips generate spinning vortices, and by positioning oneself in exactly correct spot behind the leader, the follower goose can ride the updraft of that vortex - which is a lot less physical effort to stay airborne. Headwind resistance is actually slightly more, because the leader pushes the air backwards and the follower has to fly through that, but being in the updraft more than makes up for it. Due to the same effect geese can sometimes enter formations beside moving vehicles with particular aerodynamics.

My spouse and I spent a winter weekend at a hotel in Palm Springs. The grounds were occupied by Canada Geese and Flamingos. Two geese approached. They were very tall. The gander faced me eye to eye, matching my height in my wheelchair, a meter tall. My wife was not having it. She challenged the goose directly loudly. He backed off. Imagine my surprise.

Growing up in southeastern Virginia, the Canada Geese migrated back and forth. Now they stay year round. I read an article a couple of years ago that some Americans concerned about the Canada Goose might become endangered, so they raised many of them domestically. This, as well as the vast number of detention ponds built in housing areas, have contributed to these Canada Geese not migrating.

We had a pet goose named Flipper. We found her as an egg and let our chickens do the work. She was the sweetest goose I've ever had. Whenever you fed her she was so careful , and on top of that she'd follow you around with her best friend (a chicken she got attached to.) On the last few weeks of her life she learned how to get on our porch and constantly honk till we came out and pet her/feed her. A tiny bit ago we lost her, and never found her. She never seemed interested in the geese flying overhead so we believe the cougar nearby got her. RIP Flipper, you will live forever in our hearts.

Collies are the best way I’ve seen for dealing with Canada geese. My father’s employer had a problem with them since their offices were located in an industrial park with acres of lawns. They hired a local farmer and his collies to keep the geese away from the buildings and sidewalks. It works pretty well. Geese are very smart and will learn, and collies can be very persuasive.

As a child, I grew up on a farm which had a flock of geese. Whenever the man delivering propane to us can, he would get cornered by one of the geese. But, honestly, geese are not so bad, they're merely experts on bluffing others. They're aggressive and mean, but once you've grabbed their neck and control their head, they suddenly become quite docile. But the term "city slickers" is quite appropriate since anyone not experienced with geese are sure to be successfully bluffed by them.

When I was 6 I was attacked by a Canadian goose... and I bonked it on the head with a stick and it let out the most confused honk ever. Looked and me a walked away honking up a storm.

I am from Canada, usually, the geese there are calm, unless you go too close, then they chase you and hold a grudge next year

In Ottawa the geese seem rather timid to me, if I'm honest. If you get too near their goslings on the water they just swim away. Guess it's cus' our Canada geese are just more canuck than the American ones, eh?

@@nostalgiachu The are the same ones, don't let them fool you into thinking they aren't assholes. I can't think of many other wild animals that will, at random, stop what they are doing to start a fight with a human minding their own business. It isn't super common, but spend enough time around them and you will be randomly harassed. Also don't feed them, they won't get more tame, they'll just just become MORE aggressive. Also, their shit is pretty damn toxic even for shit with E Coli, Salmonella, Histoplasmosis, Campylobacter, Coccidia, and Giardia. EACH GOOSE CRAPS >1lb EACH PER DAY! That is more than a human adult.

@@All4Grogg I know magpies in Australia can be very aggressive, during nesting season I believe, dive-bombing pedestrians. Haha, birds can be very territorial, it seems. Must be inherited from their ancestors. At least they've lost their teeth. Well. Mostly. The residential pond by my house put up a sign the other year saying "please don't feed the birds". I thought it had something to do with littering, and wondered why it pictured a Canada goose, when mallard ducks are the pond's main inhabitants. Now I know heh heh.. Like I said, I tend to keep my distance from geese. I'm sure if they gave me trouble like they appear to deal on most people, my opinion would be more like the one I have of pandas. o-o

I was today years old when I realised that people purposefully created the phrase ‘duck-duck-goose’ because geese will literally chase people down like rabid children.
