Ever since I first heard of them from the movie _Hoot,_ I've absolutely adored these little guys. I knew that they collected dung to attract dung beetles, but had no idea they raised so many owlets at a time, so thank you for teaching me that. They're a perfect example of niches being filled by the most unlikely of animals, and I love them to pieces.

When I was a kid in the 80s we walked through a field and there was a hole in the ground. We were looking in it and started seeing something looking back at us. It was a family of burrowing owls. One of my oldest memories.

I live in southeastern Brazil. There used to be a family of burrowing owls living just outside my house. I think they lived in a hollowed out termite nest. That was some eight years ago. As our neighborhoog urbanized, they disappeared. But I used to be amazed at them when I was a kid.

Burrowing owls can be found in Arizona. Estrella Mountain Community College (part of the Maricopa Community College network) had to delay construction on one of their buildings because a burrowing owl nest was found in the construction site. If I remember correctly, this was like a decade ago, and they were just waiting for the birds to "move along" before construction resumed.
@BillFromAZ
@BillFromAZ Жыл бұрын
I live in Arizona and there is a group that relocates burrowing owls to other places when construction is taking over their location. Some burrowing owls do migrate to Mexico or Texas....but not all of them, so relocation is needed.
@jackielinde7568
@jackielinde7568 Жыл бұрын
@@BillFromAZ I remember in this story, the college specifically decided to wait for the owls to move. I think it may be due to babies and/or eggs in the nest. Then again, this was around a decade ago. There's news stories on it somewhere, if you can get Google to spit it out for you.

Thank you for doing a segment on my favorite owl. I'm just tickled to see them - and the prairie dogs. I've argued with property owners for the dogs' protection on behalf of themselves and the owls (and others) for years. My dad was once a military range warden at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma decades ago when I was young, before the environmental movement really took off; and he was adamant that every little living thing kept something else alive with us at the top of the pile. "Take any of those little things away, and you'll find human beings falling off their pedestals, too." How right he was. NB. I am so enamored by the wonderful animal art! I'm gonna go broke next month sooner than usual.

I'm pretty sure all owl species have long legs (look at owl skeletons). But these are usually hidden beneath their feathers. My guess is these extra feathers disappeared for burrowing owls because they didn't need the insulation as much, and the feathers were somehow hindering when living in burrows.
