Though myths and legends tend to focus on human characters and figures of supernatural origins, real life animals play a massive role in cultural stories. With thousands of animal species found across the planet, every culture on earth incorporates them to varying degrees in their respective mythologies. Sometimes they are signs and messengers of the gods and higher powers, sometimes they are companions or enemies to the protagonists, and sometimes they are the main characters in their own fables. This program will detail some of the ways that animals have influenced storytelling throughout the ages!

Mythology has so many different aspects. In recent years I've been facinated by a whole branch of mythology from japan on how inate objects can come to life and have their own personalities. Mythology is such a vast ocean, thanks for such a fun video.

This was such a fun video! I loved all the different and widely-varied references to different mythology, media, and literary works that you included here (especially for the nod to Kipling's "The Jungle Book" - one of my favorites!). I would be interested to see a video of how animals, or their likeness, relate to some of the darker figures of mythology and folklore, such as the owl companion to the Wendigo in Algonquian legend and the different animals that Skinwalkers are said to assume the figure of.

Something I find fascinating is how the animals can represent entirely different things for different cultures. For example, the Otter in Irish mythology belongs to a tribe of nearly invincible warriors akin to the Greek hero Achilles, otters are basically an entire tribe of this, but their weak point is noticeably in a different place than that of Achilles. At the same time, in Japanese culture, the Otter is a tricker, akin to Renard the fox from European mythology or Coyote in Aboriginal American lore.

I thought that the manticore was possibly inspired by tales of various maned monkeys, which can have a roughly human-like face and lion-like mane.
@melanimatejak6821
@melanimatejak6821 10 ай бұрын
The thing is monkeys are not dangerous, while Manticore is clearly a memory of some deadly being. For me, it sounds more like a human than animal, that is, as memory of hostile primitive tribes hiden deep in the jungles, killing trespassers in their territory with poisoned arrows (Manticore is claimed to shoot those from it's scorpion tail!).

Three of my favorite animal myths/folklore all involve lions. 1. The Nemean Lion (Greek Mythology.) This lion isn't so much monstrous such as the Chimera is, instead the Nemean Lion is more of a "Super-Lion," i.e., (typically) larger and stronger than regular lions and has skin that human weapons cannot penetrate with claws that can cut through almost anything. The hero, Hercules, having to more or less use the lion's own power against itself in order for Hercules to defeat the nearly indestructible lion. 2. The lions of "Daniel in the Lion's Den" (Biblical.) The lions are regular Earth-born lions held in a dungeon as a means of execution for prisoners, yet by a miracle (of God) these lions do not harm the prisoner/prophet Daniel, which is to be an inspiration to others to have faith as well as demonstrate the power of (a) God. 3. The now exaggerated true story, but no less legendary, story of "The Ghost and The Darkness," (true Africa history.) The very real (but since then, highly exaggerated by Hollywood and other medias,) story of two African lions that went on a killing "rampage," for several months, through a railroad workcamp at the end of the 19th Century. These lions remind us of the fact that all too often, truth can be stranger than fiction.

Hmmm, a true story by definition is not a legend. Besides, there were many man-eating lions in the history. Maybe better to pick some of the lion fables as the third one 🙂
@skyden24195
@skyden24195 10 ай бұрын
@@melanimatejak6821 I get what you're saying, but for one, I'm not going to try to narrow down another of the countless lion stories just to make an alternate third entry, lol. And, yes, the third story is a true story, and other human-hunting-lion stories may be out there, but as best to my knowledge, this is one of the most, if not the most famous, of lion-maneaters' stories. And the point of it being my third pick was due to the fact that it is unique from the others in that it is based on an actual historical event, but even in this relative short time of history since the event did happen, the story is steadily being warped into some semblance of legend. The first two stories of my list are millennia's years old, so who knows how much of them are actually based on some sort of true events, other than there were lions then as there are now. 😉
@melanimatejak6821
@melanimatejak6821 10 ай бұрын
@@skyden24195 Ah, good then. Well, there had to be some true story even behind first two stories: after all, myths have some foundations. Of course that unpiercable skin is an exaggeration 😀 But another interesting fact: are you aware you picked lions from three different continents? Because Heracles's lion was European lion (in his time, native lions of Europe weren't yet extinct!), and Daniel's was Asian lion, while Ghost and Darkness were African sort 😉

Mythical creatures did NOT come from "imagining" of known animals. Manticores, Griffins, Dragons... They are all real. But they are not animals, they are spiritual creatures on higher level than human. Nevertheless, such many stories about animal kingdom. Beautiful indeed ❤ The Nature has always fascinated humans and for a good reason 💖 There's such majesty and magick in the animal kingdom and once You learn to look through their eyes and think like them, as You interact with them... Priceless experience ❤
