Arctic Foxes are amazingly adapted to their habitat. Red foxes are amazingly adaptable. They used to never meet in the wild, but the climate is changing and so is the wild. What happens when these foxes' habitats overlap?

It's interesting how yet again, redcoats are taking over the territory of the natives, just this time it's not British musketeers, but red foxes.

There are foxes that only live on the Channel Islands near me,and my dad used to have a friend that had one that liked to stay in his boat.One time,they were near the island and a fox sent out a mating call.The fox jumped out of the boat and swam all the way to the island and never came back.

no, no this one actually recognizes climate change
@akaercone8444
@akaercone8444 7 жыл бұрын
TotodileSmile3721 climate change isn't human caused its natural, so yes climate change is real, but it's not caused by humans, every year the sun gets an inch bigger, the temperature has increased .8 degrees since 1880, over 100 years it's gotten about 100 inches bigger, this would logically cause a change in temperature.
@TotodileSmile3721
@TotodileSmile3721 7 жыл бұрын
Evan Cook While, yes, there certainly are natural causes of climate change and major climate fluctuations do happen over time, the climate change happening nowadays is _far_ more rapid than anything previously measured. The vast majority of the scientific community is in solid agreement that the current biggest contributor to climate change _is_ indeed humans. While the growth of the sun could also be hypothetically contributing to temperature increase and I certainly appreciate that you're bringing evidence to the conversation instead of "haha fucking stupid liberals wake up america!!," I would still say that the amplified greenhouse effect is a much more convincing and thorough explanation for climate change. After all, the sun has been increasing in size for _all_ of Earth's history, but Earth has also had times where climate change caused _lower_ global temperatures; it doesn't explain why current climate change is _so_ extreme now. And regardless of the cause, climate change is doing very bad things to our environment, so one way or another it needs to be addressed :'D
@Gabdube
@Gabdube 7 жыл бұрын
The thing about the natural changes in climate is that they are significantly accelerated by humanity's production of greenhouse gases since the industrial revolution. Of course climates change naturally, the issue is that the rate is artificially increased, and that it's on us to do something about that increase.

Anne Onyme I'm afraid I don't share your fetish for the metric system. Also, measuring temperature in Celsius offers no benefit over Fahrenheit. If anything, you lose some precision if you round to integers or half-integers. The Kelvin scale is useful in physics, but no more so than the Rankine scale. Furthermore, for consistency, you guys should measure angles in Gradians (100 gradians = 1 right angle).
@ShankarSivarajan
@ShankarSivarajan 7 жыл бұрын
Anne Onyme Oh, weight and distance are worth metricizing. Temperature... not so much. And if you don't like my characterization of your obsession with the metric system as a fetish, you can call it a cult if you like. That would explain why the lesser countries (read as: non-American) use it.
@anneonyme9622
@anneonyme9622 7 жыл бұрын
My question was not about the value of one system or the other... it will be easier for foreigners to follow if the editing was done in both units... i have sadly no idea how cold is 60°F... and your answer about "fetish" was really condescending x)
@ShankarSivarajan
@ShankarSivarajan 7 жыл бұрын
Anne Onyme Oh, and I think I have not made myself clear. Of course the metric system is "adequate". It's just not necessarily _superior_ to the Imperial system in _every_ case. Specifically, since the pound is lighter than the kilo, and the foot is shorter than the meter, when approximated to the nearest integer or half-integer, similar to the Fahrenheit over the Celsius, these are actually _better_. EDIT: My apologies for being condescending. That wasn't my intention. How was I to know you weren't American?

Can arctic foxes and red foxes interbreed? Or maybe I should ask are there any known cases of them interbreeding in the wild? I wonder if now that they are sharing territories more now they will, just like we are now seeing grizzly and polar bears making grolar bears.
@animalwondersmontana

They are different species, not closely related, and mating behavior isn't exactly the same. It's not likely, though I've heard rumors of some hybrids, but I haven't been able to solidly confirm an actual case of offspring, let alone fertile offspring.

Thanks! I just assumed they would at least be able to produce offspring, given how wolves, coyotes, and dogs can all interbreed, but it's interesting to learn that fox species are different enough that their ability to hybridize would be questionable.

I'm pretty sure I've heard about the lemmings being put on hard times because of heating in an episode of Wild Kratts, though if I remember correctly I think it might've been the Tortuga's heat that did it, instead of climate change. It might've been made to address this problem. Thanks for telling me more about the foxes's perspective on over heating. The episode might've mentioned the foxes eating a lot of the lemmings due to the snow melting very quickly.

Absolutely loved this and found your explanation as to why climate change plays a huge and unfortunate factor into the food source reasonable. Also the concept that adaptive radiation could occur as red foxes move more north out of their normal habitats because it means more territory for them, thus expanding the species and possibly giving them more opportunities to adapt to a slightly colder environment and passing down some sort of new transmutation for newer generations of red foxes to come.

@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 7 жыл бұрын
If they can fully extend their wings in all directions without hitting a wall, perch, food dish, or toy then that's a start. You should also have at least 6 different sized and textured perches so they have options on where to stand. They also need several toys to play with and chew on at all times. If your cage accommodates the space for the perches, toys, and wingspan then it's a good size.

We need both education of individuals and coertion by the law. Neither is sufficient by itself for now. Education is the most reliable and ethical method, but we can't educate enough people to change in a sufficiently short amount of time. Coertion will have to be employed if laws and bills are to be enforced before the entire population is educated. But legislative changes require the population to already have changed... this is a neverending circle, and the only way to break it is for elected officials to somehow coerce the population into going that way before the population even wills it.
