1:36 The panther is actually pacing around repeatedly in tight circles, which is called zoochosis which happens in animals when they are stressed in captivity. it mostly happens in zoo animals.

It's actually known as a "stereotypical behaviour" and occurs as a result of stress, boredom and lack of mental stimulation. It's just a technical way of saying that they're going insane, or heading that way. Rocking back and forth, pacing, eating vomit or faeces (in an unusual way for the species) or passively concentrating on their own thoughts instead of their surroundings are the most common symptoms.

For all the perceived distaste the animator seems to have for zoos in general, I sense that the animation portrays an even deeper and broader distaste for people as a whole (at least people who attend zoos). The uncomfortable sound design of mass foot scuffling, the irreverent gaze of all the onlookers, the jarring focus on comercialization in relation to zoos, the dampened mood expressed on the observed animals.... I wonder how the artist came to feel the way they do about zoos, and is it a view they hold for humans at large? TL, DR: I found myself more focused on how unsettled I was with the people portrayed than the point of the animation. Anyone else?
@cogsandglimmers
@cogsandglimmers 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely. I think the animator, deep inside, sees everyone as an issue. You don't see the people who feel bad, just those that are like "neat". I'm originally from St. Louis, where, honestly? Those enclosures aren't okay at all. And the thing is, I got that. But I also wouldn't just stare awkwardly then leave. I'd take in the environment, the small behaviors.... These people shown? They're like robots. Kinda creeps me out.

I actually felt uncomfortable watching this, the small moments of silence, and the way the people walked around felt alienating to me, as if the creator was in a way mocking or paroding the experience and environment when coming to these zoos, that animals aren't as exiting or inviting as they are in the posters or merchandise, because of living literally in a cage their whole lives, kept from the real world has dried out of every essence of soul, and the inhumane way the people stare blankly and quickly walk away as if blinded by the animal's clear crisis, and how dried out the animals and environment are, how quiet everything seems as if being in this continuous cycle had tired everyone including people and animals, you either feel enjoyment or you feel sympathy. Here, you feel nothing. The animation also captures the cheap simplistic style that many corporations use for advertising and does it perfectly.
@bloomingmagnolias4058
@bloomingmagnolias4058 3 жыл бұрын
I definitely felt unsettled; the way the people moved around to enclosures, talked to the other people, made me feel like they were portrayed as robots. I feel like the person who made this definitely doesn't like zoos or anyone visiting them. I could definitely feel the animals stress and depression being locked up, and the people's half-hearted excitement for being at the zoo. I still like this film though, and definitely understand the creator's opinion on zoos, though I don't think the zoos I've been to are this bad and I don't think zoos like this are very common, thankfully.

I agree. When I watched this the first time, I wasn’t too upset about the Rhino bc out of all the animals, he had the most justifiable reason for being in a zoo: poachers. Yes, he could be on a nature preserve, but there’s lots of risk with poachers breaking in, the rhino’s dying anyways, etc. But overall, the other animals just seemed like they were fun for a little bit, but then everyone moved on. I think that in some cases, because we have such easy access to these animals through zoos, we take them for granted. But when you watch a documentary about these animals, it’s completely different bc the animals are in their natural habitat and it’s fun to watch them be at ease.

It has lived in the same place the whole time that boy was doing what we do over the period of a few years.
@Crow23346
@Crow23346 3 жыл бұрын
Yes because the elephant cannot go back into the wild? You realise that right? Its a sad reality, but a lot of the animals who are rescued need to be looked after until they’re better, and once they’re better, they usually don’t know how to survive on their own, if they let them go, that elephant will definitely die, so they have to stay at the zoo, THAT is why we have zoos. Its actually why in some countries its illegal to rescue animals, you can be fined, because once you rescue it, that animal will probably never get to live its life normal and happily in the wild, it will forget how.

Hello, I wanted to kindly step in and shed some light on this subject. I see many people in the comments who seem to have a lot of negative feelings when it comes to zoos. I am not here to argue or Force you to believe my opinion, I’m simply here to educate. I work at a local zoo as an intern, the zoo I intern at is one of the larger zoos however I still believe it applies. Zoos are a crazy important part of conservation. They provide a safe environment for many endangered species of the wild, using their opportunity in close proximity with these animals to observe and learn about species and how to help them in the wild. The zoo keepers also work very hard day and night coming up with enrichment to keep the animals active and excited. They are fed with challenges, having to tear apart boxes or tip over jars to retrieve their food and keep their minds active. Zoos work very hard to make sure their enclosure is well adept to their animals and a space as similar to their normal habitat and as large as possible , most animals have back holdings that you as a guest are unable to see. They form relationships with the keepers (though keepers are very careful not to make them pets) and the zoo uses these animals to educate people in conservation and allow the opportunity for someone to see and love an animal they never would have had a chance to otherwise. I guess what I’m trying to get across is.. please educate yourself and understand before making a comment, and try to understand zoos are not in it for the money. Most of a zoos money goes straight back into the animals and their conservation. Thank you for reading, you may ask any question you have below!

Most animals in zoos also have no idea what it was like in the wild and even if they did they would probably much prefer it in the zoo. The wild is an unpredictable place where they have to hunt and survive, not to mention the poachers, deforestation, weather conditions and other harsh conditions. The animals in a zoo get regular feeding and don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, this seems like a much happier way to live. We do.

Yeah! I currently research Orangutan behavior at my local zoo. I do find that one of the Orangutans exhibits stereotypy, but I think that's due to the breeding efforts which seem a little fruitless at the moment... Zoos are often seen as a necessary evil and I see where they come from. Support zoos that treat their animals right and actively work towards bettering their lives as well as funding conservation efforts.

As someone who’s volunteered and worked for a zoo this makes me a little upset. Not all zoos are horrible like this. Most actually take expert care of their animals with enclosures large enough for them, plenty of enrichment and a correct, healthy diet. The animals I’ve worked alongside are healthy and outgoing and they are not just in the zoo for the purpose of entertainment. Everywhere you look there are poster boards and plaques giving facts and names of different organizations that you can donate to in order to help save these animals in the wild. People are more likely to be emotionally moved and inclined to donate if they see the animal in person. Sometimes an image on TV or the computer doesn’t evoke the same reaction to take a step forward and help. Not to mention zoos around the world have gradually slowed the decline in many critical and endangered species. Zoos helped remove many of these animals off of these lists into non-threatened. So, yeah, the video was beautifully animated but I’m not so fond of the message it’s giving. Yes there are still bad zoos that should be shut down because they just want a quick buck, but not all of them are like this.

Does still not change the fact that these animals are treated like prisoners just for being who they are. Animals must me in the wild and not in cages even if they are "bigger" than the other ones. We treat them like objects for our entertainment. Just switch them with humans. If humans were held like in zoos. Would you want be there? No freedom and no options to go where you want? The same place everyday? How would you feel?
@snowstorm5742
@snowstorm5742 4 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you. While I fully acknowledge that yes there are zoos like the one portrayed in the video that treat their animals poorly, most zoos arent like that at all and this gives the wrong message. The zoo I volunteer for is dedicated to conservation and keeping the animals healthy and happy in their lives. The reason why there are animals is to educate the public about them and the threats facing them so that they may grow a love of them and help protect them later in the future. In fact, many of the keepers and staff there say that in a perfect world zoos wouldn't need to exist because we wouldnt need to educate the public about threats like poaching and deforestation
@PigeonLord
@PigeonLord 4 жыл бұрын
Tsu' Tey except, they’re not always in the same place every day. Most if not all zoos have back rooms for each exhibit to take the animals into for various reasons, be it medical care, de-stressing, weather related, etc. Animals in zoos are more often than not born in captivity. They have no knowledge of how to survive on their own in the wild, they don’t realize there’s more beyond what they know. You say to switch it with humans, well then it would more accurately be like someone taking you from your home and everything you know and plopping you in the wilderness somewhere and saying “you’re free! Go live your best life!” Is it possible for you to survive on your own like that? Maybe, but in an environment potentially filled with predators (including poachers for some endangered species), your chances are much slimmer, and that’s not a chance people who actually care about these animals are willing to take, especially if said animal is endangered. Yes, some bad zoos still exist, but more often than not zoo keepers care for and respect their animals, they know how to handle them and keep their minds enriched and active so they don’t get bored. So please, stop with the “set them free” nonsense, that is dangerous thinking for these animals. Releasing them into the wild without proper reintroduction (or in some cases, at all) can mean certain doom to that animal.
@luka9911

I have to disagree with this, at least for the most part. I HAVE seen some pretty awful zoos, but saying that they are all horrible, boring places for animals is just plain wrong. Zoos are a very important part of animal conservation and research. Additionally, a lot of animals in zoos and places like them are non-releasable due to handicaps. I remember going to an aquarium near me where they had a deaf Dolphin. He got very sick as a baby and was brought into the aquarium for care. Once he was well enough, however, they realized that he could no longer hear and now they keep him to help them learn about the disease that made him deaf so that they could possibly, some time in the future, have a treatment that will allow further sick Dolphins be released back into the wild. I know the whole world wants to stomp and shout about how "humans are terrible," but there are genuinely people out there who want to help. They want to give back to the world and care for the creatures we share it with.

Also many zoo animals are born in captivity and even with base instinct can't just get reintroduced into the wild. For animals with established territories and packs a new member is likely to get chased away or killed. Heck animals that live in and near cities would probably die of starvation if they are suddenly relocated to an environment (although natural to their species) far from human civilization.

I heard the same things about doves that my parents had. "As they were in captivity they could not survive in the wild". But if they hadn't been in captivity at the base... And that what you call "care for animal" aren't zoo. The basic zoo is made for money. And some are starting to take extra care to whiten their image. No living being is happy in captivity.

As someone who is fascinated with wildlife, I feel like noting that most animals in most zoos are born in captivity. They have no survival skills or instincts and throwing them back out there would be much more cruel than keeping them in an enclosure and to teach them to be wild again is a must more costly effort than just keeping them in a captive setting. I acknowledge there are bad zoos, but there are a lot more competently ran ones than there are bad ones.

1fishmob that’s true some zoos just are their to protect them from poachers or to rehabilitate some do what you stated ( which I still don’t find that good because at one point they did take wild animals with survival instincts to breed ones without ) and the worse out of them all the ones that kill the animals once they are two old and buy them from poachers.

Pupper Nickel A lot of animals in captivity currently were never wild to begin with. Most are either previous pets, orphaned, surrendered by other places (roadside attractions which are the worst) and etc. Good zoos don’t deserve the bad press, there’s a lot of zoos that stick to their values fiercely and sincerely do want the best for their animals. My local zoo has given their elephants and hippos to sanctuaries because Michigan isn’t an appropriate home for them and the zoo wasn’t able to provide them with a proper home. They’ve opted to house animals that are used to colder climates, like Amur tigers, snow monkeys, wolverines, etc. its refreshing to see (: They’ve also taken massive strides in improving their smaller reptile and amphibian enclosures too!

It’s not a matter of being caged or not. I appreciate the potential zoos have to be an amazing educational source as well as saving endangered species. However, just like with humans, animals need more than just the bare essentials. They also need space and enrichment. It would lead to happier animals and a happier experience for guests as well

As someone who works at a zoo, I can tell you that a properly licensed zoo, quality checked by outside organizations such as AZA, is a world away from this reality! I can also tell you that in an ideal world, zoos wouldn't exist. Unfortunately, as you seem well aware of, our world is NOT ideal, and zoos and protective sanctuaries are often the only ways to protect species from complete extinction. While our zoo mostly raises money for conservation of our animals' wild brethren, we have helped reintroduction efforts for Mexican wolves and have sustained a breeding population of Panamanian Golden Frogs, which were wiped out in their native range by a fungus and aren't viable for reintroduction until we find a way to fight it. Good zoos (and there are many of us) do good work! Just make sure you do your research before you visit any to make sure they're a good one. All that being said, while I hope you change your mind on proper zoos, I fully understand the sentiment behind this. I watched Tiger King and was sickened by the morons buying and throwing animals in all too small cages out of what they called love for them, and this goes on far too often for far too many species. Thankfully for every idiot today who loves animals as a commodity, I'd say there's three more who love them just for being themselves. We still have a long way to go with animal welfare, but we've come a huge way since a mere half a century past. There's still hope!

The panther pacing and elephant swaying were great way of showing their distress. Lots of folks commenting that zoos aren't like this anymore need to remember that different countries have different rules, as well as bad people running roadside zoo's for profit. While I adore the animation, as someone who has spent my summers working at a Florida zoo I feel the need to remind people not all zoos are like this. Some are, but many take incredible care of their animals. In fact, zoos and aquariums are often times major contributors to conservation funds. Also from personal experience I can tell you those “secret cages” you see photographs are more often than not temporary shift cages we put animals in while we clean their habitat to make it nice and healthy. Edit: I should also mention that I’m studying conservation biology in college so we learn a lot about how zoos can benefit wildlife

This is kind of misinforming, many zoos these days aren't that bad, and if they seem bad some are trying to improve. The zoos I've been to have had much bigger enclosures for their animals, they could roam around and climb, jump, and hide or play if they wanted to. The monkeys were playful too in days that weren't too hot. The animals seemed totally fine, living a calm, safe life. The only animals in one zoo I was in that didn't look that active and happy were the elephants, but I heard they were trying to do something about it. There's no doubt that zoo truly cares about their animals, they have done a lot to help species. And you also see on TV about vets in zoos here in my tiny country, they really care about their animals and do their best to keep them free from sickness and if needed, put them down to end their suffering instead of keeping them alive just to earn more money. There are multiple reasons zoos are needed. They help our endangered animals to not go extinct. Zoos are a safe place where they are allowed to breed without struggling to find a partner, are free from the danger of being hunted by predators or humans, and are given healthy food and water and are kept healthy by vets. Of course there are zoos that are terrible, there will always be one bad thing of everything, but we can always try to shut down those bad ones or make sure they improve. Also, I won't be replying. I've said enough in this comment alone for you people to understand my opinion and I don't wanna get involved with drama.

Almost all (for the exception of 1, but I'm hoping it'll be closing down soon lmao) the zoos I've been to have had at LEAST a quarter to a half mile enclosures for the big animals like elephants, giraffes, and rhinos. They only give small enclosures to the animals who don't need huge ones, like tree frogs and tarantulas. Zoos get a bad name, and I'm done with it.

I just went to the zoo in arizona last week, I may be replying in the comment after a year but I'm trying to prove a point. The fact that the animals have small enclosures, very little space to run about. Example: The Cheetah is a fast animal, the fastest land mammal on earth. It deserves more space, more room mates. The elephant for another example, they are social animals and deserve way more attention. The elephant is a gentle majestic creature, they may charge at other animals and even humans by they do it with purpose. They protect themselves when doing it, Fun fact about elephants: Elephants actually think humans as "cute" scientist have even proved this by introducing a Elephant to a human, the scientific study showed that the same part of the brain lights up when they see a human. Same as a human, let's say a cute puppy is in front a human.. the human or person will most likely say "aww!" The same part of the brain lights up. Don't believe me? Search it up and see for yourself.. same with the lion and panther, they need more space and entertainment. I just find it sad, after I visited the zoo I noticed that most of the animals in the zoo were under medical observation.. I think that proves that zookeeper's take less care of the animals. I went to see the bobcat in it's enclosure and it smelled like straight pee, the people near me "were fascinated by the animal" but the bobcat avoided human contact, either the bobcat experienced abusive behavior from humans or I could possibly be because the bobcat seen a california condor from across. There was even a scarlet macaw with a broken wing, me and my family said nice things to it like "Hello Pretty bird!" Or "Hi handsome boy!" The macaw seemed excited but it was kinda "trapped" it had a broken wing and had a small playset surrounded by shallow water, it was basically isolated. My mom felt so bad for it, I even got teary eyed when it wanted to come to us so bad but couldn't because of its. Wing injury's, now I don't know if the zoo captured these animals when they already had a injury or physically hurt the animal. The golden eagle, there was two of them.. they both had bad injury's on their wings. They were very skittish when the zookeeper came in to clean the enclosure (removing weeds and other pesty plants) I'm not sure if anyone is still reading this but if you are, I recommend to not go to the zoo.. it's truly heartbreaking to see the animals barely being able to move from injury's, same with sea world/sea life in california. There is maybe no proof but when I was there as a child Ive seen the dorsal fins of orcas and dolphins, they were scratched and even in a very small space with barely enough room to even swim. They even added fake seaweed in their, not that I didn't do any good as the dolphin tried to eat it, I hope you see what I'm trying to prove here.. as this comment will be drowned in the 3.9k comments.

Uh, someone from the future here and I just had to comment on this. This entire comment is… strange. Feels like a young kid that wasn’t educated enough about how zoos work. Cheetahs although fast don’t need insanely large exhibits, but I will say most cheetah exhibits I see are spacious enough for them to run around with enrichment. The bobcat smelling like pee is… normal. That is how they normally make their home smell and how they smell. The reason for it being skittish is cause well, that is in its nature. No cruelty there. All zoo animals are on medical observation, the same way you go to a doctor for a checkup, and various zoo animals are donated to the zoo because they are unfit to survive in the wild because of their medical conditions. For instance the birds you mention are very common to be put into zoos for their wing injuries, because otherwise they’d just simply die in the wild. This usually is a lead in for preservation efforts and discussions about taking care of the animals of the wild and their habitat by showing the importance. I highly, highly doubt the zoo did anything to harm the animals and instead is keeping them safe and medically stable. I shame these anti-zoo agenda pushing youtube videos that showcase only the worst zoos that the ordinary person can’t even go to 80% of the time. They’re so delusional and effect the minds of people like you into believing lies.

For avoid estereotipial movemements caused by stress zoos provide enrichments to the animals to keep them distracted and make their wild instinct stronger and brake the routines, it can be in diferent forms: food, smells, the disposition of the elements of their installation, etc. And there are a lot of formats: in food format they must broke or take out the food from the site that the food is, sove some puzzles or follow the smell, into the hided food, smells it can be used to make, that the animals mark their territory or follow smells, and the exploration enrichments are based on change the disposition of the objects in the habitat. All the enrichment is accesible on every specie, and zoos must find the equilibrium between difficult, but not frustrated to the animal, because if the enrichment is imposible to solve the animal gets frustrated and this is worst than do nothing. For example in the parcelona zoo to the chimps the keepers use an artificial anteer or put some food in socks and made some knots, this is imposible to solve for a zebra or a meerkat.

To 'save' them we lock them up and cause them to go insane (sterotypical behaviour)...Those who bang these animals up don't care about these animals as INDIVIDUALS but because certain humans find them fascinating. That is the bottom line. As to they would not 'survive in the wild'....because the 'wild' has been concreted over. Remember certain people - actually a lot of people - used to think slaves couldn't make it on their own either. Zoos are prisons. End of.

I just want to say that a lot of zoos are good. The animals have friends to play with, plenty of space to move around and they get new toys and treats, often Also, they usually have indoor rooms with air conditioning, and soft beds to keep them safe and warm overnight And most zoos really do try to help animals. There's a zoo in Ecuador where they have these two bears that are the last of their kind and the people there are trying to help save and protect the species. (Idk if they've succeeded, it's been a while) There's also a zoo in Virginia, where a baby cheetah lost their mother, and that cheetah currently lives with a dog and some humans, and they all spend lots of time together, outside of zoo hours I've even seen zoos where they give the animals extensive medical treatment and even let them mate and have babies, without the humans choosing which animals should and shouldn't mate with each other

I've been to a zoo in poverty-stricken area of a South American country and it took better care of the animals. Not the best, but way better than this. It's lions were rescued from a circus. It had a bird area where there were no cages, just a tunnel of native trees and local parrots, macaws, and other feathered friends could nest freely in the trees. It had a free of pollution river with turtles and fish, which fascinated my little ones. What I'm saying is that if a tiny, South American country can do it, then why can't we?

This is really deep. There are a lot of zoos out there that should not exist because of the way they treat their animals as a tourist attraction. I do think that some zoos are important however because they let people develop a love for animals that they’d likely never be able to see in person. The Houston zoo is really nice because it has really nice enclosures built for its animals and the keepers are always giving them enrichment. Without it I wouldn’t want to pursue biology.

As an animator myself I do respect the effort, but I've never seen a zoo like this. Admittedly I haven't been to many, but the few I've seen have had large enclosures that mimic the animal's natural environment. Usually I couldn't even see most of the animals because there was ample room and cover for the animal to hide and have some peace. I only saw animals when they chose to let people see them. I don't see how that's abuse. Am I abusing my cat because I keep her indoors? She's obviously happy, frequently comes meowing for my attention, snuggles up and purrs when I pick her up. She's healthy, active, and playful. She's actually right next to me, sleeping on my bed. She's a lot farther from her natural habitat than the zoos I've seen but she's obviously a kitty who's content with her life. Even when the door's accidentally left open, she only takes a few pawsteps outside before sitting down. She doesn't want to leave. If I released her into the wild, she'd die. And she'd die feeling terrified and alone and wondering why her beloved human abandoned her. She's probably use her last breath to meow for me, because any time I leave her for too long (like a whole day or more, while she's with someone else so she's not neglected) she cries for me. She's not too unlike many zoo animals. Yeah she's more domesticated than them but cats aren't even technically considered domesticated I don't think, so my point stands Zoos aren't inherently abusive or neglectful. I'm sure some are but based on this comments section and my own knowledge, most aren't. Humans aren't in our natural habitat either and I don't see you calling the existence of cities and modern technology abuse. Personally I prefer relatively easy food, readily available water, near guaranteed shelter and safety, and medical treatment of I get too sick or something (Though I'm in the US so I don't rely on that one too much). Not everyone has those guarantees now, of course, but you know who DEFINITELY doesn't have those guarantees? Humans in their natural habitat Not that I think animals shouldn't be wild. But I also respect people who live a more natural lifestyle (As in like, tribes still living in the wild, not the latest fad diet or something). I just don't think it's wrong to provide those blessings that these animals can't get on their own. Well, rant over. My cat says hi

Silverfox Productions well we have scanned their brains and seen how ‘human like’ they really think. Most animals are just wanting to survive and have formed a symbiotic relationship (I’ll be it, a weak one) with their ‘captors’. Animals are not as emotionally intelligent as humans and that’s just a fact. I.E. a large parrot like a macaw actually has the brain capacity of a 7 year old, which is why it’s recommended to treat them almost like a human child.
