Can we just talk about Hilda for a second? It's AMAZING! I love this cartoon so much. It's beautiful, the colour styling is the best I've seen, maybe ever in tv? The animation is top shelf, the writing is top shelf.
I could not possibly love it more.
So, after I gush for a while I spend some time talking about animation tips, timing, arcs, all those neat things. Just go watch this show. You'll be a better animator.

Also your tuts on harmony are so nice and structured and answer so many of my doubts about the program that I just wanted to say thanks today for all the help and animation love. Cheers.

This was so sweet to watch This video is even better than what I was looking for! While Watching hilda I noticed how the animation moves and keept asking "how many frames are here? Why does it feels so natural?" While slowing the episode to count the frames, I was surprised there isn't actually that many frames and it was a normal 12 frames per second rate, it wasn't about the number of the frames but about how the frames were drawn. The animators did a fantastic job. They are truly masters and I can see the love they put in every scene. Also what a beautiful choice of an episode to breakdown I really loved watching it. This video is very unique there's no other video that breakdown animation this good. Hearing you praise the animation every time was very motivational I just wanted to go and start animating haha. Just want to say this's a great breakdown thank you it's very helpful

Love the series and thanks for such a great breakdown. If I may.. a bit of technical question: how much if any of Hilda characters is rigged? or is it only FBF? I've been learning Bob's Burger animation trying to understand their rigging process and was horrified (well disappointed) to learn that it is actually FBF from the second series onwards (which explained a lot actually). I'm generally baffled this question when trying to analyse the gazillion shows made using Toon Boom
@StylusRumble
@StylusRumble 4 жыл бұрын
Mercury shows are all rigged. They're super detailed 360 rigs. It's getting to the point where it can be hard to tell because the rigs have so many pieces they can all be adjusted to look like totally new pieces.

Earlier seasons are definitively 2D, but i'm curious about the 3rd season, because while some things are definitively 3D (cars and trains), I'm still unsure if most of the character are actually 3D with a really well made shader, 2D but with 3D models really helping or fully 2D because the animations are so damn smooth and well made.

@@StylusRumble having watched more carefully there is definitively some 3D involved, but with how well made the 2D is it is hard to decide on certain scenes They definitively have 3D models of the characters, and I think they use them for far away shots with a shader, but close ups/normal shots are 2D, maybe with 3D used to help/reference. I'm curious to see what will be your opinion :)

What questions could I expect to be asked if I were to attend an interview for a rigging position? Any tips would be appreciated.
@StylusRumble
@StylusRumble 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure, it's been a loooong time since I did a rigging interview. But a few things to keep in mind, usually by the time the interview you they really want you to be awesome. You've already met their requirements on paper, they just want to make sure you're not a jerk- and verify your paper stuff. So if you say on paper "master-class rigger with super powers," You gotta back that up. However, if you're a junior, they mostly are looking for the "not jerk" part. You might be asked some technical questions about the software, or your experience in it. How would you approach a difficult rig. At the end of the day, most of the leads I know want someone who has some problem solving skills, bonus if they've animated and can anticipate the common problems. Also, they want someone who will follow instructions (the lead decides how something is rigged, so if you rig your favorite way and they have to change it to the studio standard it makes them ragey AF.) They want someone who is not afraid to ask questions- but also knows how to use the help menu. "How should I approach this complex shoulder" = good question "What is the hotkey for this tool" = help menu question. Also, most important of all, don't be a jerk :)

If the industry switched back to flash, I would quit animation and paint watercolours for the tourists because I can't stand it lol. The big draw to Harmony is you can rig the characters. It was designed for cut out animation. Flash was designed for 2001 web design. The drawing tools are also way better. The palette library is a pain but makes colour swaps way easier. It's sister software storyboard pro makes setting up all the scenes way easier. Basically everything is easier and faster in harmony. I don't have any of the Hilda files, I just took a section of it and imported it into harmony. (because it's also super easy to import video, image sequences, and 3D assets)

The animation looks good. BUt honestly I do not get calling this beautiful. It sort of looks ugly. The colours are muted and washed out and boring. Only judging from this clip.
