The first episode in a new series "Animating Great Artists," where I show motion designers how to approach animating work of a variety of styles and show illustrators how to approach animating their own work.
In this episode, I'm tackling the work of Furry Little Peach aka Sha'an d'Anthes. I go through the process of animating frame by frame in photoshop and adding extra texture in after effects. Honestly this is such a fun and insightful video to watch! I find myself counting down to Thursday’s for your new tuts! I was wondering with the watercolour textures as oppose to key framing them would parenting the texture to the house essentially do the same thing or would it change the dynamics of the texture because the house has a turn motion to it? And as for an artist suggestion I was probably thinking Mark Conlan! Edit: Kimchi is hecking adorable. 10/10 best intern!

Thank you sooooo much! :D this is so amazing to hear. Ahhh, There is no position data in the house because every frame was drawn in photoshop it is just a series of images and AE has no idea that it's a moving object at all. If the house was a shape layer or the position was animated in AE, parenting would be the absolute best option. :D Thanks for the suggestion, I will be definitely hitting up Mr. Conlan soon. His work is great. Kimchi says thank you, well he would if he didn't sleep 23 hours a day. haha

Quick way to loop a texture (like your painted black paper) is to right click in the project panel and select interpret footage, you can then set it to loop 100 (or whatever floats your boat) and that should set you up nicely. Great tutorial once again Ben! really love this channel!

Its kinda of a complete different beast to tackle. I thinks its more guided towards animation and effects. Premiere is more like video editing in its basics form. If I'm allowed to say it like that. Im no animator nor a video-editor. This my view towards these two marvelous applications.

Really handy how you show how to add the guides for the timing and spacing. Im trying to get the basics under control. Though I'm learning it for 3d, the same applies there of course. Haven't gotten far yet since coding projects get me sidetracked each time hahaha..... But i improved the AnimDessin2 panel a lot ;)

Thanks so much! Yeah I wish there was a simple solution like a "loop pre-comp" property or something similar. It seems like a really common thing that people want to do by seems to guarded and unintuitive to achieve. :D

Haha, don't feel dumb! :) Anim Dessin makes it so much easier. It can be tricky to install, so be prepared for some googling if it doesn't work first time

Hi Ben, wonderful vid. One question - I am looking to create a similar project to this video but thought I could use Adobe Animate to create the rough pass and then throw it into PhotoShop for the colouring and textures. I figured animating the roughs in Animate would be a lot simpler since PhotoShop is a bit of a faff for this. Would you recommend such an approach, or do you feel keeping it all in PhotoShop as you have done above is best? Thank you! R

Can the Ae part be done with Ae CS6? Like the looping Also the wall with the smoke texture, how did the wall keep the texture when it turned sides? Isn't that smoke texture permanently in that corner of the screen? The house is multiple pics so how did Ae know the sides are changing?

this is probably such a silly thing to ask but what size canvas should i animate in to avoid pixelation and keep a clear image? ty!

No silly questions here! :D My canvas was 1920*1080 which was what my final video was rendered out at. You can go larger and scale it down when you save it if you want to make sure it'll be clear if it ever is used scaled up or if you're not sure how it will be exported. :)

I've tried to download Annim Dessin 2 but it's not showing up in my extension. Tried a couple of things but nothing seems to be working. One thought is that it's not compatible with the newer photoshop. Thoughts?

@@kennethbenson7331 Hi. How did you install it? I'm having the same problem. All three Anastasiy, Adobe and zxpinstaller extensions are failing, but the manual install worked. Problem: The scripts show up, (many and separate from each other) without a GUI panel. I have the timeline panel but not the AnimDessin2 panel. Did you solve that?

@@kjet.l I ended up installing it manually. It's really difficult sometimes for some reason. On my laptop it installed fine but when I upgraded I had to jump through all sorts of hoops. So you're not alone. If the panel doesn't appear when you click on in under extensions, I really don't know what's going on, sorry :( I wish I could be more helpful. Maybe the developer can help, sbaril.me/#photoshop-animation . This voodoo is beyond me.

Serious question, do you feel like to do this frame by frame animation in photoshop you need some sort of pen/tablet to do it right? I'm using keyboard and mouse and am intimidated by cel animation

I do think a graphics tablet makes this type of animation 90% easier although not 100% essential. I don't think I'd be able to manage without it. You can certainly learn this principles and make interesting stuff using simple shapes and elements that you can make quickly with a mouse. Working on transparent paper and scanning in like they did in the old days is also an option.

hope I still get an answer for this despite this video being a year old: does annim have a shortcut for checking each later? or you have to manually scrub thru the timeline?

Great tut as always Ben! I dont suppose anyone here has run into the Windows 10 quicktime error when Importing the PS file? Have tried troubleshooting and googling but the animation frames just come in as a layer stack for me. Exact error: "After Effects error: Problem with Photoshop doc "..." Quicktime is not installed or is too old of a version". Obviously everything is up to date :) Any tips welcome!

Thanks so much! Hmmm, Do you have a movie file in your .PSD I've had issues with that before. Removing that video layer and importing it again worked fine. I hope that helps, :)
