The "crazy" grasshopper is actually a locust. When grasshoppers brush up against each other too much (such as in a swarm) they will literally lose their minds and undergo a biological change that turns then into a different species. Super interesting and horrifying @_@

Thumper was treated the worst by Hopper essentially. Intentionally suppressing the urge by keeping him isolated from his species drives him mad constantly. Thumper likely in constant agony and we all know locusts in a swarm have such appetite they devastate anything which is denied to him. Worse than a starving pet. Wouldn't surprise me Thumper could be borderline cannibalistic if let loose.

When I returned to A Bug's Life, after only seeing it as a child, it's been fun looking back at how cool and badass Hopper is as a villain. Making sure to keep the status quo by making the ants feel powerless and worthless, and knows what is at stake if the balance of power is lost. He's not powerful because he is strong, he's powerful because he is an intelligent dictator who knows how to control power. Even after the ants fight back, he doesn't cower and give up, knowing that as long as he can kill their hope and bring back despair with a unbeatable army of Grasshoppers, that he can return to the status quo. and man... how do you make something as cute as a small bird and a triple of chicks into the most horrifying beasts that people would have nightmares about.

They didn’t have a spy. Jeffrey Kattzenberg was chairman at Disney before he became co-founder and CEO of Dreamworks. He knew about A Bug’s Life because it was in early production and made Antz (and had it released a month before this) because he’s petty and still held a grudge for being fired. All the major studios kinda knew what the others were doing without needing spys. Because they all post announcements and casting calls in the trade magazines, like “Hollywood Reporter” or “Deadline Hollywood”

FYI: this move is a reinterpretation of "The magnificent seven" (1960, a must), which is also an american retelling of "The seven samurai" (1954) by Akira Kurosawa (even a greater must in the lists of a movie junkie). In my opinion, Kurosawa's is best (he is a GREAT director); however, the acting in the 1960's movie is incredible (it IS Yul Brynner, after all. And Bronson, and Coburn, and Wallach... )😉

Fun fact: Ants can lift between fifty to five THOUSAND times their own weight depending on their species. Leaf Cutter Ants can lift fifty times, American field ants can lift five thousand.

it's a crime that there wasn't an Oscar for animation the year this movie was released or any year prior 2002

15:08 I also love the _Dumbo_ reference here, with the cookie brand being called "Casey Jr.'s", after the circus train in that movie.

One thing I love about this movie is that the main character actually ISNT the one who’s hiding who he truly is, rather, he’s the one being deceived. It’s so much more fun to watch a movie when you can get behind the main character and not be constantly waiting for shit to go down when the inevitable is revealed. Misunderstandings involving the main character always hurt to watch, and are rarely pulled off well

I watched A Bug's Life constantly since I was a toddler. Whenever hopper is about to be on screen, I hide behind a couch, plant, chair or whatever object I can get behind because he's so intimidating. I always loved this movie. 10/10
