I gotta nitpick and say that the first scene with Akira saving the rabbit has some narrative purpose in establishing Akira as someone willing to defend those in need and someone with a lot of guts, which I'm pretty sure was the only reason he was able to become Devil Man. More over, it establishes the tone of the rest of the series, along with the opening scene, as a dark series where justice and beauty don't necessarily win because there are people willing to do horrible things for no real reason. The author was going for an anti-war message with the anime after all.

Angel Flores i can see where ur coming from but as a massive devilman fan i have to say, the rabbit killing came across as unreasonable cruelty, they couldve done the scene just as well by having the biker gang bully someone or having them violently beat up a guy(even thats going a bit too far) considering how young there meant to be.
@re1010

Shershah Adnan that's the whole beauty of nagai, when there is a limit that society would never reach, he goes for it. The devilman manga, while pretty good, does have some very average art. But anyway, if society refuses to show cruelty, go nagai will just do it. He's got a one way ticket to vip hell if his version of God is real.

R E ok i understand that but in this ovas case they shouldve shown a more realistic depection to teen cruelty, cause what they did while possible yes, isnt that common, while it makes sense for the world to be cruel after the whole demon reveal the mentioned rabbit thing before that it just feels inane.

I can see your point, but Akira isn't suposse to have guts, he is a coward in the manga, that only changes when he becomes Devilman, in the Manga, Miki was getting atacked by bullies and Akira was to scared to do anything about them, when Ryo shows up to scare them away with a gun. Kinda like Devilman Crybaby when you really look at it! XD

Well, he is a villain. So it's not as if we're meant to agree with him. It's kinda fun to see that madcap logic - that he's tunnel-visioned on the morality of killing without considering the morality of causing suffering. Plus that smug "UUUUHhhmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!" when he thinks he has a gotcha point pushes this scene over the edge of hilarity for me.

Something I've always found interesting is the rave scene. It has been portrayed differently in several media: Since the original manga was made in the 70's, the author portrayed the rave as being filled with Hippie-looking people and if it was animated I guess the music being played there would've been Jimmy Hendrix-like stuff. Then this OVA series was made in the late 80's, early 90's and it has the rave scene being filled with Hair metal enthusiasts. Finally, Devilman Crybaby has the rave scene in a modern rave bar with techno/pop music. Really interesting huh?

That sure was a statement. Someone not liking something you liked isn't a crime, and I don't see how any of that stuff you went off about even enters into it. Instead of being insulting for no reason, why not tell us why you liked the show? I'm much more interested to hear the OVA's merits than the string of non-sequitors you strung together.
@sucklet1791
@sucklet1791 9 жыл бұрын
ScttDynamite220 Why didn't I say why I enjoyed the OVA? Well, let me do that now. While Devilman does little justice to the Mangas, it still provides for an excellent OVA, giving the audience various introductory notes without actually having to point that much out in text, dialogue, or any other form of words, instead, we are simply presented with a glimpse into the early world where Demons roamed the earth, conquering and being conquered, eating and killing, survival at it's most ruthless. After enough of this, we are then brought to the present day earth (or possibly an Earth that's like two weeks in the future) presenting us with an afternoon of Akira, a caring young man, we can tell many things about him from the next scene, in which he protects a lone surviving bunny from some thugs, getting harmed in the process. From this scene, we are able to see that while he's little more than an average teenager, he has an abundance of kindness, compassion, and reason. Now, while I could go on and on picking apart every scene like this, I have better things to do with my time than argue with youTube scum. allow me to put it simply, Devilman is filled with various nuances and subtle messages including equality and the futility of rivalry. While lacking in various areas, it still makes up for it with the fluid animation, well thought plot, and various arcs brimming with originality rather than the dumbed down, stereotypes and cliches that prevail in various anime today.

While I kinda doubt you really threw the tape in the river and it was most likely for comedic effect, I kinda hate when reviewers do the whole 'mwahaha I have the power to make sure no one see's this film'. Thanks, so glad you had the ability to put something out there for everyone to make their own decisions, yet took it into your own hands to make sure no one could ever watch it. Regardless of how bad something is if it's damn near impossible to find anywhere the least you could do is preserve a copy of it. Archiving media is important...burning a copy of a DVD that's mass produced is one thing, throwing a VCR tape of a well known yet extremely rare copy of an uncut movie into the river based on the idea that 'no one should see it cause I decided it was so bad' is another. Or maybe I'm just being overly sensitive about the loss of old titles....what ever.

I actually liked these OVAs despite how weird they were. They were my first experience with gory violent anime shows. And for those curious there actually is a third in the OVA, called The Apocalypse of Devilman. As far as I know though it's never been dubbed. More is explained in it that was not talked about in the first two OVAs such as why Ryo changed. I don't claim to know the exact details but it's something to do with him turning out to be carrying the soul of Satin himself inside who has taken over Ryos personality similar to how Akira did with Amon.

A lot of the hate Sage is getting seem to boil down the the fact that he didn't do any really research on the source material. But the thing is, that isn't really his job. He reviews dubbed anime. Not subbed anime, not manga and not franchises. So everything he says here does not represent any kind of critique on the series in general, or even the subbed version. It's just this. As a single solitary OVA.
@ChandlerVanFossen
@ChandlerVanFossen 3 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but that is not how it should be done. When reviewing an anime, film, or anything, you need to at least educate yourself and understand the original source material if the thing you are reviewing is based on something. And therefore, educate the audience to know what they are getting into. Bennett did no such research in his early videos and therefore did not understand certain things about the anime he reviewed and bitched about it (Akria and Grave of the Fireflies).
@kayleighbrown459
@kayleighbrown459 3 жыл бұрын
@@ChandlerVanFossen I'm sorry, but I don't agree with that. A good piece of media should be able to stand on it's own, independent of it's source material. You shouldn't need to do homework in order for a piece of media to make sense. I agree that an understanding of source material is probably required when doing a deep dive on something or an analysis of the whole franchise, but that isn't what this is. It's a comedic "This is why I don't think this OVA works."
@ChandlerVanFossen
@ChandlerVanFossen 3 жыл бұрын
@@kayleighbrown459 That's an understandable opinion. I may not agree with it, but I am not gonna go out of my way to demean you for it. At least to my knowledge.

@@ChandlerVanFossen Can't fault the guy for not following the crowd tho. Devilman is one of those pinpoint anime, ya know. Like one that's kinda set in people's minds and hearts. Like, I came across a negative review of Berserk the other day so nothing is above criticism.
@ChandlerVanFossen
@ChandlerVanFossen 3 жыл бұрын
@@kayleighbrown459 Still, If you’re going to do a review, you owe it to yourself to do at least a little research on the source material before doing a review. Or at the very least, understand the themes or message the media is giving if it's not based on a certain source, like say an event in history or something like that. And by that I don't think Bennett's older videos, like this one, do him any justice as a critic. He comes across as if he knows what he's talking about, yet he clearly didn't understand the themes and ideas presented in both the original source material and the adaptation. And that includes his reviews of Akira and Grave of the Fireflies, both of which were horribly done in piss poor criticism and bad faith arguing. And that didn't change for years from 2011 to 2014 to even now in a few cases. Especially since he told me himself that even if he could go back and rework those old reviews, his criticism would not change. The same criticism that can be considered either flawed, biased, factually incorrect, or anything close to those things. As far as I know, THAT is not how you review anything. In my opinion, if you want to watch better and honest reviews, I suggest Studio Chojin (Mostly his dissection videos on Bennett's Akira and Grave of the Fireflies reviews) and KaiserBeamz.

All the flaws pointed out in this review exist only in the englush dubbed version: the dialogues have been totally changed and make non sense at all; for example: in the studio scene, Ryu never claims that demons are not natural beings; at the hospital, he never says that human could destroys demons by using atomic bombs: he just points out how demons are the natural enemy of mankind and, when they were asleep, the only enemy mankind ever had was itself; moreover: all the continuity mistakes are corrected in the third act of the original Devilman comic book, which, sadly, had never been adapted into OAV; so, if Sage would have read the comic, he couldn't film this video.

It doesn't really matter what the source material is. Sage reviews Dubbed anime. Whether that means the slock or gold. None are let off if they fail. As for the manga excuse. You should watch anything he does on Love Hina. I don't get your point: in fact some of the flaws he points out do not exist; he could watch the original version and realize the error made by the translator. But no, he didn't; why? I don't konow and I don't care. But, in order not to say a false thing and make jokes for making jokes' sake, he could give a deeper view to the OAV series; as he has done, he lost his credibility.

To be fair, the original Devilman manga drew out the origin story quite a bit (and had the underground rave, although being written in the 70's it was more of a hard rock party), so you could argue it's just being faithful to Go Nagai's original vision. On the other hand, 40 minutes? Geez...

Watching a shitty dub and reviewing it? Come on man that like beating up a person in an wheel chair. People complain and cry about over excessive gore but don't realize there a over saturation of nearly everything. To much harem with the same theme, to much shonen where the main character is perfect, and to much seninen that try's to hard to be dark. Everything is a copy or contrived these days, but Devilman was original for its time.

the problem with franchises like devilman is that they've been remade so many times in japan that short projects like this adaptaion mostly concern themselves with being less a stand alone story and more a "greatest hits" album of the original stories most memorable moments. while i wouldnt call it the worst brand of fanservice, its definitely a very impenetrable brand of fanservice. they dont bother explaining stuff like The character motivations or Ryo's sudden turn to misanthropy because the original creators were playing to an audience thats already invested, and already knows the context. this is pretty much just "iconic devilman moments without huge spoilers: the movie"

If you had seen the recent Devilman Crybaby, the bullies who killed the rabbits earlier in the first OVA were meant to turn up again later on in the 3rd OVA during Mikiko's (the other Miki as everyone calls her Miko) introduction before she herself turns into a Devilwoman after going out with one of the bullies. It makes sense after watching the complete story in Devilman Crybaby and reading the original Manga how important the earlier bullies were meant to change their ways and try to help Akira when every other human was turning against him. But then again, the 3rd and 4th OVA never got done and this was all we saw from them.

That whole scene with the ranting turtle demon is so stupid. It’s a false equivalency that’s trying to make Akira out to be as bad as the demons despite the fact the turtle is actively making his victims suffer and the turtle is clearly aware of this and enjoys it! Maybe it’s because he’s just a psycho ranting to justify himself, but killing someone to free them from suffering is vastly different from killing just for the hell of it.

Say what you want about Devilman Crybaby, but a lot of the plot points are done a lot better. The bit with the rabbit is a lot more relevant and less completely hateful. The party is already happening and Ryo just takes advantage of it. The monster that kills Akira's mom just happens to meet Akira and doesn't moralize at him. Also while the misanthropy is definitely there, it is balanced out with some belief in the good of humanity. Though this OVA probably had better fight scenes.

With respect, Bennet, that speech you like to give about how anime was just "better" in the 90s is pure, unadulterated, nostalgic bullshit. Anime has ALWAYS consisted of mostly crap, with maybe 15-25% good, and about 5% fantastic. The ONLY things that have changed between then and now are the art style, the mediums availability, and the specific TYPE of crap. Instead of ultra-violence, we have cutesy-waifu-shit. I get why you'd prefer the former, but to say that the GOOD modern anime doesn't compare to the good ones from the 90s is simply idiotic. And I CANNOT have any respect for someone who allows such narrow-minded preconceptions to prevent them from recognizing beauty in art. EDIT: It occurs to me that you may have realized the error of your ways in the 2 years since you recorded this. If so, feel free to ignore my artsy-hipster mic drop.

***** Which would make sense, if I had done that. But since I didn't, you instead come across as an idiot. *THAT* is my point. *Where*, exactly, did I state my opinions as fact? When I said the majority of anime has always been shit? Is that REALLY what you chose to focus on, the second sentence in a paragraph-long comment about open-mindedness towards art? OF COURSE that's not fact; anyone who bothered to use their damn BRAINS would recognize that. Particularly since I used words like "maybe" and "about", to show that they weren't actually meant to be accurate, but to illustrate a point, ergo hyperbole. What, are we all supposed to include *DISCLAIMERS* for everything we say? Sorry to break it to you, but that's not how TALKING works. Or is it just that two sentences was as much as you could handle? Didn't bother reading any further than that? If I'm coming across as rude, it's because I am. I don't coddle grown-ass adults, nor do I suffer fools lightly. If someone isn't going to use logic and reason (in other words, THINK), then I'm going to treat them like the toddlers they're mimicking. Nothing personal.

It's a very debatable point. The '80 decade was one of the golden age of animation (extension of the hobby to older audience, the advent of war drama with Gundam, the height of space opera inspired by Star wars and Star Trek, the creation of Studio Ghibli, the blooming of high school comedy genre with Urusei Yatsura, the creation of OVA format...). The second goes from mid '90 to mid '00, the first half of the '90 being ladden with a major economic crisis. Like it or not, there has been no major innovation in the industry since then, only popular success with recycled formulas for most part ("code geass" a.k.a. legend of galactic heroes' poor man, "trapped in video game" rehashes of //hack, fanservice light novel bullshit seen 5000 times already with little modification, more fetish harem comedies, lots of awful remakes/reboots (Saint-Seiya Omega, Gatchaman, the new Arslan Senki series yucks...)) In hindsight, you may at least say that Bennett is half right.
@nozoto
@nozoto 7 жыл бұрын
1995 - 2006. A decade of innovation, right. "Ghost in the shell" proved everyone that animation could be mature; by raising important philosophical questions regarding transhumanism for instance. Nobody in his right mind would say that this animated movie is a cartoon for weirdoes. It's a classic period. As for Evangelion, it wasn't exactly innovative but it dusted off tired characterization codes. This period was an experimental one as well, as demonstrated by interesting projects as "Gankutsuou" or "Redline". It had no definite trend, so it made for a wider variety of innovative titles, helped by animation budget being less constraining thanks to computer technology. 2006 year turned it around with edgy and moe bullshit slowy becoming the norm, because of "Elfen Lied" and "Air". Animation industry has gone consistently downhill, to the point it cristallized the anime community into a bunch of self-centered manchildren who basically praise style over substance.

devilman is a magnum opus. The manga is great and the ovas which there are three of them are pretty good too. This is adapting a manga pretty well, though not perfect. It's just that it's also a series of episodes. I don't see what flaw there could be to it other than the third episode is missing. In the manga, the bullies become friends. They just pick on the girl and the guy a bit but not ridiculously. The rabbit thing is something in the past. the ovas miss out a great thing with Satan/Ryo Asuka coming to his rescue. Delivering an awesome line that's later transformed into a poignant line in the Amon manga. By Lady devil man they pretty much have sex with a complicated thing where satan splits in two and doesn't know who he is. Well neither does Akira but he's pretty cool with it afterwards. Also you're wrong about the back story. It explains their nature and power to merge, and that happens all the time. As well as their violent nature. You find out that all of this is just something ryo made up to save Akira. The party doesn't have to be days, and they could have come and go until then. The series explains the demons aren't just running amok. Their killing but they also have a plan and are more organize with multiple demons helping and working together. It's not about being subtle. The turtle thing is torturing him. Even just seeing it in the review the scene works. Though getting called out is a bit of a jump. It sounds like the american release combined two different ovas but not the third. Ryo is making guesses. It's normal for guesses to be wrong or to change. especially as his subconcious turns back into Satan. Ryo says that the demons need a plan because they fear human weapons. Silene also knew and loved Amon. It's only that guy that loves her one sidely. This whole part is awesome. This american release lacks the third and most explanatory OVA. The ending with silene is good, her trying so hard and dying thinking she succeeded and right before is great.

About the "why don't they use guns thing", I recently picked up an official translation of the 1972 manga (or at least I'm sure it's official) and while reading it I wound up reading a scene where akira asks ryo, why don't they just use guns, and/or a more effectively weapon? Where ryo replies that some of the demons are strong enough to withstand, or rival an atom bomb. Also, something they didn't mention say in the manga (or at least yet) is that it looks like the demons can pop out from almost anywhere, and I would not like to run out of ammo when I have some demons trying to kill me. Ryo also mentioned that people are gonna refuse to believe that they're real if ryo and/or akira told them. And I probably said many things that are incorrect, or stupid, and if so, please let me know.

You may notice that the latter method of "critique" is the one taken up but the vast majority of you-tube reviewers for the sake of popularity; but I dare say it is the method that does the least service to human intellect.

If all your going to do is listen to a bad dub and crack a few jokes at out of context clips, you firstly have no place calling yourself a critic, and secondly the only people you're going to sway to your opinions are those who couldn't think for themselves in the first place and look to internet personalities to confirm their biases.

The first OVA is superior to the rushed first episode of Crybaby. The second OVA which adapts the Sirene fight is also better and more fleshed out here than episode 5 of Crybaby. The animation is near excellent and extremely detailed. The music by Kenji Kawai is bloody excellent. You need to a be a moron not to see the amount of work that went into them. Let's just admit it, anyone who thinks the first two OVAs are half baked are complete morons who don't know a single clue about anime. Nothing screams half baked about the OVAs. Nothing. The production values ran up to a million yen and it shows, as every animation sequence in them screamed high quality. www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/19530 www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/18067 At this point, what should I tell you other than you should most likely stop watching anime. I feel like those precious frames are being wasted on a complete plebeian. The Amon OVA was nowhere on the level of the first two. Get real, and better yet, get a pair of glasses.

Funny thing is Devilman was originally a Shonen manga back in 1972. And for those who don’t know what Shonen manga or anime are , it’s a manga or anime primarily targeted towards teenage boys (12-18). Of course Shonen manga are “popular” with all demographics, but it’s targeted demographic are boys in their teens. Now most Shonen were bloody and violent in the 80’s and 90’s just as long as they weren’t over the top with too much gore. Well Devilman was over the top with gore and sex. And was then placed in Seinen magazines. Seinen is manga or anime for adult men.

So, I don't know if this is just me, but there's some weird noises starting at 17:15 that remind me of the jump sound effect in an old video game or something. I don't know if there's something wrong with the transfer, or something went awry during the upload, but... yeah.

I think they're from the "hitting the screen with the big book of morality" scene. and then edited into the wrong part of the video.

"WHAT'S THE POINT OF THE BUNNY SCENE???" holy fucking shit. I wonder if Bennett also watched Lord of the Rings and didn't understand why it had to establish the Hobbits as pure-hearted.

Dumbass, Sage very well gets that thats the point, they just went way too far with it for the sake for being edgey. Thats what Sage's pissed about.

We know that Akira is good person. But we don't really something like this. If they can not do a good one then don't do anything at all like that.

This video is shameful. Literally EVERYTHING he said in the beginning, which basically amounted to "Devilman was made because 80s otaku were frustrated, socially awkward dorks who liked to have power fantasies about murdering people", was completely wrong in every way. He made up his own smug, prejudiced "headcanon" of what Devilman is and why it exists instead of spending a MINUTE doing a Google search to find out that 1. Devilman is based on a 70s manga 2. The manga is shonen and was made more for teenage boys than for nerdy adults/"otaku" 3. Devilman's message, if you actually experience the whole story, is one of the most anti-war ones out there. This guy is a clown who lacks the most basic understanding of storytelling and animation but thinks he's a "cynical anime veteran sick of the bullshit" because he watched Manga Entertainment dubs in the 90s.

OVERRULED GOOD SIR!!! He technically said that, "Only a demon can fight another demon." He did not say that only a demon could "kill" a demon. Killing and fighting have similar executions, but are not the same thing.
