This is a pet peeve of my so keep that in mind. Saying Jesus was fiction is just flat out stupid, you can deny his divinity all you want. But to say at the very least their was not Jewish Reformer in the time of the of the first century who was crucified by the Romans and perceived as many to be the son of the Jewish god is idiotic. It's like claiming the Buddha, Mohammad, Confucius, Joseph Smith, or Christopher Hitchens didn't exist.

Pretty much the general opinion of it from the day ADV sicced it upon the west. The only way you could like this thing is the way Sage says he does: fascination.
@drhploveboat9 жыл бұрын
the story for this series long predates Ninja Scroll. it's based on a novel that combined fiction with historical events. the original title translated was Samurai Resurrection, or Samurai Reincarnation, not Ninja Resurrection. the anime isn't the first adaptation of it, the story as has been done several times as live action feature films, most recently in 2003. but the best known version came out in 1981, staring Sonny Chiba as Jubei Yagyu, and Tomisaburo Wakayama playing his father Munenori Yagyu. audiences in the west would known Wakayama as Lone Wolf from the Lone Wolf & Cub film series, and they would know Sonny Chiba as Hattori Hanzo from Kill Bill. in Japan however, Jubei Yagyu was Sonny Chiba's most famous recurring role, having played him many times in film and television, and Jubei Yagyu was an historical figure. in Japan, Jubei Yagyu is way more famous than Jubei from Ninja Scroll.

As a practicing Catholic, not only is this anime only the second I've seen that directly references the Shimbara Rebellion, the first being Samurai Champloo, but it manages to out-crazy Samurai Champloo. And that had a St. Francis Xavier caricature in the form of his grandson, in which he appears as Jewish, cross-eyed as fuck, a lech, runs a underground club that has massive statues of the Crucifixion (with one statue of Jesus slinging the Cross over his shoulder like he's Paul Bunyan), wields a giant shotgun/blunderbuss hybrid, and is also a Japanese con artist. Ninja Resurrection is an adaptation of a Japanese novel called Makai Tensho. You can find an article about it on Wikipedia. I don't think the book has been published in English, but there HAVE been several live-action films based on it. If you want to get an idea on how the story of this anime MIGHT have ended, then you can check out those films at least. Fun fact: The book's main villain WAS a ninja who used to serve Amakusa Shirou & he only became a ninja to learn how to summon demons & create undead. The synopsis says he brought back BOTH Jubei Yagyu & Amakusa Shirou as undead in the book, but I don't know what their roles in the original story were after that. All I have to go on is the synopsis & that's it.
@rhett881911 ай бұрын
I read a little about this too. Going off what I know and this synopsis, I can see why it failed with audiences, as it seems to be going really fast and loose with the source material.
@averagejoe514511 ай бұрын
@@rhett8819 Most adaptations of the story play fast & loose with it. There have been several live-action films based on it. Shirou Amakusa is usually the ultimate villain in all of them as opposed to his underling in the story.

The 1981 movie adaptation by Kinji Fukasaku kind of showed that Shiro lost faith in God after seeing all of his followers get butchered and basically went to the devil as a means of revenge against the Shogunate. That adaptation makes the Shogunate look just as bad there considering they behead women and children. It didn't really feel like Shiro was evil incarnate there.

Ok the part where Japanese Jesus here is turning into a dragon shouting "MY FATHER HAS HEARD ME AND GRANTED MY PRAYER!" is about the funniest goddamn thing I've seen.

Bennett I'm actually disappointed in you, at 16:28 you could have easily made a Judge Doom/Roger Rabbit reference (When I killed your brother, I talked JUST LIKE THIS) but no, shame on you dude!

17:57 What came to mind was G. W. Bailey sicing his doberman on Andrew MacCarthy in Mannequin: "Get 'im, Terminator!"

Yup, and they even used Amakusa Shiro as the Big Bad in Samurai Shodown. Trippy! Plus, who can forget the law of inverse ninja lethality? If there's only one, he'll be the deadliest mo-fo ever. If there's dozens, they're just common mooks.

This anime was based on a live action movie called Samurai Armageddon. Which had Jubei fight Shiro, his father, and Musashi. I had to track it down because I wanted to know how this anime could have ended..

That face in the beginning is exactly how I felt when I first came across this. -_- I feel your pain bro. I couldn't believe that it ended like that, and I have the DVD. Yet I wanted to watch the rest of it, but I can't because I don't think they continued it. 8(

Well, that was fun. Can we have the Scientology JFKish anime now? The one where Lord Xenu killed L. Ron Hubbard with and exploding conch shell?

To me this looks like Berserk but... stupid. It has similar imagery and core themes, and both animes end right when shit gets actually serious.Only difference is Berserk did it well, and this was confusing.

A lot of scenes in this looks like they’re right out of Mike Mignola’s sketchbook.
