Miyazaki is a great director, but it was actually Yoshifumi Kondō who directed Whisper of the Heart!

I haven’t seen all of Ghibli’s movies, but the most impactful was by far Spirited Away. It’s the film I always come back to for comfort, because of how much I resonate with the message about growing up.

Slight correction: Lupin III Castle of Cagliostro was Miyazaki's first directed film, but not his first directed work. That was Future Boy Conan, released around the same time.

As much as I love the movie, I sometime wish Miyazaki would come back and make a series that more follows his original manga, because wow that manga was wild.

Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.] - (AMPLIFIED version) NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus. Xx

Why Miyazaki will be remembered more than others : Because he chose creativity not industry

Miyazaki is basically the grandpa of modern anime.

Ponyo is one of the most detailed pieces I have ever seen Its not as artsy as spirited away or princess mononoke, but the very first scene takes my breath away everytime! Its unique, full of life, the music during the climax makes me feel the pasion Miyazaki and Hisaishi felt during the process of creating it, cant describe how it makes me feel, to be honest with you. Every movie has its own magic, cant truly choose one...

Princess Mononoke is one of the best Animated movies ever

Beware that studio Ghibli isn't only a Miyazaki project. Without Takahata and Suzuki he wouldnt had the idea, the will and/or the mean to achieve that. And most of the decision either manegerial or commercial weren't Miyazaki decisions. Same, Whisper of the heart isn't a Miyazaki movie.

Spirited away is easily one of my top ten favorite movies. Along with Nausicca which in my opinion is hugely underrated

Howl's Moving castle is by far, the most memorable for me. The soundtrack will forever be etched in my mind.

Wish all anime nowadays were like this instead of harem anime based on light novels with most focuses put on fan service.

For some confused, Whisper of the Heart was not directed by Miyazaki but he did write the screenplay. The director was Yoshifumi Kondo.

Miyazaki was a true story teller. That's why he's remembered to this day.

The crazy thing is how accomplished he is as an manga artist as well. His manga "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" has such an amazing world building, great art and everything else. I originally read the whole thing nearly two decades ago as a gift from my mom and it changed everything for me and til this day his work has influenced my art and illustrations.

In my earlier days practicing my art, I would meticulously watch one anime movie a day, and deconstruct the artwork. Eventually I got to the Ghibli catalog, and it completely blew me away when you break it down frame by frame, how much detail is actually in there. Not to say it's the MOST elaborate of all time, *cough* Akira, but still such a wonder.

Hate to nitpick, but didn't Kondo direct Whisper of the Heart?

Recently, Mononoke has taken the top spot that once belonged to Howl's Moving Castle, for me. While I still like Howl, I come to appreciate his other films more as time goes on. Oddly, Spirited Away is probably my least favorite(but I still love it).

I feel you should do a video on anime influences outside of Japan. While I understand you couldn't put everything in the video, one important (or at least I feel) aspect of Miyazaki's influence is from outside sources, especially from one man, Jean Giraud, otherwise known as Moebius. If you take a look at Moebius' artwork alongside Miyazaki you can see a lot of similarities, especially with Nausicaa's glider and a short comic by Moebius called Arzach.

This is my favorite of your videos, I've watched it twice now. It's an absolutely excellent tribute to Miyazaki, and one of the most informed and comprehensive of it's kind.

My favorite is Spirited Away. He came back out of retirement this year and is working on a new movie.

Cagliostro his directorial debut? No way. Miyazaki's, and Takahata's, works on TV are criminally overlooked and as or more important as their works on the big screen. My favorite (Ghibli) movie must be Kiki, and my maybe second favorite Whispers of the Heart was not directed by him.

Words can't describe how much I love Miyazaki's work. Every frame could be a stand alone piece of art. I would give anything to be able to draw like the animators at Studio Ghibli.

My favourite Miyazaki film is The Wind Rises. My favourite moment in a Miyazaki film is when the robot warrior hands the flower to the two heroes on Laputa. Thank you for your hard work, I enjoy the videos you make very much.

Nice analysis. Been rewatching some of these films recently and I agree with the progression they have. One correction: Whisper of The Heart wasn't directed by Miyazaki. While he wrote the screenplay, it was directed by one of Ghibli's top director's at the time, Yoshifumi Kondo. Kondo was pinned to a successor to Miyazaki and Takahata, but alas, he died from a heart attack. It was commonly attributed that his death was caused by overwork, and influenced Miyazki to take it easy later on.

I started with Kiki's Delivery Service. I watched it on VHS at my nana's house when I was little; no idea what age specifically. Later I saw Spirited Away since it won the Oscar in 2002, a year a favourite animated movie of mine was also nominated- Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. I had to watch the movie which beat the movie I was in love with as a kid. I then fell in love with Spirited Away and was totally okay it beating my horse movie hahah bought some of the manga/graphic novels for Spirited Away and the rest is history.

I went woth my mother to see "The wind rises", but I didn't tell her anything about it. When we were about to enter the cinema, she saw the poster and told me, enraged: "you are taking my to watch an animated film? A cartoon?". When the film enden, she told me: "This was incredible! Pure poetry!" Thats's te power of Miyazaki.

I usually love your videos but this one... not so much, I don't think there was much of a through-line especially in relation to the title, it also lists off milestones in his career without giving them proper context like the development of the Nausicaa Manga for Animage his meeting Toshio Suzuki the then editor who is criminally underrepresented considering a lot of the achievements with regards to studio management are his. I think it's very telling that your research was from personal context, articles and various forms of online documentation, whenever you do get to a part of his career that is better represented by these sources the video benefits from it, I'd recommend you check out "The Art of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Watercolor Impressions", "Starting Point 1979-1996" and track down "Yasuo Otsuka's Joy in Motion" to get a greater understanding of his career, I think you're a talented writer and video editor and with better sources you could make some great videos sorry for being a nitpicking shite.

Really amazing video, a very great take on Miyazaki's life and impact over the world of anime. Also, I'd like to ask you guys *what is your top 5 ghibli movies and why* ? :) Mine are Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa, Whisper Of The Heart, Spirited Away & Grave Of The fireflies.

Miyazaki is great but the person who truly should be evaluated is Osamu Tezuka. I would say that he was the very first man who inspired the world of comics and animations in Japan with various kinds of philosophies or some great messages. Tezuka was a surgeon and survived air raids during his adolescence. All of those his experiences formed his views of life and death and these are reflected in his a lot of works. By the way, I like Mononoke the most. The music, descriptions of nature and the plot.

My favorite has to be Mononoke. When i first watched it i didn't really know about Ghibli or Miyazaki, but the moment it ended i just had to start watching them all and learning about the studio's work.

I have seen that old anime movie but under it's English language title Panda and the Magical Serpent. I have the DVD that came out back in the $1 DVD years from back in 2006. Found it at Walmart back in 2006 along with Kimba the White Lion and an anime version of Thumbalina that had a character that looked alot like Jirachi.

So how did he change Anime? You asked that in the title but didn't bring it up in the video at all. Miyazaki didn't change anything, the rest of the industry is the same as it was before him, with all the issues that caused him to leave it and make his own studio still there.

You completely glossed over Mirai Shonen Conan. It's a 26 episode TV anime from 1978 that was directed by Miyazaki.
