Hi there mate. how much do you know about the industry? and are there any western (European) studios that you think would be open to making anime? i have an idea for something that's never been done before but i have no idea who to pitch it to......

This was really nice but i think its missing which shows lead to the creation of genre that extremely dominate anime today which is harem. I'm not quite sure when anime started getting that kind of influence but I think it should be a part of this to show what lead to that kind of development. Not that I think its good or bad but definitely it changed the ratio of what kinds of anime comes out these days.

Problem is his statement wasn't 100% false. It is also fact that more and more animes are coming out every year, which means there's also more space for shitty titles. Apart from that there is the shift in the prominence of manga-adapted animes to light novel-adapted animes. Mangas serialized on magazines like Shounen Jump or Gangan have their popularity contests, where mangas that are not popular enough are axed in favor of opening up the space for newer mangas to enter circulation. This means unless you managed to built your series to become a massive franchise prior to quality drop(a la Bleach), you will constantly have to keep your manga's quality up lest you ended up jobless. The issue is that light novels doesn't have that. While breaking into the light novel industry still is no cake walk, once you're in, you may as well consider yourself in for life. Light novels can be written at a far quicker rate than mangas and even if they don't sell well neither the author nor the publisher suffers anything as long as they can afford the quantity over quality approach. This allows light novel to create enough content to become a 12 episode anime series at a much quicker rate than mangas, even if their stories are nothing but recycled, shallow archetypes. But this is still a massive problem, with the current state of the anime industry struggling to adapt into internet age(no one's buying the DVDs when you can watch for free online), is it really good for them to keep plunging the industry's money and manpower into making anime with the "quantity over quality" mentality? I'm not saying all LN animes suck or all mangas are better than LNs, but the point stands is regardless of whether they are adapted from manga, from LN, or is original, otaku aimed animes are the niche products and are doing more harm to the industry than good. And despite that, ever since 2010, there had constantly been an influx of 5-10 harem/fanservice/moe constantly coming out *every season*, further diluting the struggling niche market out even thinner. Are you saying this is a good business model?

I sleep 2-3hrs a night (no hyperbole). I have back, neck, elbow, and wrist pains every other day. I'm always stressed over the next job (or non-existent job). You're either drawing, studying, or managing clients and/or social - and if you're not doing those things, you're always going to be THINKING about them. All this while getting paid very little - or people hitting you up wanting you to do free work. But I love it because I have the freedom to do whatever I want - and that is an absolutely invaluable thing to have in life.

Anime keeps getting better and if you can't see that it is a bummer because the stories that are being told and how they are told are great and better than a lot America is offering.

It's extremely rare to find fans out there who are curious about the history of anime!!! A fan that is so passionate that is curious to learn about how a specific cartoon from another country develops over the years. This video made me realize how hard working, disciplined and dedicated the Japanese are when it comes to animation. It really sucks that the animators barely get paid much at all. However they'll still have the passion to create and bring beautiful drawings to life!!! Thank you for such an amazing video.

I can't be the only one who sees the evolution of anime to look somewhat like painful de-evolution after a certain point. Watching as clearly defined cheekbones, bodies, and joints slowly get more and more simple, more and more blob-like.
@NewBlueTrue
@NewBlueTrue 4 жыл бұрын
Damyon's Music Hut I speculating but it probably has to do with how quickly anime in churned out now. Animators are forced to produce a lot of work in an unrealistically short amount of time for low wages, so they don’t really have time to pay attention to detail. I’ve heard of some anime tv show episodes not being ready until hours before they’re supposed to air causing the quality in animation to drop. Then when it is time for dvd release, they add more detail to scenes and characters.

What are your actual complaints, moe and "emo" stuff? The former is a genre and you not liking it is personal taste, it's self centred to go around saying it's all crap. By emo I guess you mean failing at being edgy and that's always been prevalent whenever someone writes a story with dark elements. Anime is being made much more frequently nowadays which is why you're likely noticing it more now.
@mysttale7893
@mysttale7893 7 жыл бұрын
It's fair to not want the over saturation. I suppose I have a broad taste and am able to put up with generic moeshit to find something good. I still stand by my statement that there's more diversity than there's ever been, however. The surplus of shows gives us both rehashed shit and more original stuff.

I completely agree. I just came to look into what other people have to say about animation styles after getting annoyed with the way an anime I was watching looked. I think a big part of the problem is that so much of this anime seems to use the same line width for *every* line, so characters and backgrounds don't feel integrated so much as they feel weak and faded. You can have integrated characters and background while also setting both in place, and giving them some visual weight. Maybe \*part* of the problem is that there's too much shit anime that I watch of this bland style, which could make this 2010s plain-moe style nowadays seem even more plain, but I will never understand the extent of the praise that the common anime style of the 2010s gets. It seems this style is meant for quickly churning out anime for mass consumption more so than for thoughtfully creating style and tone. Smoothness and framerates can only take you so far if your picture is plain and your linework is bland. Maybe I'm just a snob.

The problem is in the current era of anime, nudity or sexual fanservice are considered almost obligatory in almost every show, compared to previous eras which had less but still prevalent. They are a must now as a common selling point. With time progression, realism in anime art styles evolve by compromising some features in body parts in favor of others, for example simplifying nose in favor of heavier stylized eyes. The moe factor that dominates contemporary anime shows influenced art style in anime heavily enough with more studios realizing fans prefer moe more and more. Also, because everything had to be drawn by hand in the past, there was an emphasis in details in drawing the characters and backgrounds. Not saying that newer anime don't have that much detail in them, it was just much more emphasized in the past. Birth of new genres also occurred a lot in the past that paved the path anime now is following. Anime then were made driven mainly because of passion with shows that bravely took risk in creativity experimentation, while in the current era it is hard to sell a show with just passion alone. You have to follow the proven trend and do what the fans want, consequently giving birth to bland and generic harem plus ecchi shows, which of course there are some exceptions. All in all, anime then don't really care about sexual themes, anime now consider it almost a must-have.

Fanservice was always there but the thing is it wasn't every show that had it. Now it's like in 60% of anime out every year. And I don't dislike me some fanservice and do enjoy it at times but even the 90's had less and BETTER fanservice then today

90s kid here. I connect most with the late 90s-early 00s era but I think the 70s style is my favorite. Very raw, wholesome, and authentic. I feel like too much technological availabilities takes away from the heart of a show. A lot of what I see in most 2010s and beyond anime feels like there's too much focus on glowly visuals

I feel like some of the reason i like older animes than the newer ones is that...I feel like anime now (for the most part) isnt viewed as art. You have animes like BanG Dream! where they flooded stores with merchandise even before it came out, and the anime didnt do well and now stores are begging people to buy it. If it was truly thought of as art they wouldnt focus on all that merchandise in the first place. Most animes now focus on income rather than furthering the anime world and artistic movements. Of course there expectations but most of it is overly sexual moe stuff :/

@DARK SIDE ................. Sigh Even though I'm not longer a fan, Disney has done some incredible animation even if they don't do the traditional animation anymore. We also had gems like Spiderman Into the Spiderverse which is leagues above a mass majority of Japanese animations. That movie set a new benchmark. Of course anime has some really great animations as well, but to act like Western animation is all the same is ignorant. Castlevania on Netflix also blows a large majority of anime out the water and then some. Watch the final fight in season 3 and say that again. It also has incredible choreography and a good story. Also dismissing stuff like World of Gumball (because it looks simple is ignorant.) That show used many different mediums and had a very unique animation style. You don't often get the creative freedom in the general run of the mill anime. See how easy I can generalize? Unlike you, I can appreciate both.
@Drstrange3000
@Drstrange3000 4 жыл бұрын
@DARK SIDE I am not talking about stuff you enjoy. That is subjective. To can Western cartoons in a box is ignorant. Even if you don't like World of Gumball it still does interesting things. You are the one trying to pass your opinion as facts to verify that Western cartoons are better. Unlike you, I know about both Western and anime in and out. Castlevania is an anime inspired Western cartoons that puts most anime to shame. Stuff like Dragon Prince is also great. And Spiderman into the Spiderverse has the best animation I have seen. It is unrivaled. All of these also have a lot of emotion and heart. They aren't just dumb cartoons. Also stiff like Bojack Horseman, while being a comedy anime, is extremely emotional and isn't just a cheap show for laughs. I haven't even gotten to non Western animation. China has come out with King's Avatar and Scissor Seven and the French are well know for their animations. Then there is great stop motion works and I can go on.
@Drstrange3000
@Drstrange3000 4 жыл бұрын
@DARK SIDE Yeah I agree. I wasn't trying to argue which one was better btw. I was trying to say that Western cartoons also can contain elements that you love from anime and that they can be just as emotional or complex. It is ok if you prefer anime.

Fine video but you should really double check dates in the video. Ashita no Joe came out in 1970 (1969 for the pilots) and you said 1971, Lupin the third It was 1971 (1969 for the pilot) and you have it 1973 despite saying it was the same year as Joe. Casshern started in 1973 not 1974 and Grendizer started 1975. You misspell "Urusei Yatsura" at 10:20. You say Angel's egg came out in 1984 but on screen it is correctly 1985. Macross Plus OVAs started in 1994 not 1995. The anime for Utena started in 1997 not 1996. Gurren Lagann was 2007 not 2008. I also think should have put an area of the video talking about cgi's rise of use in the late 90s and early 00s.

zeiitgeist But he mentioned Gurren Lagann. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a shallow show, but it's not up there as a super mature and deep anime. Sure, if you get past all the fanservice and typical shonen tropes, it is pretty amazing, but it's nonetheless very much like many other typical series that wouldn't usually be bunched up with ones such as Ghost In the Shell, Evangelion, etc. (And I'm not even hating, I love Gurren Lagann). Then again, it was probably the only mention of an anime of that sort, so you're sort of right (does Urusei Yatsura count?)

As someone that was born in the 90s, I disagree. In fact, 90s looks as same-facey as your generic anime nowadays, all time periods have their own trends. For example, people overrate 80s cartoons A LOT, and usually forget animation limitations like same character design shapes and biotypes that were specifically designed to facilitate the selling of toys. I hate the proud idea of "in my time it was better" specially since people that were children back in the day had time and patiance to watch ANYTHING that was on screen. Also, there're grown adults that don't have critical thinking and acknowledge of their own biases even now, imagine when they were children. All generations have their own lazyness and close-mindness to watch something new outside of what they grew used to, iirc even historical registers of ancient civilizations show that it was that common for a generation disregard the next one for their differences. Something worth considering is that there are more animes than ever nowadays, so naturally there are going to have more derivative stuff than before. Doesn't mean that there isn't quality there. Also, Mob Psycho, Masaki Yuasa works, etc? There are good looking stuff that have technicall qualities too.

Really interesting video. But I think you miss a huge aesthetic influence on anime and it's manga. Many of your examples are manga adaptations ; Astroboy, kimba, Dororo, Ashita no Joe, Lupin, urusei yatsura, Nausicaä, Akira, etc. and are really faithful and similar in style. So you can argue that manga is where most of the anime aesthetic came from and it most important influence (at least before the 90's).

So you won't really see cheering things in this only subdue monotone tripe that gets stripped for 'study' yet by-passes the filter of most people that never really acquired this 'skill' natural until someone points it out base on their oh so sophisticated understanding of this - its just goes on to be more pretentious than it needs to be...think shakespeare literature classes.

Star Remnant, Allow me to disagree, Dragon Ball is a shounen anime, which made a huge impact on shounen style anime of the future, aka - now. Animation style is very unique and iconic, did you notice that shounen anime have very memorable and iconic styles? You can easily remember characters, even if you never actually saw the series. For example: Naruto, Bleach, FMA(Brotherhood), One Piece, Death Note etc? and when you see slice of life or school themed anime - they all the same.

A very large percentage. Manga is much cheaper to produce, making it an ideal proving ground. If a story is succesful as a manga, there is a fair chance it can hold its own as an anime as well. That isn't to say it is always the case, but for the majority of serialized anime out there that is how they got their start. Some times it will go both ways even. Dragon Ball the manga came before the anime, but the latest incarnation Dragon Ball Super started life as an anime before being adapted into a manga afterwards. I'm actually far more a fan of manga than anime these days, as I am generally too busy to keep up with a lot of anime the way I did when I was younger. I can get through a whole volume of manga in about the same time it takes me to get through just an episode or two of anime. So I get to enjoy a lot more stories when I focus more on manga. As far as style influences, anime derived from manga tends to fall into two camps. Ones that are faithful to the source art style and ones that often cheap out a bit by making the art work a bit more simplified and/or more inline with the current style trends (making it a lot easier to bring in less skilled artists to do all the grunt work without much trouble). Some might even argue that second group can be split futher, as some take that route because the manga has a kinda crappy style, which can often happen with new series by younger less experienced artists or those who just have a really dated or ugly style that would be hard to market. An example of the last would be Parasyte, the manga has a very dated looking art style. It isn't bad, but it also isn't very appealing to a mainstream market either, so that show got a pretty major face lift to its style when it was adapted into an anime. The story wasn't changed much at all, and the anime was quite faithful through most of the series with only mild changes, mostly for pacing, but the art style of the anime was way better to me at least.

I love your channel, but this video was a bit too much on the descriptive side and not the analysis side. Maybe due to the format (time reasons), I don't know. But I would have loved to see was was the influence from the west on the Animation. The early work must have somehow been influenced by Disney despite Japan still being secluded. Later in the 70 it seem influenced by the European artists such as moebius or Mezière. I'm wondering if these took insipiration in The rise of more realistic Japanese anim or the other way around. Same for the digital era. The simplification of style seem to be affective the whole cartoon industry and it's now rare to have something with a production value standing out. Is it because of the cost, is the anime genre out of fashion and thus big production take less risks. Idk but i have loads of question. Maybe that can be a topic for another video :) Picked up some nice "towatch" anime though!
