Mehrangarh Fort covers a total area of 1,200 acres (i.e., 486 hectares) in Jodhpur City of Indian State of Rajasthan. The complex is situated on a hilltop at about 122 metres above the ground level, and was built in the year 1459 by Rathore Rajput ruler Rao Jodha, although most of the existing structure belongs from the 17th century. The imprints of the cannonballs impact which were fired by attacking armies of Jaipur’s Jaswant Singh can still be seen on the Dedh Kangra Pol. If you move left from the fort, you will find the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, who is a soldier who fell on the spot in order to defend Mehrangarh.
There are total 7 gates in the fort, which include Jai Pol (meaning 'victory gate'), which was built by Maharaja Man Singh to selebrate his victories over the Jaipur and Bikaner armies in the year 1808. The Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory gate'), was made to celebrate victory of Maharaja Ajit Singh over the Mughals. Some of the popular festivals that take place at Mehrangarh include the World Sacred Spirit Festival as well as the Rajasthan International Folk Festival. Rao Jodha, who was known to be the chief of the Rathore clan, is credited as the founder of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India. He founded Jodhpur in the year 1459 as the capital of Marwar (Mandore was the earlier capital). One year after he got the throne, Jodha planned to move his capital to a safer location and then he found Jodhpur. With the Rao Nara’s help, the foundation of the fort was planned on 12 May 1459 by Rao Jodha on a rocky hill located 9 km to the south of earlier capital of Marwar i.e., Mandore.
This hilltop was called Bhakurcheeria, which means “the mountain of birds”. As per the legend, for building the fort Rao Jodha had to displace the sole human occupant of this hill, who was a hermit known as Cheeria Nathji, meaning lord of birds. Cheeria Nathji was a man who had local population as his followers so he was quite influential in this region. When he was requested to move he refused straightaway. This happened a number of times. After that Rao Jodha took extreme measures and took help from a more powerful saint, who was well known female warrior sage of Charan community Shri Karni Mata of Deshnok.
On request of Rao Jodha, Karni Mata came and asked Cheeria Nathji to leave the place immediately. Looking at a superior power he left quietly but he cursed Rao Jodha with words "Jodha! May your fort suffer a scarcity of water forever!".
To make sure that the new site of the Fort proved propitious; Rao Jodha buried a man of the Meghwal community called "Raja Ram Meghwal", who voluntarily offered his services, alive within the foundations of the Fort as this practice was considered auspicious in those times. "Raja Ram Meghwal" was promised by the king that in return his complete family would be looked after by the Royal Family. His family was given a piece of land and to this day his descendants live in Raj Bag area near Soor Sagar.
